Turns out the Cards were right to "disrespect" Pujols. They could put virtually everyone on their team at 1B right now and he'd outproduce Pujols

I think the idea of trading for Cliff Lee is a far stretch. But if Lee is available i would hope the Sox would definitely go after him. I honestly think a top 100 pitching prospect plus one position player would land Lee as a contract dump for the Phillys.

I was in the thinking that Stephen Drew would be on the block come the deadline to make room for Iggy, but now since they DNA Pedro it looks more that he will stay even if he and Iggy swap letting Iggy be the everyday SS and Drew being the utility guy.

I like the current pieces on the team now as far as position players. I think Gomes Carp and Victorino and Ells all stay and maybe one small trade just for depth using someone from the farm to use to make the trade.

A trade for a SP is a big need to add beside Buch and Lester and bullpen guy who could potentially close. If the SP gets done i think this team will start to increase their lead on the other teams in the AL East and have a legitimate chance for a Championship.

Plus, they got Michael Wacha as draft pick compensation. I love the Cardinals, they're such a well run organization.

I really don't like the Cardinals or their fans at all. It is kind of a Midwest superiority, but it is a very similar superiority to the Yankee superiority. I hate the Yankees, but the Cardinals and their fans are a very close second.

With Alex Rodriguez disabled, Yadier Molina is my least favorite active player.

Plus, let me add that during the 2004 World Series, Cardinal fans were so insistent that their fans were more loyal and better informed than Red Sox fans. There were several that claimed the Red Sox stole Red Sox Nation from the Cardinals Nation. I really hate the Cardinals and their fans.

You would know better than the rest of us since you live in predominantly Cardinal country, and I know exactly where you're coming from. I live in the Los Angeles area and I feel the same way about the Dodgers as you do about the Cardinals. The difference is the Cardinal fans know baseball and are informed but these LA fans are some of the dumbest fans I ever heard of. All you have to do to get a sellout is offer a giveaway prize and they'll bust down the gates to get in for their freebee. But a few of them are starting to boo so I guess that some kind of improvement for them after 55 years of being almost mute. They still don't know s*** about the game, though.

The Padres have acquired Pedro Ciriaco from the Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later, tweets Peter Gammons. The 27-year-old infielder was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Monday.

As much as I'd love for it to be Jedd Gyorko, it will be the Padres 20th best prospect who not even Padreds fans have heard of.

20th best? lol That would be a lot in my opinion. It's going to be some AA-AAA utility player with options.

It depends on how SD's system compares to ours.

But if their system is comparable to ours, I'd love a 20th best prospect in exchange for Pedro Ciriaco. I doubt we'd even get a prospect, probably money and an aging AAAA veteran type player.

Posted

Granted the Sox system is stocked, but 20th prospect is a high upside guy like Montas/Margot/Jacobs.

Ciriaco sucks, is a single hitter at best with poor plate discipline and mediocre fielding abilities. Nothing significant is coming back and that's fine. Addition by subtraction

Even if they had absolutely no one to play 1b it would still have been right to "disrespect" Pujols. No one on that side of 30 years is worth that much money. It's stupid. Pujols is falling apart physically and he is swinging at waay more stuff and missing than he ever used too.

Cano is probably going to get $210,000,000+ from the Yankees. SO STUPID.

Invest in young, homegrown talent! STL knows how to do it.

Would a combination of Stephen Drew, Ryan Lavarnway and a prospect get us anything in return? I wouldnt mind seeing a bullpen arm or two in return.

Drew might fetch a prospect back from the Pirates or Cardinals. He's still owed some money, and he's not playing well this year, so I don't think the return would be pretty high.

Not playing well? His bat has not come around, but if you watch he has hit a ton of hard hi balls this year that get caught, so when you look at that and his track record as track record there is no reason for a gm not to think he can really heat up with the bat.

And that's half of his game. His defense / fielding has been great. I really don't see how anyone can watch Drew play defense this year then say he has not played well. Dude has been really fun to watch in the field.

So there's a lot of speculation going around that the sox may trade to get Papelbon back from the Phillies... They'd probably have to give up a decent prospect as well as take on most of his salary, even with how shaky the bullpen has been at times, I'm not 100% sure it'd be worth it.. I guess it depends on who we give up

People seem to generally have an embedded dislike for Stephen because of his brother. He could be OPS'ing .900 and some would still say he's not "playing very well".

I don't think this is necessarily true. Drew is hitting .215 with a .679 OPS right now.

Yeah he missed ST, and had a really nice streak of 18 games where he hit .317 with a .969 OPS.

But from May 16 - June 16, he hit .186/.273/.330, and he's struck out 32 times in 97 AB (33% of his AB). When you've already got Salty, Napoli, and Middlebrooks who K at a high rate, adding Drew to that list only exacerbates the problem.

If Drew was hitting well, people would be ok with him. But he really struggled out of the gate, which is fine, he had no ST, and he went on a little tear there. But now, for the past month, he's been atrocious at the plate.

The hate for Drew is more of a product of his terrible performance recently than his bloodline.

So what you're saying is that posts on this site literally attacking him for being "a pussy like his brother" after he got concussed, and the reactionary posts on GTs saying he sucks and he's a waste of money while he was in the middle of his hot streak don't denote irrational hatred towards him? Color me skeptical.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that that crap is coming out because he's playing poorly. If he was hitting well, nobody would mention it. But once he starts to suck, everything comes out.

People don't hate him because he's JD's brother. They hate him because he's hitting like garbage right now, and they're getting on to him about everything because of it.

Plus, my biggest point is that the people who react as your saying are in the minority. The whole '10% of the population making 90% of the comments' thing.

The reason why both LA teams are throwing money around FAs like drunken sailors is because they have money to burn from the Fox sports local TV contract. The Angels blew everybody out of the water with Pujols--even knowing his best years might be behind him. Same deal with Hamilton. Neither team is concerned about money, but their performances so far indicates they haven't been wise in spending it.

Money can buy you love, but it doesn't always buy you wins.

Jim Johnson,Mariano Rivera, Joe Nathan, Addison Reed, Grant Balfour, Glen Perkins, Tom Wilhelmsen, Ernesto Frieri, and Greg Holland are the top closers in the AL so far. There are some names I do not recognize there. That tells me that the Sox probably can find a closer in their ranks.

I think they can find a closer too. I think Bailey may just need a lil friendly competition. Im not saying he will out right lose the job if they bring someone in but i think it will make him understand that if he dont preform that other options will be used.

The Blown save lastnite is just to be expected from a hard thrower. It happens thats all you can say. He isnt going to be perfect all year and we all would be dreaming if we thought he would be no closer is.
