Iggy is perfectly situated in Detroit--with a hitting team and a non-caustic Detroit media. He needs about 3 years to develop into a .250 hitter--like so many of those good field/no-hit SSs. Some of them, like Ozzie and Aparicio, get to the HOF. Others make all-star teams just on their defense, which some teams value highly.

I agree, he fits perfectly in Detroit. They had a bad defensive team and Iggy at SS will go a long way in improving that. Their lineup allows them to have the light hitting SS. Even though they have some problems at the back end of their bullpen I think they are still the team to beat in the AL. Meanwhile, the Sox need more offense at SS thus Bogaerts is the future.

Ozzie Smith had a few seasons where he was above average with the bat, plus he got on base at a very respectable clip. If Iglesias just develops into a .250 hitter, then he's more like a Rey Ordonez.

Ozzie made himself into a solid offensive player - like Iglesias, could barely break a pane of glass - but he had a good approach at the plate and ended up being able to put up .350+ OBPs during his best years. That plus his glove made him a solid 5 win sort of guy. Iglesias' effectiveness offensively is not in that solar system yet -and there is not much in his history to indicate he can become a high OBP sort of guy, even if got himself up to .250.

Yeah, if he "developed" into a .250 hitter what would his slash line look like? .250/.300/.300? He'd have to be putting up +30 UZR numbers to justify putting him in the lineup.

From the Trade Deadline Predictions thread:

Honest Predictions:

1. The Sox trade for Jake Peavy, giving up Ranaudo, Brentz, and Mookie Betts (edited).

2. The Sox call up Rubby De La Rosa and put him in the bullpen.

3. Bogaerts gets called up on August 20th because Iglesias hits .176/.227/.252 from 7/26 - 8/14, continuing his downward spiral. Iglesias becomes the super utility guy.

4. The final series at Baltimore will decide both the fate of the Red Sox (in the hunt for the AL East champion), the Orioles (in the hunt for the 2nd WC slot), and the Rays (battling the Sox for the AL East crown). 2011 will NOT repeat itself.

Off by a day, and completely wrong about Iglesias. But, the end result is the same.

I am absolutely pumped for this.

Give yourself some credit. Iglesias has been about that bad for Detroit.

My best guess is that Middlebrooks will get some time at first base this road trip, with Napoli's foot being jacked up. This is the best Middlebrooks has looked at the plate since 2012.

I think Bogaerts will get 2-3 starts at SS per week vs LHP, and 2-3 at 3B/week with Middlebrooks taking a day here and there and then playing some 1B while Napoli is out.

With Drew batting a merger .154 for August this makes a lot of sense. The Dodgers series might be an ugly one for the Sox.

It might be. But the Dodgers have to cool off at some point. They aren't the greatest team of all time, and we've seen lesser teams beat the Red Sox 2 of 3, so it's entirely possible the Sox win that series.

Here are the pitching match ups for the Dodgers series:

G1: Lackey vs. Nolasco

G2: Dempster vs. Ryu

G3: Lester vs. Capuano

I am fine with those match ups. I think we have advantages in two of them. But who knows....

Offense will be scarce - two big time pitchers parks and teams (at least in LA) to match. But the defense/pitching should also have a chance to perform well. Boegarts made sense this time - Sox need a little more versatility in the NL parks, and he gives them more options. Can he make them keep him here through August? That's up to him.

Well those are the projected matchups.

The real matchups will be Lackey vs Nolasco, Lester vs Ryu, and Peavy vs Capuano. And I like our chances in all 3 of those. I think this will be a very productive road trip for the Sox. I think they'll win 5/6.

Drew is batting 317 in August FYI

Would be nice. At this point, going .500 on the trip would be more likely.

Glad Xander was brought up. Hope Buch can come back in 2 weeks and move Dempster out of the rotation.

Can't wait to see Bogaerts. Perfect time to call him up. Lets see if he can do to us what Puig is doing for LA.

How much will he play though? 2 out of 6 games?

True. Now that Middlebrooks is hot, Drew can take a few days off.

A couple of flies in the ointment on that:

(1) Drew, since July 31, is actually hitting quite well: .319/.395/.464/.859, 2 hr, 11 rbi. Yes, his last 6 games have been a struggle, but not his last 18.

(2) Drew's season splits vs. RHP are pretty solid: .272/.367/.461/.827. And the 3 SP for San Fran will all be righties. So sitting him here seems to make the least tactical sense.

That said, I still want to see Bogaerts....

After a long night followed by a west coast trip, I guarantee you that both Middlebrooks and Drew will get a day off against the Giants, obviously on alternating days. I would guess Drew gets tonight off, Middlebrooks gets tomorrow, and Bogaerts sits on Wednesday.

Also, the Sox face both Capuano and Ryu against the Dodgers, so that's 4 out of the first 6 games that Bogaerts should be playing.

We are in the land of double switches and hitting for pitchers ... even if Boegarts does not get starts, he will play a lot - possibly finishing a majority of the games. He might see a day off, but I doubt it ...
