Motte throws 97-100mph and has a sick breaking ball. How does he not have closer stuff? Boggs and Salas got them by' date=' but winning the WS requires you to have a good end guy. [b']And I am not sure Bard is that guy for you guys[/b]

What other option do we have? If we don't overspent the damn cap, I don't even see that we could set up a 2012 WS contender team. We have a lot of holes to cover and a ridiculous available budget plus some red flags in our current lineup.

Remember we need a #4 starter to slot in ahead of Aceves as well.

We need a #4 starter

We need a closer unless we move Bard to closer

We need either two new relievers or at least one reliever and one closer if we don't move Bard there

We need a RH, RF

We don't beed a DH as those duties will be handled by the squad in total with Lavarnway getting a oood bit of the work.

What about pitching depth?

The lineup is where you're going to have to deal with some changes. I think Lavarnway slots in as the primary DH and backup catcher, and Youk gets his fair share of time at DH as well. All that cap is going to get spent on pitching

Motte is nearly 30 years old and wasn't promoted to closer until the end of the year. There are lots of guys throwing nearly 100 mph who are not closers.

Boggs and Salas got them by' date=' but winning the WS requires you to have a good end guy. And I am not sure Bard is that guy for you guys[/quote']

Salas, their nearly season long closer, and Boggs have been middle relievers. How is Bard any less of a closer option than Motte...or any other hard thrower out of nowhere?

If you mean starters it looks to me like we will start the year with 5 starters and I cannot see how we can improve on that under the circumstances. If somebody goes down we will have to bring somebody in either off the farm or buy somebody. I do think they will replenish the pen out of a combination of guys from last year, guys brought up and guys they get elsewhere.

Rationalizing at its best. Bard is younger, has similar (probably better) stuff and better control than Motte. He may need some seasoning as a closer, but he should be even better than Motte.

They can sign two or three reclamation projects like Brandon Webb et al, and see if they catch lightning in a bottle.

I think the Phillies wanted to resign Madsen--a known quantity for them. But Madsen's agent was Boras, and that means the deal was too rich for the Phillies. So they decided to go with a higher profile closer for similar money. They just didn't want to pay Madsen Pap money. The question is whether they are rolling the dice with Pap. Will he revert to the pitcher of 2 years ago?

The Red Sox have a strong closer in waiting in Bard (forget about September--they all sucked, and Bard was overpitched). That probably was the plan all along. If they wanted Pap, he would have gotten an offer.

What I think they should do now is go after Nathan or Broxton. Cheaper guys who can close or setup, as backups for Jenks and Bard. Nathan could wind up to be a steal, with his strong 2nd half stats.

Bard isn't half the closer Papelbon was. There's a reason Bard never got much of a look in the ninth, even while Papelbon was struggling.

Well, then let's hope that our rotation stay healthy and do not even think to s*** the bed.

Bard never got a serious chance to close games. To compare them in that role now is comparing apples and oranges.

This organization is in a pathetic state these days.

Hey Ben, stop worrying about hiring the next puppet and fix the f***ing team.

People called me crazy for wanting to blow it up, because this team won 90 games and was the best team in baseball for a month stretch. Well, if Ortiz doesnt come back we can subtract 6 wins from their total last year. Right now they go 84-78.

Make a decision Ben. Either fix it, or rebuild....your move.

You people are f***ing idiots. Pay out the ass for a god damn closer while we have big rotation issues to shore up (among other things)? Why not just sell your car for gas money while you're at it.

The Red Sox made a tragic, tragic mistake with this one. So f***ing terrible. Papelbon is worth the money. He was also one of the only leaders the sox had left.

Yeah, look at all those top name starting pitchers weve signed thus far. Look at those rumors fly out there about possible FA targets. While other teams are signing our players away from us, were still looking for a god damn manager. Talk about having priorities mixxed up, a f***ing monkey could be a baseball manager, they only do what their told to do from upstairs anways....

It sucks that we cant "pay out the ass" for a closer because we are a poor team. We have to be careful with our money. If the redsox signed players to contracts like the one John Lackey got, or Carl Crawford got....they would be crippled!!!

Wait.....we are the idiots that gave those guys albatross contracts.....because we can afford it.

Dont make excuses for them. They could have paid the f***ing guy and went out there and got starting pitching. Its not like other teams are thinning the SP market and its not like weve been close to signing one.

I should mention that Papa agents told Cherington that they would not accept a duplicate offer from the Sox so the Sox could not have signed him for 4/50 even if they wanted to. Frankly they would have had to have been out of their minds to make Paps a offer of 4/50 plus the vesting clause which really gets it up to something like 5/60.

Wheres the link jung?.........

This is what pisses me off, they didnt even try:

"We never made an offer, haven't made an offer to this point," Cherington said. "We have had a lot of discussions with Sam and Seth [Levinson, Papelbon's agents], about the concepts. To this point, it's been clear that where we see it, what we'd be willing to do at this point in the offseason -- given what our other needs are and given what we feel the alternatives are -- is not something that matched up with what Pap was looking for.

Exactly, they did not even try or what is worse, Philli ate Cherington's lunch.

Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Dammit!

let's be clear' date=' Papelbon is not a villain at all here. This is all on the redsox front office.[/quote']Exactly. The idiots that defend the FO to the death like they are family members don't take a step back to realize that the FO basically told him to go. The FO scumbags are now going to try to spin this into a story that Papelbon didn't ask the Sox to Match the offer. Ridiculous. They didn't want him, and he had to get a job elsewhere. The contract was a reasonable contract for a pitcher of Papelbon's caliber. He's not the bad guy. It's almost always the FO pulling the strings. The idiot fans booed Damon even though he tried to get Theo on the phone and the only person he could reach was Tito. They kicked him to the curb and we booed him for taking a job. Let's do the same with Papelbon.

If Papelbon stinks up the joint next year' date=' i wonder how the fans bitching about his departure are going to rationalize it?[/quote']

Probably the same way JD Drew supporters rationalize his stint here despite the fact that he stole 14 million from us last year.

Thats not the point anyways.....They will pay Julio Lugo 9 million, DiceK 10 million, Lackey 17 million, Crawford 20 million.......but one of their home grown players comes up for contract....and instead of rewarding him for everything that hes done despite the fact they have shortchanged him year after year with 1 year contracts...........they let him walk out the door, and dont even pick up the f***ing phone.

I guess a promise of a "C" on his jersey wasnt enough in this case to make a homegrown player stay, what a joke.

20 million for a slap-hitting speedy outfielder is?

17 million for a fatass overrated AL west pitcher is?

If the sox can pay those guys, they can pay their own.

Papelbon didnt need to be reasonable, they sox have been lowballing him with 1 year deals for 3 years.

Good for you Papelbon, you went to a team that wanted you....a team that deserved you more than us.....they showed you that.

Where do you get the balls to bitch about albatross contracts, after the way you cry whenever you don't think the Red Sox spent enough money or pursued some big name hard enough?

This is a terrible contract for the Phillies, and it would have been a terrible contract for the Red Sox. I don't much care if you found Papelbon's huckleberry personality adorable or likeable.
