I was listening to some of the KC-Phillie game today. Mike Schmidt was in the booth with Georg Brett. Their stories were worth the price of admission. The were two great and tough ballplayers. They were telling stories about taking out second baseman with hard slides and the badge of honor of having that reputation. They questioned whether that mentality exists today. Brett told a story about Dickie Noles throwing behind his head in the World Series (I think). He wasn't pissed about being thrown at. He was pissed that he was unable to get on base to get the opportunity to break a leg of one of the middle IFs. That's playing the game the right way. Let the players police themselves.

This is why you can't privately discipline your umpires. The fans need to know what's going to happen when a call like that gets kicked. That was an obvious blown call. At least the guy who robbed Armando Galarraga was man enough to admit it. I doubt we see a peep out of this creep.

You have to look at the players who are doing it though. Most of the damage has been done by Cano, Youk, and Hafner, and we all know that Cano is the only one of the group who will make it out of April healthy.

Valid point. Still, it seems that no matter how much it might make sense for them to suck, they always find a way to win 90 games and win the division or wild card. Like in 2011 when Garcia and Colon remembered how to pitch.
