ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes reported that multiple sources confirmed the Red Sox and Pirates have discussed Hanrahan, a righthander who had a 2.72 ERA with 36 saves in 40 opportunities last season in Pittsburgh.

Hanrahan, 31, makes sense for the Red Sox because questions linger over closer Andrew Bailey, who missed most of last season with a thumb injury and had a 7.04 ERA in 19 appearances when he returned.

Hanrahan made $4.1 million in 2012 and is eligible for salary arbitration in 2013 and eligible for free agency on 2014. He was a National League All-Star the past two seasons.

How would Hanrahan do in Boston? Sometimes small market NL stats don't fly in Boston. We went though that last year with Melancon. I think Hanrahan has better stuff, but its still a unknown what he would be able to do under the bright lights of Boston.

I personally like Hanrahan's stuff a whole lot. It is a question mark how he would do in Boston, but I see the interest they have as well.

I know Hanrahan, and he's no Melancon. For sure. They should grab this guy when they can. Morales or Aceves would be good. He's one of the top 5 closers in the NL.

Anything to improve our overall pitching situation is something that I would back. I assume the Red Sox wouldn't make moves that would give us a surplus in the bullpen dept. while taking away from the rotation. Who knows.

I would not trade Doubrant... Iggy is a definite maybe but i think the FO wants to put him in the minors for a lil while and see how he hits and its kinda his last shot to prove if he can be the SS of the future. Xander is clipping right on his heels. Also if Iggy was traded id rather see him in a package for a starting pitcher rather than a closer

Plus i would rather see the sox give Bailey a chance to see what hes got plus bring in Brain Wilson would would be cheaper than Hanrahan... if Bailey cant cut it have a closer by committee during the first half and then when Wilson is ready let him take over the nineth

Bailey will probably give us 40+ innings and a DL stint.

Plus many, many others

Uh....not really. Considering he is a FA in 2014, walked 5.4/9 in 2012, and won't be offered a qualifying offer and thus won't net a pick after next year, Iglesias is about all they'd get.

Trading Iglesias for a top notch closer sounds like a steal. I wonder if the Red Sox would view it that way, though. They undervalue closers, and are still intrigued about another year in AAA for Iggy. I say pull the trigger. Let him become a star somewhere else. :)

Well with Drew up this year, Ciriaco for depth, and Bogaerts looking more and more like he's going to stick at SS (Keith Law went from 0% chance before this season to 50/50 in a recent chat), if they can get Hanrahan, by all means, do it. And if he works, extend him.

The Sox are going to have a disgusting good bullpen with Uehara, Hanrahan, Bailey, Tazawa, Breslow, Miller, and Bard/Aceves. Perhaps the best pen in the league.

Ha. James thinks this is a good team. So does Larry Bowa. Bowa says if their core players return to form--especially the pitching--they could be in contention. Their closer situation

could be lock down if they got Hanrahan. The GM should be jumping on this like that wild dog in Toronto. But Ben is not a jumper.

Aw c'mon, Sport, Cherington has signed 6 free agents in a relatively short period and is now in discussions on Hanrahan. You may not like the moves but I think he's at least putting to rest the inertia stuff.

To be fair, if Lester goes back to an 18 win, 3.50 era pitcher and Buch goes back to a 15-17 win, 3.70 era pitcher, which is what 'bouncing back' would be to me, then this team is an absolute contender.

Toss in a stupid good bullpen, assuming they add Hanrahan, very good SP depth via prospects, not retreads in AAA (Webster, Workman, De La Rosa), and you've got a contender.

Regardless of what the Sox did this offseason, this team goes no where without Lester and Buch being the pitchers they can be. They don't need career years. Just a solid year, back of the baseball card.

We would only get one year of control for Hanrahan. I just don't like the idea of giving up Iglesias or Doubront for one year of a closer. I know a lot of people want to give up Iglesias, especially in a situation for a proven closer. I am all for giving up Iglesias in the right situation, but not for one year for a closer. Iglesias is only 22. He is under team control until 2018. I want to at least give Iglesias one more full year in AAA, then if he cannot find his bat, then we can trade him. By that time he will be 23 and I would personally be ready to give up on him. He is still young and can still improve. After next year, we would be in a better position to know how far Xander is away and if he is going to be able to play SS. If Iglesias struggles next year in AAA and Xander is going to be a SS in the bigs and is not far off, then I think we should pull the trigger on Iglesias.

I am more intrigued by Brian Wilson than Hanrahan. Wilson will not cost a draft pick and will not cost nearly as much as Soriano money wise. We won't have to give up any players or prospects like we would for Hanrahan. I know Wilson is a question mark, but I think he is worth a shot if he can get back to his 2008-2011 numbers. Wilson is only 30 and has publicly stated his interest in Boston.

BOSTON --The Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan, according to multiple sources, although one official cautioned that there was "still work to be done.''

Edes says it's "close". Glad to add another BP arm, worried about whats going back.

Personally I can't see how Doubront would be going back. That'd be 1 step forward 2 steps back. What do the Pirates desperately need?

Iggy and Salty. That's a deal with some fair upside on inexpensive players for the Bucs, and we get a good power arm back. Not a bad deal.
