Napoli might be joining too. He hasn't hit anything since his finger got bent sideway. Now he has some hamstring issue as well. He plays hard everytime. it was brave he even return to the lineup 24hour after his finger almost severed.

Napoli has the flu ( or had it? ).

Time for everyone else to suck it up ( sorry for the unfortunate choice of words ).

These are major league players. Time to earn their salaries.

Nava was definitely one of my favorite players the first half of last year at least. He was an on-base machine for a pretty long stretch. He had a lot to do with our first half success.

Victorino is always banged up. He never seems fully healthy. He has the body of a player much older than his true age. He is critical to this team's success.

We got a hell of a lot out of him last season Ted....he hit close to 300, hit 17 homers, won a Gold Glove and stole some bases while playing a great RF----and his granny in Game Six of the ALCS was the biggest thrill I ever got in all my years of watching a game in person. He earned his salary and made his signing worthwhile. Fact, he was starting to break down in his last year at Philly in 2012 and looked spent when he was traded to the Dodgers. We need a long term solution in RF, that a certainty. The only hope is he mends fully this year and comes back stronger for his third and final year with the Red Sox next season.........can you believe just how s***** we look? I've thrown in the towel and think we need to start the rebuilding process.

I think last year was the best you are going to see from Victorino. This is what happens to players that speed is what makes them productive players. The 39 million invested in him did bring a title. I like Victorino, but I think he is done.

I don't see the connection either.

Although it should be obvious to any casual observer that it is difficult to run with strained hamstrings.

Victorino was 2 for 4 for the PawSox tonight. Hopefully, he is back with the big club over the weekend.

He also struck out flailing. The two hits never made it out of the infield. He is not exactly spanking the ball.

He did appear to run well so that is an improvement, at least.

Getting on base half the time is good enough for me even if they are HBPs.

I agree to a large degree.

However, I sense from what Victorino and the Sox are saying that he will be back with the big boys very soon. What happens if he is rushed back without getting his bat in order and he ends up being another Drew?

I don't see him making much of an impact anytime soon. In this case, I'd just as soon start Holt in RF and see Betts sprinkled into the lineup most of the time.

And if Betts is not going to start most of the coming games I would just as soon that he be returned to Pawtucket to refine his skills until the inevitable call-up later in the season.

I'd like to see Betts stick after Victorino returns. He adds a spark and he has the element of speed too. It may be time for Gomes to go.

Just want to acknowledge that I was incorrect in predicting that Victorino would not be contributing when he returned.

The Sox are being very cautious by holding him out in some turf games. When he is in he appears to be stroking the ball and running well.

So much for my hunches!

it was a pretty reasonable hunch in light of how long it took Drew to find some timing at the plate when he came back. Drew's progress was very slow. While I didn't expect Victorino's progress to be as glacial as Drew's, I didn't expect Drew to come out of the box smokin hot.

We have Victorino for another season and hopefully he can stay healthy, because he is a key to the team. Since there will be a lot of work for the FO to do just to be competitive, they need to acquire an OFer for the longer term. Even if Betts and Bradley hold down two of the OFer positions, we will need a big stick out there.

You and I have been spoiled over the years by the Sox usually having at least one "big stick" in the outfield. You are correct. The Sox DO NEED TO ACQUIRE a big stick. An outfielder ( preferably RH hitting ) would be nice! Currently, the Sox have no such prospect in the system. Alex Hassan is hitting very well in Pawtucket. But even those who participate in the seemingly on going jizzfest over the Sox prospects have to concede that a guy like Hassan is not what is needed.

I have no idea what players are available now that can be had. I only hope that the Sox don't take the Willy Mo route again!

Speaking of power, Ortiz won't be around ( or at least in a productive mode ) for more than the next year or so. The Sox power will drop off significantly when he is done. The problem is much worse than it may appear to be at first glance.

There seems to be the assumption that the Sox will be the successful suitor for Stanton at some point. I refuse to put all my eggs in that basket. The Yankees certainly ( as well as others ) will chime in on this.

The Sox don't ever seem to play small ball so we will see ( most likely ) another year at least of poor run production in 2015. That is, of course, unless the FO pulls one out of the hat and lands a thumper soon.

Excellent point. Ben is going to have to do more than walk and chew gum at the same time.

He's not an OF, and hindsight is 20/20, but how nice would it be to have Jose Abreu thru 2019 for $7-$12 million per year. I think the front office felt obligated to sign Napoli since they cancelled his original contract. Even worse, Napoli making $16 million this year, Abreu and Nelson Cruz combined making $15 million. Could have took the $10 million wasted on Drew, given Cruz an extra million, and Abreu $9 million more overall, still saved money, not had Drew killing the team for 6 weeks, and possibly Xander is still a productive SS instead of one of the worst 3B ever. That's probably the difference in last place and first place. So they're not that far off, just can't miss out on the potential bargains.

They made a huge mistake in not going hard after Abreu.

I heard that there was sealed bidding on Jose Abreu and that the Sox under bid by only a total of $5. Mil.

No use crying over spilled milk, I guess.

First base was one of the areas where they did well last year. Napoli has a pretty solid slash line, very good OBP and has been solid defensively. He also took less money to stay in Boston.

Abreu has turned out to be a very good player, but when you can get an .850 OPS and reasonable contract from a guy you know can perform under the pressure in this park, sometimes it is safer to take the sure thing.

I think the Sox missed Victorino big time. Besides what he does on the field when he is healthy, he is great in the clubhouse (The anti-AJ). Lets hope he stays healthy for the rest of his contract.
