As usual isn't the truth somewhere in the middle?

On the one hand, a view that suggests that this incident goes to the top of the charts along with the things that are plaguing this team right now is probably a bit extreme. Thinking of it as nothing more than a media creation is probably just as extreme the other way. In fact if I had to lean it from the middle, I would probably lean it towards a serious incident and not toward a media creation.

In the first place, while we are talking about Beckett being stupid enough not to realize that he could do himself even more damage playing golf with his particular injury I think it more interesting that Beckett is arrogant enough not to try to understand the risks before grabbing the golf bag. It would not have taken much of an effort on his part to have found out what was what.

In the second place, this entire organization is in a state of flux, in a state of disarray and suffering from severe mismanagement and lack of leadership at all levels. Can we all agree on that?

The team has young starting pitchers almost all trying to make a transition of some sort....Lester, trying to be a #1 (failing by the way), Buch trying to come back from injury, Doubront trying to get through a first season as a big league starter, Bard trying to convert from reliever to starter. It appears that Buch is "comfortable" with Beckett. They have apparently known each other for a bit. However what do you do if you are a young pitcher. Do you go to Beckett for help? Do you avoid him like the plague? Will management think less of you if you are thought of as part of the Beckett clique?

Are we unwilling to acknowledge that there is likely yet another leadership void here that Beckett could fill if he were the type of person that would see that as part of his role, if he were up to the task?

I will grant you this...his attitude is typical for the "vets" on this team. Agons when asked the other day about his start to the year answered with "by the end of the year MY NUMBERS WILL BE THERE."

My numbers....why am I not surprised that a Red Sox vet would talk about this season in terms of his numbers as far as having a successful vs unsuccessful season. How much better would it have been if AGons said "by the end of the year OUR RECORD WILL BE THERE. I don't eve care if AGons thought that the focus of the questioning was specific to him.....he would have turned a goodly number of detractors to fans with that one turn of phrase but it just not in him.

If AGons "prepares" a statement of some sort, sure he will come up with some canned phrases that suggest team but caught in a circumstance where his true or truer feelings are going to come out in a comment....there you have it "MY NUMBERS". It would not take much imagination to sum up this whole sorry assed version of a baseball team that way.

AGon talked about his numbers because people complaine about his lack of production this year. He said he'd rather go 0-8 and win than 3-5 and lose. He offered to pitch.

I think you're off point here.

I wish his numbers would be somewhere else-- another city and team. I don't want to hear it about this guy. Spare me the tale of his tape. Slow footed first basemen who hit 25 HRs a year are a dime a dozen, not worth $22 million/yr. Plus, we had to give up prospects to get him. What a steal!!

No one is talking any more about him leading the league in HRs or hitting 50, because of the Monster. No, we won't even see 30. I don't give a rats ass what his OPS is at the end if he ends up with only 25 dingers. When Ortiz was in his prime, he was putting that up by the All Star break. That kind of money should have been spent on a higher premium position than first base, and if I were going to spend that kind of money on a first baseman, I'd rather have paid it to Prince Fielder.

FTR, Beckett can reject a trade because he has 10/5 rights. So, no shipping him off to the Pirates for spite.

How is Beckett going out golfing two days before not being able to pitch a "media creation"?

To me, it's a "Beckett creation".

How is Beckett refusing to pitch in relief three days after playing 18 holes of golf a "media creation"?

This is Beckett being Beckett, no more no less....

Ship this fat slob outta here!

It's the accentuation that's a media creation.

Most of that is barely out of the ordinary.

When we're winning, he's out playing golf with sick kids on his off days, kissing babies, and volunteering 40 hours a week at the soup kitchen.

When we're losing, he's a cancer that punches babies and pays the homeless to fight to the death for gummy worms.

Beer, chicken, and golf is in damn near every clubhouse. The Boston media needed scapegoats, and they found them.

The Red Sox policy is not to have starters pitch in relief. That's one of their pitching problems. Too sharp a division.

Right now, the way they are pitching, they all belong in the bullpen--and Buchholz belongs in AAA.

Maybe Beckett was playing golf with Henry. :)

I have called out of work once' date=' to see my daughter be born. So, no, I have never called out of work to golf. And you will just give him a pass if he did just want to call out of work to golf? Are you f***ing kidding me? This has to be a joke? A pitcher who throws every 5 days wanted to hit the links rather than throw. You have outed yourself as the teams biggest homer[/quote']

I agree completely with you. I'm not even talking about September of last year with him. Trust me, I am a golfer and play and practice about 3-4 times a week. When you have an injury like that, golf is the last thing that you want to do. I am just not a big fan of the selfishness. Some people will try to make the comparison to skipping work, but imagine that you only have to do it once every five days. I mean how much of a selfish ******* can you be? Now I don't want the guys on this forum who like Beckett to start getting angry with me. I'm just saying I'm not a big fan of the arrogance and selfishness.

Like it or not' date=' we're stuck with Beckett.[/quote']

I don't think so. I think he's paving his way out of town like Nomar and Manny before him.

what i f***ing cannot believe is that why is the redsox attracted to guys who end up being cancers around the clubhouse. seriously. why isnt any other team having such an issue.. its humiliating to even follow a team that has a bunch of *******s who dont even try to play the game right.. and yet get paid millions of dollars.. 180million$ team in last place is pathetic.

Well there are a number of ways to try to achieve balance on a team. One way is to keep the number of long term, high money contracts on your team as low as possible and keep as many cost controlled players still playing for their first big long term contracts on your team as possible. That achieves a certain degree of balance that I think has become most critical in MLB because of the way the collective bargaining agreement is structured. In my view if your team is choke full of long term, heavy contract players, it might look good on paper, but good luck to you. That is what the Red Sox are and that is in large part I think, the answer to your question.

He's struggling so bad, maybe a couple of weeks in Pawtucket would be good for him.

It'll never happen, but I'd love it
