We have been a very tight community. Until recently. Good post.

I disagree, unless you're considering last season to be "recently." Remember how great those gamethreads were? It was a constant bitch fest with people posting crap like "eat a bag of dicks" and such.

By tight community, I don't think he meant monolithic, but i will not speak for him. There are still only a small handful of regular posters that are here day in and day out.

If it was limited to that' date=' it wouldn't be a problem. Differences of opinion about issues are too often all it takes for open season.[/quote']

Yeah, some people take opinions too personally.

I know, I'm one of them. The off season sucks. More will be back at the start of ST and the regular season.

Agree with that' date=' and no one's doing that.[/quote']It might not be happening right now, but it happens. We've both seen it. People have been hurling insults fairly regularly at Fred because of his use of nicknames for players, managers, coaches and FO personnel. As far as I could see, he wasn't insulting any posters, but yet there was vitriol directed at him. He's been accused of not being a real fan. He's been told that he can't be taken seriously, etc. So, it does indeed happen.

I don't necessarily think anything has changed in the time that I've been here. Sure, some people have come and gone, but its always been about baseball. And I would say there are about 20-30 posters here that can be considered regulars--even if some disappear for long periods of time-- and it is usually pretty easy to pick up what a person's posting style, and overall Sox point of view is if you read enough of their posts.

Red Sox officials seem to think they’ll know what they’ll be getting from the Cubs “before the official start of spring training,’’ but it's not clear if that refers to when pitchers and catchers report or when the full squad arrives, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

He tells people they're "rumpswabs" and s*** when they're not as negative as him. What else can I say? He's more than deserving of his chops. When you do that on top of the routine mockery of anyone who thinks they got a shot at the playoffs, you're asking for it. Simple as that.

Thank you, iOrtiz, for talking about baseball.

BACK ON TOPIC PLEASE It's been 5+ pages since the last baseball-related post.

Sports fandom is mainly an emotional exercise. A fan can like one player while disliking another player with essentially the same stats and value. It's not reasonable. It's not logical or consistent, but that's okay. We argue in the moment about today's team and today's game. Things change from day to day and year to year and so will the dialogue and opinions.

Maybe the Commissioner will award us Oswalt, since no one else seems to want him.

Here is the quote (from Feb 2):

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Red Sox are "unlikely" to add another starting pitcher before Spring Training, general manager Ben Cherington said Wednesday night.

Roy Oswalt, perhaps the biggest name left on the free-agent market, met with Rangers brass on Monday. He and Edwin Jackson had been repeatedly tied to the Sox. Jackson agreed to a one-year contract with Washington on Thursday.

Yes, I know he said that. But it doesn't mean they hadn't been trying to add another starter or that they aren't still trying. What exactly are you reading into what he said?

Btw does anybody know what happened with Garza? The last thing that I remember was that he had one feet in Detroit, didn't he? what happened?

He's still with the Cubs.

I think he got expensive. He settled with the Cubs for $9 million plus the Cubs want a basket full of goodies in a trade.

Calling someone an "idiot" is not a valid opinion unless you know that for a fact. And until you KNOW them, there is no rational basis for that kind of insult here. IMO, of course.

Thanks guys... So he is not longer an option I suppose.

It doesn't sound like it from what I read in an article in the Globe today by Nick Cafardo.

But this is how he ended the article and I hope he's right:

It’s astounding that this issue has gone unresolved so long.

But because it has, it must mean the Sox will end up with a decent player.

I guess that when I read that he is implying that the team is OK the way it is now, according to the yarn he is spinning. And it was in response to this post from you:

Well' date=' then there's still a slightly possibility. We'll see.[/quote']

If he doesn't play for the Red Sox, who DOES he play for? I don't know of another team that has a legitimate opening in their starting rotation right now, and Oswalt isn't going to accept a minor league assignment or a spot in the pen. I think he will either retire or play for the Red Sox, and its about 50-50 right now. Could be the Sox are waiting to see how the Ortiz thing works out.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If true, their (Red Sox FO) concern is about the reamaining money. If true, you have 2 paths. 1. Stay under the LT (unlikely since LL already said that they are already over it unless it is another smoke screen) 2. Do not go over the 2012 budget (whatever it means/is). Interesting.

More specifically, the Cards have Wainwright, Carpenter, Garcia, Lohse, and Westbrook as their starting five. Wainwright and Carpenter are aces; Garcia is pretty good too (career ERA 3.27), and the last two are in the final year of their contract. They do not NEED Oswalt at all, so why pay him $7M or so to wait for an injury.

The best FIT is with the Red Sox, if he will pitch here.

After the arbitration hearing' date=' how long does it take for the decision to be rendered.?[/quote']

As long as it takes you to make it.
