@PeteAbe: Mike Carp is not the ideal guy by any means. But could be a cheap bench pickup for the #RedSox now that Morse is with Seattle

Uh, who?

Sounds kinda fishy....;)

Seriously, I wondered the same thing.

The Sox need a left handed bat that can play left field and first base to complement Gomes and Napoli, but this guy is absolutely not the guy. He is a rare lefty bat who can't hit righties.

They already have LH bats in Salty (1b), Kalish and Nava (OF). If the guy isn't a step up from those three, why even bring them in? Not sure this team needs more bench players.

By cheap I hope he means next to free. Looking at his minor league numbers he never really hit for any average there either. Looks like he has a little pop in his bat and that's about it. Plus, as last years numbers suggest he probably isn't the right fit for this Red Sox team.

While it doesn't seem likely that Napoli will be catching games now that this hip thing has been dragged out so long, does anyone think we'll still see Salty traded? (Before the bashing Salty thing starts up again and to clarify) I'd like to see Lavs get some regular playing time this year, but with Ross and Salty it looks like he'll end up only coming up at the end of the season again unless something weird happens.

With Napoli reportedly getting a one year deal, I think it is unlikely that salty will be traded prior to the start of the season. Although I think it is certainly highly possible that he could be trade bait before the trade deadline depending how the season unfolds and Lavarnway develops.

Well s***. Napoli for one year, at $5 million dollars. Ben, your succulent breasts have done it again.

This is a huge, all upside move. They have the flexibility to get another very good arm, or bat with the savings if they want.

This deal may not free up a nickel. If Naps' hip doesn't cave in he'll get his $13 million, according to the tweeters.

If he's healthy, who cares? The Red Sox will probably free up money midseason with an Ellsbury trade anyway, or possibly Lackey/Salty trades. Keeping Napoli at that price adds significant flexibility, both positional and financially.

Ut-ohh....watch out here MVP...thems fightin' words for some folks....

I have said the same more directly. May I commend you on your diplomacy. The moderators will be pleased with the occasional respite from their toiling.

Crazy day.

Red Sox get Napoli for 5 million.

Red Sox pay Salty 4.5 million in arbitration. What a rip off for a guy who had a .270 OBP and can't play defense.

They are paying by the foot and he is tall.

I can just see them fighting now over Nap's first injury. "That's not my hip, that's my thigh!"

Either way, they'll still be in a pickle over who's at first.

Regarding Salty, the system is built such that any mediocre player can be a millionaire after a few years if he can continue to make the team in any capacity. The system is frightfully inflationary.

It's a good deal if his hip holds out and he can do some catching. If his hip hinders him and he has to be DL'd, yes they would have limited their financial exposure, but they will not have a major league first baseman or a middle of the order hitter. If his hip holds up, we will be paying the market rate for him.

It will be interesting to see if Cherries/Farrell will talk about how Napoli will be used, I.e. whether they plan to catch him part time.

I would be surprised if he caught a single game for the Red Sox in the first half of 2013. They have three other catching options that they like quite a bit, even if one is a tall turd. Napoli's bat is too valuable to risk his health.

Maybe that's even in the contract terms? Catching can't be a good thing for someone with a hip problem.

Catching is tough enough. A bad hip would make things much worse.

Pirates Designate Zach Stewart For Assignment

By Zach Links [January 17 at 4:24pm CST]

The Pirates have designated Zach Stewart for assignment, according to MLB.com's official transactions page. *The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Jeff Karstens, whom they signed earlier this week.

Stewart was acquired from the Red Sox for a player to be named later in late November. *In 103 career major league innings at the MLB level, Stewart has a 6.82 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9. *He's no stranger to the pages of MLBTR, having been traded four times since being drafted by the Reds in 2008.

Maybe we can get him back:lol: Afterall, some had him projecting as a good bottom of the rotation starter.

I think signing Salty was smart because his power hitting talent may still be on the upswing (no pun intended) and if he starts out good like he did last year, he may turn out to be great trade bait, and we wont have to pay that 4.5.

Someone here, maybe it was you Palodios, showed that our pitching staff had an ERA much higher when Satalamacchia caught and that a few of our pitchers did not like pitching to him. Look, Lavarnway is going to be 25 and he doesn't need to be sent down again for more seasoning. Give the guy the job and let him run with it. I would be willing to wager that by the trading deadline he would have a better OBP than Salty, our team's ERA would be better with him catching and we can add another young player to our lineup.

The one thing about Napoli catching that intrigues me is that John Lackey loved throwing to him when he played for the Angels. Psychological? Well we know how the mind can influence a baseball player's talent and progress. Just thinking out loud.

But by the trading deadline our team ERA probably will be at the bottom of the league if he does most of the catching.

Napoli should see absolutely no time at C with a hip like his apparently is.

Salty can still be dealt if they want. Or Lavs can start in AAA.

Actually it was shown that Lester and Buch had higher era's last year with Salty compared to Shop. it was also shown some pitchers era, like Becketts was pretty much the same, and it was shown some pitchers had a lower era pitching to Salty. It should also be noted Lesters era throwing with to Salty in 2011 was something like 3.7

I could be wrong but I think it made more sense to get Salty into a contract than not.....he is still a "catcher"....sort of.....and could still be somebody that could be part of a package that got the Sox something decent back. Don't get me wrong...I don't see Salty as the centerpiece of any trade but I think he can be a useful trade piece none the less. However if Salty catches something like 90-100 Sox games in 2013, it will likely be indicative that they are going nowhere.

Salty does provide a good deal of comic relief though. Actual catchers must die laughing about every half minute or so.
