Buchholz

Rubby De La Rosa

Workman

Webster

Ranaudo

Taking what someone just posted that we're left with as a starting point. Replace one of Buch or Workman with Owens. This can't be the rotation we're gonna rock out with from Opening Day, right?

Top pitching FAs are Scherzer and Shields. Both are >30 so can we assume the Sox aren't offering more than 4 years? No way they get either.

I hope that is not our rotation. We have to get one of the top FA pitchers.

Is Dempster sill under contract for 2015? I know he took this season off, but didn't know if he opted out of his entire contract or not.

I still have hope for the trade-and-sign. Because without the trade and sign, this team is 5-10 years away from meaningful games.

Buchholtz, two of those young arms, and two FA (Hopefully one of them is Lester). If the Sox have more then two young arms in April for their starting staff then the 2015 Sox will not in the playoff picture.

Sorry Ted, we need TWO pitchers. What we have right now is garbage. You know Webster is a penguin in the garden, Workman a advertisement for failure, and Buchholz a total disaster. I don't know about Kelly except that he should be better than t hose three stooges I just mentioned. Maybe we can trade for Hamels. The Phillies are hurting worse than us and they did nothing today at all. Amaro is on very thin ice over there because he has done an even crappier job this year than Cherington has. Perhaps we can make a big trade for Cole Hamels, then sign a free agent if Lucchintsyino will get Prune Face to open his damn wallet and let the moths come out. Today was a total disaster in my opinion and the only real hope is that tomorrow Anthony Renaudo goes out and throws a gem against the Yanks and g ives us some hope for the future. Since it will be mine and Linda's 44th Wedding Anniversary I would really welcome a in tomorrow.

Sorry, thought he was at AAA already.

I think he's still in AA. Might be going up to AAA soon, but I honestly see him as being a september callup next season most likely.

I agree. Two pitchers are needed. I don't see us getting more than one of the big free agent pitchers.

Have a Happy Anniversary. Don't watch the Sox if you don't want to ruin your day.

Thank you Ted. I might peek at the score on my phone......I can dream, can't I?

When asked if ready to lead the pitching staff, Buchholz was noncommittal, talked health: “I feel good where I'm at. I feel healthy”

I can't wait to see him go.

Buchholz is an interesting waiver wire candidate. Someone always needs pitching after the trade deadline has passed.

He isn't close to be interesting. He's a frustrating starter since 2008, when he fail and get his ass handed to him. He still making these annoying brush under the rug comments.

The worse part of free agency is that Buchholz is now "leading" our pitching staff. What in the hell is the thinking there? One big signing in the offseason is not going to do it. Two might not either. If two or more of these prospects dont take off we're in deep kimchi. If Buchholz doesnt improve...wow.

Also, if we went this far, how come we didnt deal Uehara? Hes definitely only for the here and now, much more than Miller.

Getting two FA pitchers is a tall order and I would be surprised if we could pull it off. One of the possible trade targets for the offseason has disappeared. Cliff Lee reinjured his elbow. With his health in question, the Phillies will be less likely to move Cole Hamels.

Sign Lester, Sign Shields. Those two things will likely occur, IMO.

The other thing is that you just don't know who is going to be available on the trade market. Could the Sox send over a bus of prospects for Chris Sale? Who knows. The Sox certainly have the kids to get it done. If you go with Owens, Swihart, Bradley Jr, and 1 more for Sale, maybe they'll consider it. That's a big haul, but Sale is under control for 3 more years at cheap, cheap dollars (6mm, 9mm, 12mm next 3 years).

You go into 2015 with Lester - Sale - Shields - Kelley - RDLR? It's certainly feasible. Nobody thought Doug Fister was going to get traded last offseason. There's always a few names that go that shocks everyone.

Unless Automatic Out Jr. does a big turnaround to end the season, he has completely ruined his trade value.

I see Shields as a huge longshot. Someone will give him 4-5 years for his 33-38 years. I don't see the Red Sox doing that. I hold out hope for a Lester resign, but the next guy in the rotation will definitely be a trade. The Red Sox may have the deepest minor league pitching depth available right now. If the Red Sox packaged Rodriguez and Escobar right now, most of us wouldn't even blink, but that's still a pair of top 60 BA pitching prospects from 2014.

I am looking at Matt Latos and Johnny Cueto -- both of those guys are free agents in 2016, and the Reds can't afford to keep both of them. Matt Latos is very young -- the first extension year starts at his age 28. Cueto might cost more, but getting an ace extended started at 29 could be very nice as well.

I read the Reds were dangling Latos - so that is a real possibility. I think bringing back Lester is less than 50%, but a legitimate possibility still. Jorge De La Rosa is a solid idea (though I'd prefer him as a #3 option here) also. Between that and the higher ceiling guys in their org (De La Rosa, Owens, Webster), the chance to shore up the pitching is there. There is some considerable upside here for 2015, so I applaud and understand the Sox' desire to push there - just not sure these were the best moves to further that goal.

Not a big James Shields fan. 'Big Game' James is 2-4 in the postseason with an ERA a tick under 5.00. I could see - Buchy, RDLR/Workman/Renaudo (pick 2), Kelly, FA - not a crazy strong starting staff, but one with potential, especially if the offense is improved. Press seems to be high on Kelly's stuff, and he's only 26. I don't see them re-signing Lester, but if we have to give someone 5 years/$100m+, I'd rather they do it with him than anyone else. If you added Lester to the names above, it could be a really good staff.

Woahhhh, the 2016 free agent class looks insane for pitching . Some will sign long term contracts, but most of them are on teams that won't be able to afford them. There might be a number of quality trade targets available after this season, especially the Reds who will have three 2016 free agents.

(feel free to correct me if anything in this list is incorrect)

David Price -- Tigers

Jordan Zimmerman -- Nationals.

Jeff Samardzija -- Athletics

John Lackey -- Cardinals

Matt Latos -- Reds

Johnny Cueto -- Reds

Mike Leake -- Reds

Doug Fister - Nationals

Gallardo -- Brewers

Iwakuma -- Mariners

Kiris Medlen -- Braves

Lohse -- Brewers

Wei-Yen Chen -- Orioles

Get two established-talent free agent pitchers and make sure Webster isn't in the rotation. I think we can make the rotation look like:

Some expensive pitcher

Buccholz

Some reasonably priced good pitcher

Kelly

Workman

That's pretty great.

Any rotation with Buccholz as the no. 2 is destined to crash and burn.

get lester back. Sign Shields as well.

Buchholz is a clown. He has lost velocity as well.He use to throw 94 to even 95.This guy has alot of things that irk me.He is fragile.

To be fair to Buch, he has been forced into this position of leading the rotation, and we all know he's not a leader type or cut out for it. We shouldn't get pissed that he won't step up, because he's just not that kind of guy. And really, it hardly matters much for the rest of the season.

Sorry, am I missing something? How is 2/5 being Buch and Workman "pretty great?" They are awful. Kelly has taken a big step back this year.
