Just throwing it out to chew on. When VMart comes back next season, there is no position for him with Tigers unless he rotates between DH and 1B with Fielder. The Tigers may just look to dump his salary. He could fit nicely at 1B for us.

Not a bad thought.

This is an intriguing alternative to signing a FA like Napoli who could platoon at 1B and C. Obviously we know that Victor can succeed in Boston- what we don't know is how healthy he will be. During his time here, he had some injury issues then. If he comes back, he will presumably see much more time at 1b. I believe I remember when he left that he didn't want to become a full time 1B / DH and catch part time. Maybe after his injury this year he just wants to go somewhere and play a less demanding position. He seemed to really enjoy his time here and would be able to play a leadership role as well.

If its a salary dump, presumably the prospect cost would not be as high as other alternatives like Smoak, Olt, or Moore.

Worth looking into.

I think Martinez is the DH for the Tigers in 2013, but I like the idea.

Right, they could have VMart as primary DH and Young back to the OF if that's how they want to go.

VMart will make their offense just that much more dangerous next yr. They underachieved big time in 2012 and if it wasnt for the White Sox completely collapsing, they'd have missed the party. I see them exploding on the scene next yr and probably winning close to 100 games

I know there are some people against signing Delmon Young this offseason, but do you think he would be a fit in the OF for the Red Sox since he is a FA?

No. Sorry, Delmon Young is talented, but he's never put it together and I wouldn't pay him FA money to see if he might.

He's a useful option as a 4th OF if he can play multiple positions. Besides that I'd rather take my chances with Kalish. The only guy i could see Young pushing off our projected roster is Nava, and that mostly because of his superior athleticism and potential -- performance wise Young vs Nava is a trade-off

Delmon Young has had a negative WAR for 2 consecutive seasons. He is a terrible outfielder who K's way too much, doesnt walk and cannot hit for a high average. All you can really count on with him is diabetes and around 20 HRs

I like Napoli on a 2 yr deal ... Crushing hr's into the sky over the Monster... Thinking about 30 easy!! Reminds me of a Lowell if they can get him

No place to put this comment really but watching Scutaro in the NLCS is truly galling....another lousy decision by the Sox FO.

Heck I remember at the time that most of us simply wondered why.....he seemed like a value, not a salary dump candidate. Then when we saw what we ended up with at SS we really wondered why, especially since the resources referred to that could be spend "more efficiently" I think was the term used, were never spent by the Sox.

Anyway...Scutero had a great September 2011 while the rest of the Sox were pure s***. So I wish him well and wish we still had him.

We gave him away like we are the KC Royals.

I'm officially on record saying the Sox should go after Shohei Otani really hard. The amount of money these international FAs have needed to sign is relatively small compared to actual FAs. He's a HS kid an dhasn't proven himself in any significant way yet, making his price smaller. If they were willing to give Jose Iglesias a 6m bonus, shouldn't they be willing to offer more than that for a pitcher with this kid's upside?

This is one of the few areas where their financial advantage can still truly play out. Go get him Ben.

You forgot there is a 2.9M spending cap on IFA.

I wish I could say I forgot. I actually didn't know. Looks like 3m cap on all IFA per year, with "heavy penalties" for teams that go over.

So, essentially they will have to hope that he's more interested in coming to Boston than LA or Texas.

Not necessarily, if the Sox value him more, they'll be willing to blow more of their cap on him.

So, if Cherrington and the Intl scouts think that he's the stud of the year, they can go drop 2.8mm on him or even 3.1 or 3.2 and eat a bit of the penalty.

I wonder if they can get creative and say "We'll give you a 2.5mm base contract for 4 years, and then you will receive $1mm in each season you play 10 games or more."

Posted
Eating a bit of the penalty isnt really feasible. Going past 5% of the cap loses you a 1st rounder. Going past 10% loses you 2 first rounders. Also, the INTL signees contracts count in total towards the cap. So, if they sign a 4 yr $10 mil deal, then $10 mil hits the cap this yr.

In addition to what Jacko said, my initial point was actually that there's cap to how much teams can pay him. Therefore, at some point, theoretically it won't be about the money, it will be about where he wants to play ASSUMING LAD and maybe TEX are willing to blow their entire budget on him. That may or may not be the case.

Dice-k's time here prepared the organization for Japanese talent, and it was a big part of the reason the Red Sox signed several Japanese players including Tazawa. Having a MLB major league manager with Japanese language skills is one of the few things that I can appreciate about Farrell.

Dice K was a waste of money. These things you mention are pure nonsense.

You know what is nonsense? The notion that having a manager who speaks the same language as you is not an extremely important thing for a player.

The managers actually speak very little to the players. It's better to have coaches that can speak the same language as the players.
