The next time someone bumps a thread more than a week old for the sole purpose of annoying another poster, I am going to be...upset.

For the record, (honestly not trying to be a smart ass here) I think that it's valuable to bring up these threads after time because it may deter people from making over-reactionary and borderline stupid threads in the first place.

Granted I don't make threads, but I'd be a lot less likely to if it has a chance of getting bumped up later and put in my face if I'm wrong. Everyone is wrong around here every once in a while, but a lot of people don't see it or won't admit it. There needs to be reprehensibility for people that make stupid threads.

Plus it encourages discussion on the value/merit of each player and in this case, the positive value for Ben Cherington.

There is really no reason to bump these threads though, there are plenty of currently active discussions in which these things can be discussed.

I disagree. The old threads provide the cold hard evidence in case one person denies ever posting what they are being ripped on for posting. It's a lot harder to weasel your way out of your words when you're wrong if the very thread is dug up. I definitely condone in it.

8 years on Talksox has convinced me that this is a lost cause. All that bumping threads to say "I told you so" or "You were wrong" does is devolve into arguments and insults. Just look at the Papelbon thread I had to close the other day.

Except this happens even when no one was denying what they said. It's just done when a player does well to say "nyah nyah" to whomever opposed the signing in the first place. "Haha, you were wrong six months ago" is not a legitimate reason to bump a thread. If someone denies posting something in the past, a link to the thread works just as well without bringing it to the front page to clutter up yet another baseball discussion with pointless insults.

I think the Papelbon battle here has been a classic, and I was on the wrong side of it for the most part. Thankfully Paps blew the whole thing into irrelevance with his obvious decline this year.

In the future, I'll just create a new thread if there isn't one on the front page. Sorry.

I personally think we should have an "I was wrong" thread. Mods can move old threads into there, but it can mostly be a confessions/exposing thread. If nothing else it'll combine a lot of the smaller threads and simplify the board appearance a little.

That thread would be 200 pages long with people complaining about personal attacks. Not sure YOTN would go for that.

Koji Uehara is a really good signing by Cherington. His first of the off-season!

1-year $4.25M is good value for a pitcher with a good track record (when healthy).

Hey! Hey! At least I gave some love to our current, and effective, closer Koji back in December! This thread wasn't a total train wreck!

Gomes has played about as well as I expected him to. I mean his slash line is .230/.329/.407, he hasn't been DFA'd yet, I was wrong about him being cut by August, and he has made some stellar defensive plays this week, but besides that he's still a $10 million cheerleader.

Note: Gomes isn't even hitting lefties this year. He has a .743 OPS vs LHP.

I posted this yesterday. Some fun stats on Gomes this year...

RISP .333/.458/.452/.910

RISP w/2 Outs .389/.560/.667/ 1.227

Bases Loaded -- .667/.400/1.667/2.067

Not bad for a glorified cheerleader if you ask me.

ML Carr wishes he had that production when waving his towel on the sideline.

Gomes is fun as hell to watch and seems like a real interesting guy off the field.

Well of course he got off to a dismal start. OPS by month:

April .670

May .612

June .826

July .885

It seems like one of the keys to the Red Sox success this year is that different guys have been really hot and coming through with big hits at different times. In the early going it was Napoli and Nava. Lately it's been Gomes and Drew.

I believe Gomes and Dempster were brought in as much for their baseball skills as their positive clubhouse presences. I believe it was viewed as necessary after Beckett, Gonzalez, Valentine, et al soured the atmosphere last year.

There's no question Gomes was brought in for his clubhouse presence. He's drawn a lot of comparisons to Millar, at least personality-wise, Millar was actually an okay hitter too.

Last year's team had way too much negativity surrounding it. The expectations were sky high, Bobby Valentine was, and is, just a blowhard idiot (I'm still not sure how he get the job) which didn't help things at all.

This year nobody is on a contract that is painfully bad (good riddance Carl Crawford). I was horribly wrong about John Lackey's ability to recover, and he has been great this year. Even if he sucked he would have been the team's only terrible contract. Victorino & Dempster are overpaid but nobody cares since the team is winning. The addition of Peavy means Dempster can be put on a short short leash. In fact, I don't really see how Dempster isn't the odd man out when Buchholz returns. Dempster should be out of the rotation now. He's made one quality start since June. I'll take Workman please! But if the #5 starter is my biggest complaint I'm a pretty happy guy.

Are we really bitching about Jonny Gomes?

I think hes been pretty solid, and he looks like a huge clubhouse guy, something that was HUGELY missed the last 3 years.

Gomes has been a great addition IMO......and I dont care if he doesn't get a single hit the rest of the season.
