Girardi Hopes To Add One More Bat

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 3 at 4:28pm CST]

Only one MLB team outscored the 2011 Yankees, but manager Joe Girardi wouldn’t object if GM Brian Cashman adds one more bat to the roster before Opening Day. MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports that Girardi suggested he’d prefer a left-handed hitter and openly discussed free agents Johnny Damon, Raul Ibanez and Hideki Matsui.

"I think we've had a good offseason; I think Brian has done a really good job this offseason in what he's done,” he said. “But I think it's important to our club that you add that other bat. The American League is going to be tough."

Girardi said he’d prefer to add a left-handed hitter, though the club won't rule out right-handed bats. A lefty hitter would provide Girardi with a complement to Andruw Jones, who has power from the right side. The skipper acknowledged that Damon, Matsui and Ibanez have historically been strong offensive players, but cautioned that it’s too early to say which of those left-handed hitters, if any, are serious targets for the Yankees. Damon and Vladimir Guerrero appear to be seeking $5MM contracts for 2012.

Wow! The Yankee manager feels that he needs more weapons. Thank goodness our manager is content with his roster.<_>

I'm waiting for the year when Sabathia goes on the DL. The Yankees have gotten a ton of mileage out of him the last few years.

Sabathia is regarded as one of the most durable pitchers in MLB and he's only 31.

I have a feeling you'll be waiting for quite some time.

I just read the story about Carl Crawford, his brother and the alleged swindle. While it will likely take a court case to settle this the circumstances sure sound ugly and the kind of thing you would not want to see a "smart" ballplayer involved in whether he is actually culpable or not. The whole thing sounds stupid regardless of whether or not it is criminal.

Its just an accusation. Lets wait before passing judgement.

Too often in this country an accusation is tantamount to guilt.

I know it is just an accusation but that being said it is just one more off the field distraction which seems to follow this team. I can't recall any red sox team with this much baggage.

I am not judging the criminality or even the ethics of it one way or the other. However two brothers (carl and his brother in this case) starting a small business with a third party "friend" where the friend does not provide himself with adequate protections from the two brothers is a recipe for disaster. Apparently the party suing claims the loss of the $123,000.00 that he invested which is likely chicken feed to Carl but sounds like a good deal of money to the friend. The whole thing just sounds petty and stupid and something Carl should have just steered clear of.

This is supposedly a small construction company with one current active project....building a home for Carl's father????? Like I said the whole thing just sounds stupid but I am not judging the criminality or the ethics at all. Carl doesn't have better things to do?

Yes, there are still starters on the market

Ben Cherington said earlier this week that it was unlikely the Red Sox would add a starting pitcher before spring training. But he also said that he couldn't rule it out.

To the best of my ability, here are the unsigned starting pitchers who could come to camp and actually pitch:

Rich Harden

Ross Ohlendorf

Roy Oswalt

Brad Penny

Tim Wakefield

Great!! Wakefield is on the short list.

Ha. That gets the trolls out. Heck, everybody's got a limit. The Yanks have been really leaning on that guy. You wonder about what age he cracks.

Haven't heard about this one, but these guys live under a microscope nowadays, and they make so much money they are vulnerable to exploitation. The big money has been detrimental to the players in a lot of ways.

pretty useless list.

Ah what the heck, sign Harden and Ohlendorf too. But we might have to hire more mechanics for the pitchers garage. There will be a lot of heaps to be worked on.

Was Pedroia culpable in letting his bro prey on children?

Harden is a better #5 than anything the Sox have now.

I don't know anything about Pedroia and his brother but the Crawford piece says that all three went into this business together, the two Crawford brothers and the "friend" which is why all three are apparently on their way to court or on their way to an out of court settlement.

It is fairly easy to find out who's name is identified in the ownership of a business so I suspect that is why Carl is involved. Again I am not at all commenting on the ethics or criminality of what is being alleged. Simply commenting that the whole thing sounds stupid to begin with and something Carl should have steered as far away from as he could. If I were him I would not have engaged in the first discussion of such a business venture let alone end up with my name associated with the business.

As a baseball player Carl is a $21M per year enterprise. He needs this guy's $123,000.00 like he needs a hole in the head and if the whole thing was really some concoction devised so that his dad got a house and his brother got a business opportunity with the friend, I still would have steered as far away from it as possible. If he wants his dad to have a house just hire a prime contractor and build him his house. Starting a new business for that purpose if that was the purpose is just an unnecessary complication of dubious value.

A $21M per year baseball enterprise that just gagged up a miserable performance should have better things to do I would think.

Harden might give you a few good starts--in between DL trips.

I still have this uncomfortable feeling that Prune Face Henry is going to pull this "loyalty" s*** gig once again as he did with Diva when he offered him arbitration and "invite" the brutal and pathetic Weakflood to Spring Training. If that happens the fix is in and he will be on the club. Then what, Putritek next?????:thumbdown:dunno::dunno::dunno:

Loyalty had nothing to do with the Ortiz arbitration offer although I think JH did. JH wanted a major figure from the glory years around for the 100th year anniversary team. While Ortiz carries that sort of weight, neither Wake nor Veritek does. I think there is a wayyyyy outside chance we might see Wake because the pitching thing is so unsettled but I mean way outside. There is no earthly reason to insert Veritek into that same sort of situation.

I agree Fred. The Mouse and his Mouseketeers will more than likely invite the selfish jerk to ST and concoct some BS story about why he deserves a chance to make the club. Pretty pathetic, eh?

And this is why people hate Red Sox fans.......

They just hate obnoxious M*******s in general. People hated the C's in the 80's. Hated the Sox and Pats in the 00's. We'll see when it turns against the B's.

I mean, do you blame them bro?

Yea, I blame the bro. When the Red Sox were the lovable also rans with the seemingly the worst breaks going against them fans from where I live anyway felt sorry for them and hoped them nothing but the best. I saw this pre-2000 and afterward and I could see it clearly from both sides of the line. When the Red Sox started winning big suddenly the "fans" started making wise ass cracks about them, like they've gotten too big for their britches, that they think they're the Yankees, that they needed to be brought down a notch, like who the hell do they think they are now. The only two differences were that now they weren't the lovable also rans anymore and Red Sox fans started to show a lot more pride for which they were resented.

I'm pretty sure what I saw in my Southern California area is pretty much what was seen around the country. Maybe there was a tad of jealousy involved? Perhaps????? I dealt with mostly Dodger fans where I lived and their envy could cut through a knife, and as far as the Angel fans were concerned they hated us more than ever. Hell, after the 2007 ALDS I offered my hand to a Halo fan in the Angel parking lot and he refused it calling me and the Red Sox fans in general a rotten pack of sports and wished we would get creamed by either the Yankees or Guardians in the ALCS. Nothing but sour grapes and I look forward to the day when I can see that in their eyes again.
