Maybe. I posted earlier that salaries for the upcoming year' date=' and is close. I don't think its a given that we will go over the cap. If we do, and if its not for pitching, then the management is penny pinching and stupid.[/quote']

I think they're gambling on a free ride this year. New manager, 100th Anniversary, money coming off the books next year, a better FA crop next year, the extreme outside chance that everything clicks and they make a playoff run---combine all these factors and IMO they're just rolling the dice that they skate this year.

Why should I care what penalties those rich **********s have to pay for their greed.

But they are very philanthropic and they have a strong sense of noblese oblige. They are still **********s, but I felt compelled to note those other things. LOL!

LOL a free ride from Sox fans? They might still fill the park but it's pretty hard to get a free ride from the total fanbase and the media.

Yet you have posted many times that they should exceed their cap this year in order to get another SP so that we can compete for a ring. So are you one of those greedy **********s who expects a championship every year?

Why not admit that the is a year we aren't going to get one and step back and plan well for next year? To me thats a much sounder business plan.

This is closer to what my overall feeling is. Should the Sox spend their way out of the 2011 mess? Probably not, but paring payroll after a shitstain of a season comes across as cheap. If people tuned out in 2010 when the injury bug hit, just wait until a midyear swoon in 2012 ( if one happens). The sellout streak will look more ridiculous with 4,000 no shows.

What i don't understand is the mixed signals being sent.

On one hand, it seems apparent they're trying to shed payroll, on the other, Cherington says there's no "hard line" from ownership to stay under the cap. It makes no sense.

He's just saying that because he wants to avoid "bridge year" scandal part deux.

No I certainly don't expect a championship every year. I would be satisfied if they spend another 5-6 million to get another starter. It makes sense to me to increase the payroll from 180 million to 185 million when you so obviously need that other piece to have a shot at a payroll spot.

It is a curious situation. Again, I will state that the FO is content to create the perception that this organization is championship driven. When in fact, those rich boys just don't give a s***. They own a major league team to message their egos and make as much money as possible (if they can). Good for them. I guess?

Viva capitalism.

It's weird that this has resulted in 2 championships and the second most wins in all of baseball since they took over, huh? Strange coincidence. :dunno:

It is not a coincidence. I understand what they have done. I actually live here. I actually know some of these people. As a fan, I am gratified that the Sox have won. But. I am not naive. I understand what I see.

My take of it has been that the more they win , the more money they make. Championship=money=championship driven.

And I will certainly not argue your point.

MY POINT..... is that these boys (Henry, Werner, Luchino ) make the bulk of their money on a 162 game season. The fans are sucked in by the the idea that the Sox may actually win a title. Lots of money is generated. And that is cool. That is good marketing and sound business. I will not agree to disagree. We are saying the same thing here. Just in different words.

Fair enough. Thats certainly one option-to spend the money to compete this year for a ring. Its going to be tough. Lots of teams have greatly improved, and even with the addition of an Oswalt or Jackson we will find it hard to match up with the Angels/Tigers/Yankees/Rays etc. If we are really at 180 million I would prefer shedding more salary to get down to the cap then having lots of flexibility to go after a couple of primo SP next year. Thats another business plan option.

Sounds like Bill Clinton, who said that he smoked marijuana once, but didn't inhale.

Or Jerry Brown, who said he smoked marijuana once, but didn't Exhale.

I have a challenge for you-we need to come up with a good term to describe a team with a huge payroll that has only a very outside shot at contending to win it all this year, but should be in better position the next year. You've used rebuilding year but it doesn't seem to really fit. Theo infamously coined bridge year which was nothing but trouble.

So what is a good term to describe the 'mammoth payroll/but wait till next year' scenario?

Let me get this right: you are asking me to come up with a nickname for this team?

Now you know that i hardly ever use nicknames, but sure, I'll try.

How about calling this year "The Aegean Stable Year", the year we clean the stables up from all the s*** left over from our previous GM in anticipation of restocking it with thoroughbreds again next year? Or "Lucchino's Lament"-surely he is looking back at some of what was done last year with at least SOME regret or lament. I will give it some more thought if you don't like these nicknames.

Those are both pretty good, especially Aegean Stable Year.

This is sad but true. It is an absurd situation that they will be getting themselves into unless they get a starter, and someone on the Roster can play a competent SS everyday.
