Two solid starts in a row for Aceves in Boston--when they needed it. That gets him a first class ticket back to Pawtucket? Doubt it this time.

We're probably in a bullpen juggle since our doubleheader vs. LAA and the 14 inning series so you never know, but it won't be based on results. We could need someone to cover Buchholz potential start, but we could take advantage of that and have another bullpen arm for the Orioles series by using someone else. Good thing I don't have to make the call.

I spent my night in a sports bar in Boston with 50 televisions, and 0 of them showing the Red Sox... huddled over an iphone hoping that the Sox sneak this one out.

Very happy with the results. Aceves gave up 1 run to the next-best offense in the majors, Nava hit the game-winner and the bullpen was shut-down. The Rays are now 5 games back on the division, and the Yanks look like they might be 3 down in about an hour. Oh, and the Red Sox are firmly in 1st in the AL.

Loving the Sox this season.

The only thing I caught on the Nava K was Nava starring out at Archer like he wanted to club him over the head. Now I guess I know why. I could not see Archer's "smooch" with his almost bicep.

I think Bailey is doing just fine, but I certainly think the Sox should kick the tires on Brian Wilson and see if he could be a late inning arm for them that wouldn't cost prospects

Solid win. We're playing the toughest part of our schedule this year and we have an opportunity to increase our lead in the division.

June was circled on the schedule as the month from hell and we've taken 4 straight series 2/3.

This year is so frickin' awesome so far.

Thanks for posting that video. What a dweeb. Nava had him crying into his mitt when he took him deep...didn't show him up...just ran around the bases....while Archer had his first drama moment. Then Archer pulls that s***....Mr 900 pitches in four innings....f*** him....suck on your notch in the L column kid.

I missed a lot of this game, but I saw Nava's bomb and the 9th inning. I was watching the Bruins... Damn

Thank goodness we hung on for the victory so I wouldn't feel compelled to bring up the fact that it was a tremendous mistake for the FO to let Papelpon (AKA the greatest closer in Red Sox history) walk.;)

Bailey is making $4 million, and has been worth 0.5 WAR. Papelbon is making $13 million and has been worth 0.4 WAR.

This is why Ben is the GM.

Best post you've made so far.

Baseball-Ref has Papelbon at 1.0 and Bailey at 0.7, which makes more sense to me based on their numbers.

Based on what numbers, ERA? Papelbon has a .193 BABIP. As much as has been made of Bailey's health, he's pitched two innings less than Papelbon this year.

Even if we use B-R, that would put Papelbon at $13 million a win and Bailey at $5.7 million a win.

Huh? BABIP is factored into WAR, seriously?

Papelbon's WHIP and K/BB are also much better than Bailey's.

I'll give you K/BB, but his low WHIP is also strongly BABIP fueled. Especially with Papelbon currently sporting the lowest K rate of his career.

This brings me to the question: Would you trade Bailey for Papelbon straight up right now, tripling the cost of the Closer spot for .3 WAR?

No, I don't think I would right now. For me, thoughts of Papelbon only arise if and when the back end of our pen looks scary. So far this year it's been very good.

That's because you're a reasonable poster Bellhorn. Had you said "But he on Rivera highway!" i may have had to smack you.

For the "greatest closer in Red Sox history", Papelbon had a pretty big hand in the Red Sox not having won a postseason series since 2008. He blew game 3 against the Angels in 2009 and game 162 against the O's in 2011. I'd much rather pay $4 million for the crapshoot that is closers.

Papelbon is much better than Bailey, but we have Bailey, not Papelbon so people need to get over it.

If everyone just took their own advice, the world would be a better place.
