Yeah, the Red Sox are playing with house money this year. That means they can take chances with prospects and allow their young players to develop on the job.

The Yankees, on the other hand, are the anti-Red Sox this year. They don't make the playoffs, it's Siberia, baby.

No. When you charge the prices the Sox charge its public, there is no house money. The title buys some currency - but not a position where they are not trying to put the best product on the field to win. The fans deserve that. If they want young players to develop on the job, it's because they deserve that consideration. If the Red Sox miss the playoffs, the fans will (and should) be disappointed.

The Nation should expect their team to contend, young players or not, and when there is a chance to make a deadline deal - to go ahead and do so. (not be stupid of course, but not hoard prospect inventory either)

And we'll know how shrewd Scotty has been when his client signs.

It appears that if in fact the Sox have made him an offer it's for a low AAV...if it's true they want him to be a super utility guy they may have only offered $6-8 million a year. Who knows, really...

That Drew has not signed "yet" is not indicative of Boras' work certainly. Letting guys hang until a market gap shows up has long been a Boras staple. There is a lot of media posturing here, and owners telling the Gammons of the world that they have all sorts of contingency options. But usually, you wait and something will pop up, especially at a premium position.

Siberia and a suicide watch. Seeing them miss the playoffs again would like hitting a mini-lottery.

Not quite, sk7326. All they have to do is stay in the hunt.

Red Sox fans are not like Yankee fans. It's not the end of the world when their team loses. Not anymore.

3 championships is enough for a lifetime in Boston for many fans.

In NY, the expectations are much higher. The fans there know the Yankees outspend everybody else and enjoy favored status in the media. They expect a championship every year. At one time, they got it.

@nickcafardo: The Red Sox were one if the teams who watched Ryan Madson's workout in Phoenix Friday.

Please, Ben..... DO NOT INVITE HIM TO ST OR SIGN HIM!

Nothing against him, but we don't need another RHP in the bullpen who can "close" and hasn't pitched in the MLB since having TJS.

If he was lefty, maybe it would work.

I don't know why a couple of our colleagues here think giving Madson a good look is harmful. First of all the chances of signing him are average since a lot of teams will be looking at him too, but from where I sit you can never have too much depth and to me that is an oxy moron. You need all the arms you can muster because pitchers get injured and they get injured often. Deep staffs suddenly find themselves on the short end when they need a couple of pitchers most. Let's see if we could sign the guy. A deep and effective bullpen helped us a lot last season and something tells me we will need a solid one again. Besides, aren't we looking at Hanrahan too? He was injured even more recently than Madson. Let's not get caught short.

Madson got $6 million in 2012 from the Reds without throwing a pitch for them.

He got $3.25 million in 2013 from the Angels without throwing a pitch for them.

I don't have a good punch line for this joke but I know there must be one.

Considering the results, it would have been better if Hanrahan didn't throw a pitch for the Sox last year.

Nope. Not a punchline, just the truth. Negative WAR for $7M doesn't sound good to me. Maybe it does for you?

Fortunately that's the great part of adding multiple players with top-talent potential. Sometimes one ends up with negative WAR, and the other ends up having the lowest WHIP in history.

The results were the Red Sox won the World Series, even with Hanrahan. There's no way the results could have been better. Sounds like you tried to land a punch line, and failed miserably in the process.

So Mr Soapbox, you're saying Hanrahan provided a good return then?

I'm not in the business of trying to amuse other people.

Wow, another fail by LVP78. If you don't know what I was trying to say, then you are both unamusing and unintelligent, but we already kind of knew that.

They won the WS, but not with Hanrahan. If you think that we wouldn't have won it without Hanrahan's minuscule production, then you should reconsider.

The 14-year-old runs to MVP's defense, and also completely fails to understand the point. Not surprised to see you two as allies here.

I understood what you're saying. I also understood that you were just trying to pick a fight for no good reason. Again, I'm not here to amuse some drug addict who spends his time looking down on everyone else.

The only person who looks down at anyone is you, seeing as your posts are littered with one-lined cheap shots. I thought it was time that someone called you out. Your post was factually wrong, so I wondered if it was a poor attempt at a joke.

How do you figure drug addict? Is telling people to stop taking them a characteristic of one? Also, isn't calling someone else a drug addict a characteristic of someone who looks down at other people? Again, another fail by the LVP.

There you go Bellhorn, there's your punch line, courtesy of everyone's pal Palodios. Service with a smile:)

Haha Fred -- I am just saying that depth is important EVERYWHERE on your team, not just pitching. :D

Well hell Pal, old Bellhorn was screaming for a punch line so I gave him yours to just quiet the guy down. As for the depth, you've read my posts on the subject so you know there is no argument from me on that score. In fact, if Madson looks good I think we'd be wise to cast our bid for the guy. As we saw last year, two of our "key" relievers went to seed, Hanrahan and Bailey. No, you cannot have too much depth anywhere. Glad you "might" have liked my sense of humor; next thing you know someone will accuse me of having a personality and being a Pollyanna.

@nickcafardo: The Red Sox have decided Xander Bogaerts will workout strictly at SS. At least for time being. They don't want to overload working at 3b
