The Sox still have holes at shortstop, left field, and right field. They have downgraded at closer. They don’t have fourth and fifth starters. New York, Tampa, Texas, Anaheim, and Detroit all got better. The Sox are not better. Anybody else skeptical about the Local Nine? Who will be the first to note that the home opener is on Friday the 13th?

This paragraph is so typical of Shaughnessy's snide, irritating style. And the shot at Gonzalez was brutal. I've had enough of him, I really have. I certainly don't expect the writers to fawn all over the Sox and say how great they are. But Shaughnessy has been writing like a hack and being a pain in the ass long enough now.

Yeah, I read that crep. I agree with you. Wish he and his hack-ass would move on. We can only wish...

He's largely right factually in that first paragraph. People don't like to be confronted with negative truth. And he is a snide guy. But by all means let the factions rule and silence all of the dissenting voices. That's the American way.

You mentioned earlier that you don't like him either. What don't you like about him?

He can be snide and smug, and I always thought that the so-called "Curse of the Bambino" was opportunistic contrived drivel, but I wouldn't pull the book from the library shelves and burn them in a pile.

The whole "Curse of the Bambino" was such ********. It helped give him a name. Total hack/crap s***. I agree it shouldn't be pulled from library shelves or burned.

I get your point. We all do. Can you quit defending the guy? You enjoy arguing for the sake of arguing.

Go argue you with your wife and give us a break, please!

I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing. I made a comment that as bad as Shaughnessey is that the Boston Press has been much worse. Shaughnessy is the sole survivor. I also made the point that the Boston Press isn't as bad because the Red Sox have much more control over the media today than they used to have. I don't think that is necessarily a good thing. I also don't advocate someone losing their job, because i don't like them. What part of that is arguing for the sake of arguing? What part of that is defending Shaughnessey?

Shaughnessey isn't going to or shouldn't lose his job because most people don't like him. Just wish he'd move on. I'm tired of his schtick.

I am not getting into this with you. You will continue to argue and get in the last word. I'm happy for you. You are always right about everything. Have at it. Enjoy. Sleep well.

Have a heart. These media folks are just trying to learn a living. Don't take them too seriously. That was Ted Williams' problem. Half the time, those guys are just talking off the top of their heads. In the case of the Globe, the head is usually the Sports Editor, Joe Sullivan. :)

I think the Sox are as good as any of those other teams. The others have just as many issues. When was the last time you saw anybody in the media take the Yankees apart? You take them apart, they look just as ugly as anyone else.

Hes 100% right in the first paragraph. I have said much of the same s*** all offseason.

The difference between the way I express it, and the way he expresses it is that I cant stand to see the Red Sox fail. It pisses me off that they have those holes. It pisses me off that last season happened. CHB is miserable and he gets off by writing bad things about the Red Sox and picking on certain players in public media.

He needs the attention because nobody gave that lanky, hideous, red curly haired man the time of day growing up. He was picked on by all the jocks growing up and now he takes his revenge out on all of them in the papers.....

CHB sucks. He used to ride Jim Rice pretty hard. In fact' date=' I am pretty sure CHB pretty much single handily ruined Jim Rices reputation around these parts with the articles he used to write.[/quote']

Ahhh, CHB, one of the few good things Carl Everett said.

For every one of his CHB statements, he made statements about space travel and the moon.

It was like, one step forward, 168 steps back.

Rays aren't better. Moore is unproven. Luke Scott and Carlos Pena aren't huge upgrades.

Tigers aren't better. They're just replacing VMart with Fielder.

How would you suggest they fill the hole in LF? Eat CC's contract? Probably a better idea to sit and wait for him to have a career average year.

I find that paragragh by Shaughnessy so typical and irritating because it's so lazy. He's not really interested in discussing the possibilities of Crawford coming back, or the Ross and Sweeney platoon in right field, or the possibilities of Bard or Aceves filling one or both of the rotation slots.

For all you Shaughnessy fans, I sugggest the blog Dan Shaughnessy Watch. If you aren't already aware of the blog, it regularly slams his columns and statements.

One has to wonder though what suddenly motivated Shaughnessy's out of nowhere slam at A-Gon. That seems like he is trying to stir the pot just to stir the pot.

I think the stirring of the pot is exactly what his motivation is.

"Look at me, look at me, I'm stirring the pot!"

Shaughnessy in a nutshell.

You are right. He's just trying to get people to read his column. In the 60's and 70's, most of the print guys were like him. They would drop hints of clubhouse feuds etc. that had no basis in fact. It was real tabloid garbage. Today, they can't get away with that stuff, because one of the other media outlets would expose false stories like that.

As for AGon, IMO he turned off a lot of people with the comments about the collapse being God's plan. Blaming god is the ultimate cop out.

I guessing that stirring is DS's job......Peter A. seems to do the "news" stories for the Sox and Nick C. is less offensive, so DS's job is to be DS...and the GLOBE pays him for that. With all the people who hate him, he still goes on his merry way.

This opens up a whole other discussion, but I have to give A-Gon a pass on those comments if he is being truthful about his religious beliefs. We've heard athletes who give the credit to God when they succeed. Presumably A-Gon would do the same if the Sox win the World Series. If not, then we might have a problem.:)

Who knows why Shaughnessy has been taking shots at AGons.

These guys simply pick sides cause that is what works in the media these days. Don't think so....just listen to sports radio where most if the personalities are also columnists for one of the local papers. Whatever it takes to get somebody to read a column or listen to them is what you are going to get. One guy writes about one thing the other guy writes it from a different perspective.

Sports reporting is fine but sports journalism is just space filler....stuff to clog your free time with but not much more than that.

The blog noted above did refer to the early "man crush" DS had on AG....so it remains a mystery what caused that nasty ,albeit brief ,mention of AG.

The media is all about conflict: identify it, expand on it, create it--if you have to. They are in the entertainment business, and all the world is theater. Sports is no different from anything else. They are in business-trying to make a profit. It doesn't have a lot to do with reporting facts.

According to Mut & Merloni it is because A-Gon simply isn't as accessible to the press this year as he was last year. Plus I think A-Gon is probably upset that soem of his comments about God and the schedule were "misconstrued". So he figures he'll get less grief the less he says. He'll let his bat do the talking for him.

This is where the press has to leave things alone. If Adrian doesn't want to hob-nob with the press that is his perogotive and his privacy should be respected. He isn't getting paid to be a public relations font for the Boston Press. There are plenty others who love to deal with writers; they shouldn't be starved for copy.

As for Shaughnessy, he is a very strong Red Sox fan and has said so on many occasions, and I got that impression in talking to him in San Francisco two seasons ago. He is also a fan so I would guess he gets pissed off like the rest of us. BTW, that was the weekend I took in a game with Pumpsie when the Red Sox were in town. When are you and I ever going to touch base at a game?

Shank represents the epitomy of trolling. I've heard from several people who have met him similar opinions to that of Fred, as in he's actually nice in person, which leads me to believe that he's created that douche-nozzle persona to promote his articles, and he's succeeded.

My personal opinion of him, and I admit this means nothing, is that he tries too hard to be like the Boston media of old. I think once this achieved some notoriety for him, he decided that this was what he was going to be. The sports writer that fans love to hate. It keeps him on everyone's lips when talking about the Red Sox, and he rides it for all it's worth. Is he really like that personally and privately? I doubt it. It just gets him more publicity.
