The Sox have signed LITTLE Nicky Punt-0H, this man is a grinder! He needs to have his own thread, if this gets closed to hell with you and to hell with Coach Devine.

Let's just appreciate him.

I bet LITTLE Nicky Punt-0H will be a big factor with your team. Might even get 45 starts. Book it.

All during the playoffs and Series last year, I kept wondering how the Cards kept playing Punto over Theriot....the guy was weak at the plate and had little range in the field. I thought Theriot must've been hurt and they were stuck with this guy. I was pulling for the Cards and it was horrible to see that guy step up to the plate (though he did come up with a few worm killers thru the right side).

I hate the move....people are playing up his glove skills but I don't see any range. And he's mid-30s with a glass bat. There were dozens of better options for the utility infield role. I'd like to give the new m'gment the benefit of the doubt but, man, IMO lousy move.

He's generally known as a selfless, team-guy. For a million or two, on this ugly team, I think that's worth every penny. Even if he sits on the bench, having a guy who has been in the playoffs in recent years, and helps out team chemistry... priceless.

No questioning the guy's heart or his team mentality, I just don't like his baseball skills. Even as a late innings D guy, I don't think he adds much....just a rah-rah fuzzy feeling. Aviles proved himself as a nice infield utility guy and Inglesias has all the leather and the same bat as Punto....so why pay the guy 3.5 million over 2 years? That's money that could've been much better spent elsewhere.

I see him cut long before the contract ends....I hope I'm wrong and he brings a c'ship attitude and sharpens up our millionare airheads. I just doubt it, that's all.

We had Alex Cora for a few years. Do we really miss him?

What you saw over 8 or 9 games is not better than what a full year of scouting and statistics told the Red Sox about the guy. He's an above average SS, and excellent at 2B/3B.

As usual, black or white, no gray area, and a fundamental misunderstanding of how a roster is built.

What we miss lately is a solid supporting cast for the starting everyday 8. Our everyday 8 every year lately looks like it will crush the competition but as soon as they start going down or running out of gas we suddenly discover we have dog dodo behind them. I cannot definitively say how much of an answer Punto is but I think we constantly downplay how important the second line players are even given the fact that a few of our starters are either aging or are brittle or prone to fatigue or all of the above.

Every deal can't be for some multimillion $ all star.

He's a late inning defensive replacement who is being used as a pinch hitter/utility infielder. He should get less than 100ABs this season and effectively should just be a handcuff for Aviles should the sox have a lead. Once Iglesias takes over at SS, he is extraneous and will probably be cut

Why the f*** did they gave him a 2 year contract? SERIOUSLY? How did that happen?

After all the bungling our FO has done over the past 3-4 years you have to ask how that happened?

Yeah, they will undoubtedly look back and call this a lost season thanks to the $1.5m they are giving a guy who is happy to be a backup utility infielder who can play 3 IF positions.

Complaining about a total of 3m over two years for a guy like Punto seems like bottom of the barrel analysis. His signing is essentially a non-issue.

All the non-issues, e.g. Punto, Byrd, Nava, DMac and Bard on and on add up to being a last place team.

You, my friend, have exceedingly low expectations for the players allowed to play for the Boston Red Sox.

I look back and laugh at UN calling him an above average SS

I didn't consider the fact that signing with the Red Sox instantly gives you a -15 defensive rating. Or maybe age is catching up to him, because he was really f***ing good.
