I don't get how the FO isn't trying, unless they're spending all that money on Crawford and Gonzo and Lackey while hoping/knowing they will bust. Do you even realize how ridiculous that sounds

If stopping at the half-way point in assembling a playoff caliber team is your idea of commitment' date=' then you obviously must be thrilled right now about our chances next year. It's complacent pollyanna thinking like yours that allows this crap to continue.[/quote']

You said they're operating on the cheap and not committing to winning.

Pretty sure the amount of spending they did contradicts both theories, pops.

No surprise to me that you see it that way. Most pollyannas do. And thats's fine. RSN needs its rumpswabs, too.

You still haven't answered how your take is rational, dude.

RSN needs people who will direct completely unsubstantiated propaganda too I guess? :

It's really not that much of a contradiction. The Company I work for has billions coming and going out quite regularly. It is a huge financial enterprise, yet it will cheap out on lots of things. They just recently raised the amount that they will spend per employee for Christmas parties from $15 to $25. Right now, the Sox are trying to fill out the roster on the cheap, or at least that is what is being reported in the press. I am holding out hope that they blow through the LT cap.

Exactly. And I too am holding out hope that they're bluffing about not being willing to max the cap.

Uhhh, how does that apply to last year's splurging, and how does it look like they're trying to sell the team? Let him answer, he's a big boy.

The offseason isn't even over yet either. What's wrong with salary dumps? This team isn't the Yankees, and you know full well you'd complain the second one of their big signings busted.

Who were they supposed to get? Overpay for Wilson? Buehrle?

I'm as disappointed they didn't keep Paps as anyone, but if they went out and spent on Madson, you would've called them stupid, even though it's splurging. This is why your stance is irrational. No matter what the Sox do, you will criticize them in this situation.

You would've never came up with that yourself.

It still doesn't explain the spending of the last two seasons. It explains two low-cost moves.

I'm still waiting.

I've been highly critical of Blunder's mis-spending for years. He's perhaps the most incompetent GM currently in the business IMO. His MO was to replace proven players with 'cheaper' models, that's not a good practice. I was hoping they'd discontinue Blunder's philosophy---they haven't. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. I'll continue to be highly critical of them because they won't win anything this way.

New ownership is my ultimate goal. These guys have run their course and need to go.

I would have spent the money for Buehrle. He would have been a perfect fit IMO. But hey, that's me. There's plenty of people, like yourself obviously, who genuflect to their every move. No biggie.

I didn't think Buehrle's contract was that bad.

As we discussed on the other site, Fred, a lot of this points to Henry looking to sell the team over the next couple years. Everything points to it. They're operating on the cheap so they can leave the new owners with as few remaining contracts as possible. In the meantime they're just going to hope Valentine can catch lightening in a bottle while they find a buyer.

And that's fine with me. The fire in the belly to win has long since gone out with this ownership group. We'd be a lot better off with new, more committed ownership.

I'm in agreement with you there Muggah and furthermore ever since Prune Face married his pastry tart three years ago he has had very little interest in his team. He is leaving Valentine a palsied hand with which to deal with next season. The sooner he puts the team up for sale the better. The last three years have been a pill, and now I'm hearing from our bumbling GM that he is considering a role for Varitek. What the hell does that mean? The guy is through and I thought with the signing of Shoppach that we were finally rid of the guy, even if it was three years too late.

Yup.

It was a fair contract. He would have been an interesting option in our rotation.

A 180 million ballclub is operating on the cheap? Do you even see what you're saying?

Also, is there a chance there is actually something in this universe Fred doesn't bitch about?

Give me time and I'll think of something User. Let's be frank; we haven't really done much to upgrade the team this winter. We replaced our closer with an inferior replacement, we still don't have that fourth starting pitcher we need so badly, our bullpen is still very imcomplete, and we still need another RH hitting outfielder. I think if you look at it carefully and see how little we've done you would conclude there is a lot in which I or others can bitch about. Get me a quality starting pitcher, get me a RH hitting outfielder not named McDonald, get me a legitimate closer and you'll see the bitching stop lickity split.

I like Buehrle, but he has a career ERA of 4.95 at Fenway, and he's 1-8 against the Yankees with a 6.38 ERA.

Please wake up Emmz. Yes, we spent some big money last off season and a big one with Lackey the season before, but I don't call Punto, Melancon, Albers and Miller spending big bucks to upgrade the team. Right now we are worse off than last y ear. We need a quality starting pitcher and we haven't gottten one. We need a RH hitting outfielder very badly and we haven't gotten one. We need a knock out closer and at last check haven't gotten that either. We've been spending peanuts this winter and the only expenditure of funds was for resigning a DH who can't play defense and who by his signing has blocked our best RH power prospect for at least another year, and has stopped in its tracks the money we need to get the upgrades we need. Those are not suppositions, they are not bitching for bitching sake, they are FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone who believes the Red Sox have done what is needed to get back to the top next year is living in a dream world. Right now we are worse off than we were at the end of the 2011 season and I would like to see you VA or my fellow Dago buddy or anyone else tell me we are not. Last season was a total embarrassment for the Red Sox and should be for their fans. It's no fun bitching about it but it is equally frustrating to see what happened and the little we've done to rectify it. Killing one of the messengers isn't going to get the job done, and if we don't spend the money to get that closer, that solid starting pitcher and that RH hitting outfielder we need so badly, we can all sit back and watch other teams in October. I don't want that and neither should you or anyone else.

So maybe the Red Sox aren't playoff contenders for one season.

Oh the horror.

Buerhle would have cost much more to play in Boston. After the year they had, players cost more. Plus, who on earth wouldn't want to move to Miami? I would have loved to see Buerhle here, but 17 million per year is too much.

Well, see, I was a fan long before 2001.

Who in the hell knows how the 2012 season will shape up. Excuse my "pollyanna" fandom. I'm optimistic. You are a name-calling (Blunder, FrancoMA, and what ever name you bestow on Cherrington depending on you post) pessimist. Good luck to your Lakers.

All this negative crap is a little overwhelming for a lot of us out here.

Can't wait for Truck Day, Spring Training and BASEBALL season. Get your s*** together and GO RED SOX!!
