That was painful to watch.

This is such an incredibly interesting season. You could argue (for fun) that game 1 today saw us fall victim to the worst aspects of our offseason signings. Gomes has clearly been the signing that we would most question....Nancy Drew was second to Gomes even before today......Dempster is neither God nor the Devil but is pitching just good enough to lose. For a side dish, Vic who has been fantastic is injured forcing Nava to RF and (Heaven Help us) Gomes to LF.

Bring on Webster....honestly baseball really does not get any better than what we have been treated to even if the Sox had not been winning the bulk of these games.

It's pretty rough. I think I'm pretty much done with my extended look at Drew 2: Electric Boogaloo. I know, I know, Papi started slow a couple of years and he's back to being the beast he was, but Drew doesn't exactly have Papi's resum?.

WMD needs to get his head in the game. Everyone who watches him knows what his problem is. He and the coaches need to fix it.

Carp and Ciriaco ought to be playing tonight.

EDIT: Clearly, as UN says the Hawaiian should be playing tonight, if possible. If not, Carp. Or do we really, really not want to see Carp in the OF?

Salty AB really the ended of the game. 2-0 he hacks weakly at a pitch. Christ. Now Dempster has to explain to reporters why the Red Sox lost the game.

"Because my catcher didn't understand that the opposing pitcher couldn't find the strike zone with a topographic map, and so hit a weak groundout instead of at least making the guy throw one strike." Eh... might make his catcher unhappy. But it would be fun to watch!

I don't know what you mean by that. I don't think it makes sense. It's not his fault the Sox don't hit when he pitches. And with an ERA in the 3.3 range, he's definitely pitching well enough to win some games.

We should see if the Royals want to trade catchers. I'm talking straight up. Our guy is taller so they're clearly getting the better end of the deal.

I just can't blame this one on Dempster.

Guys just couldn't hit anything, and even the result ended up being identical to the one when Dempster lost to Pettitte.

Dempster got out-pitched by Irvin Santana. Santana is neither God nor the Devil either but he did out-pitch Dempster. That is really the definition of pitching "good enough to lose". You pitch pretty good but you get out-pitched by the other guy.

Santana's was a dominent performance this afternoon. Once he found the bottom of strike zone, the Sox really could not touch him. I don't expect to see any dominant performances out of Dempster this season. That at least IMO is not what he at this point in his career. So he is going to get out-pitched on occasion. I expect him to go out there and do his steady Eddy thing. Sometimes that is going to be good enough and sometimes not.

The same can be said for all pitchers. You can go out there and throw a complete game and allow 1 unearned run and still lose to a guy who threw a shut-out. That's baseball.
