Their moves right now look more like positioning to sell the team than emphasis on youth. They just spent a ton of money on a bunch of old guys in decline. And they have prospects that should be ready well within 3 years--possibly even this year. Why wait?

Maybe that's harsh, but the Rays options to fill their holes are much better than the Red Sox.

That's a perception. They are loaded with prospects right now thanks to the Dodger deal.

I wouldn't say he's a fringe prospect, but he's not a guaranteed star in the making either. His upside might be a starting OF on decent club when he's up and adjusted to MLB. His power potential is really high, but his other offensive tools might need some help.

Brentz's stock has gone up over the last year. A signing of Swisher now would probably block him. Swisher is going to want more then the 3 years at 13 million. I think we may see him (Brentz) some time next season.

Definitely could. Also, giving him some playing time could boost his trade value a bit if they get a suitable replacement or find that they have too many OFs.

Ive heard a lot of good things about Brentz. But is he projected to be an average defender and i havent heard much about is power numbers is he gonna be a power hitter or no.

Has power, K's a fair amount. Has an absolute howitzer for an arm. Range is ok.

I don't see Swisher as a must. I see him as a nice addition that would provide us with a lot of flexibility. Sources have said Swisher does not really consider Boston as a top choice. At this point, I would be surprised to see us get Swisher. I am still not counting out Swisher or Ross.

I look for Swisher to sign with Cleveland.

That is possible. The market for Swisher is not that big for Swisher. The Giants don't seem to be interested anymore. It is probably just down to the Red Sox, Guardians, Phillies, Mariners, Rangers, and possibly the Orioles. The Guardians are being aggressive in their pursuit of Swisher. Whether the Napoli deal falls through or not, I could still see the Sox making a push to sign him. Cleveland seems like they really want him, so that would not surprise me.

Should be a nice move for the Guardians. Reports are saying it wasn't his first choice and you can't really blame him, but it does seem like the Guardians are at least trying. It'll be interesting to see him in a different uniform, got so used to him being a Yankee. Always liked him as a player though.

That's a ridiculous amount for Swisher. If there's any Boston fan complaining that Cherington didn't match or beat it, they're insane.

I'm not sure how you figure. It seems about right to me. If he had gotten a Werth-type contract, that would be insane.

I respectfully disagree.

The Red Sox gave a declining Shane Victorino a 3-year $39 million contract (AAV $13M).

The Guardians gave Nick Swisher, a player still producing like he is in his prime years, a 4-year $56 million contract (AAV $14M), and they forfeit a draft pick (1st round?) to the Yankees.

Because the Red Sox have a protected first round pick they only would have had to part with their second round pick for Swisher. Which sounds like a pretty good deal.

I'll take Swisher at 4-56 over Victorino at 3-39 any day of the week. At present Swisher is twice the hitter that Victorino is.

Ben Cherington must have been asleep at the switch, like he has been all off-season. It makes me think that ownership is dictating what he can and can't do because the team he has built just doesn't have the foundations of a playoff team. There is more going on in Boston than meets the eye.

That's a pretty reasonable contract. I though he was looking at 4yrs $60 mil easy. His production mirrors jayson Werth's phillies numbers and he got $70 mil less in guarantees

Funny you mention that. I read somewhere that defense and playoff numbers are the reason Swisher got so much less money even though he and Werth are so similar. Supply and demand was also mentioned, given how deep the market for of was this year.

No argument that Swisher is a much better hitter than Victorino. But you need guys who can catch the ball too. You have to consider the total player. Victorino will be able to move to centre to replace Ellsbury if we move him.

Victorino also benefits from his speed and a much better postseason resume.

last 4 years:

Swisher : 15 WAR

Victorino : 16.7 WAR

their both the same age so I'd take the shorter contract

From what I've heard, the option vests pretty easily, so it is closer to a 5/70 contract. That's nearly double what Victorino makes, and Victorino gives the team a significant amount of flexibility in the outfield.
