.295/.335/.553' date=' if you use IsoD and IsoP and just plug 'em in. The power in particular will probably be a bit less, maybe ..480-.500 but that's still a decent player.[/quote']

Ill take a .815-.835 OPS from a 23 year old any day of the week. And I'm not convinced his power would go down much. He's consistently had a high power ceiling through the minors.

Stay away from Ubaldo. The cost to reward ratio is terrible.

What's the cost though? Who would they deal that has a huge shot at contributing significantly over the next 3 seasons anyway, when they should be making a sustained push for repeat World Series?

Weiland? No. Lavarnway? No. Even Reddick--though very good this season--has Kalish behind him. Middlebrooks? No. Iglesias, Brentz, Navarro? No, no, no.

The Sox are in the enviable position of having nearly every position player and an entire rotation locked up for the next few years. They can resign Ortiz and probably happily deal with a Lowrie/Scutaro combination even for another year if they need to.

I think the Sox are about to the get to the point where only the true superstar potential prospect becomes "untouchable", and everyone else is available. Some think Theo is just blowing smoke, but i agree with him that this is a very deep farm right now with lots of upside. They don't have the sexy prospects they did a few years ago with Ellsbury and Buchholz potentially available, but they have enough to provide MLB regular caliber players while not even hurting the team's depth that much.

How much would it really hurt them for the next few years to move Weiland, Doubront and Middlebrooks for Ubaldo? It might limit some options, but they would solidify their rotation significantly. I can see why they would be serious about kicking those tires, especially to keep him out of NY.

One advantage we have in our farm system over the Yankees is that we have more major league ready players (Reddick, Lavarnway, Kalish, Doubront, Weiland, Navarro, etc.). The Yankees have some great prospects, but their pitching especially with the exception of Nova, is a year or two away.

Which is a pretty decent advantage, since the Sox lower minors probably have better talent than their MLB ready guys. Someone in that lower pack of players could emerge to be a true beast, while their current MLB ready-ish players are ready but maybe with lower ceilings.

That said, I suspect that the idea of Tulo and Middlebrooks on the left side of that infield for the next 5 years is pretty enticing, especially with another few MLB caliber players going that way as well.

It also helps that many of the Yankees best prospects (Montero, Sanchez, Betances, Banuelos, Brackman, Romine) are struggling right now which may make them unappealing to Rockies scouts.

I really like the idea of Ubaldo, but there's a possibility that he could come over here to the AL East and bomb. That should at least be considered.

I'm telling you... If we bring Ubaldo We'll win the WS.

Seriously, I can't believe that somebody at least doubt about his quality, he just need fresh air, and in Boston I believe that He would fit just great.

Imagine this -->

Beckett- Lester- Buch- Jimenez! back to back, and with our offense, we would be more than balanced... In that scenario bring me the damn Phillis, any day.

No more Millers/Weilands/Lackeys, etc.

Red Sox Rumors: Rasmus, Starting Pitchers

By Tim Dierkes [July 27 at 11:26pm CST]

The latest on the Red Sox, who have the best record in the American League...

The Red Sox are “still looking at all options,” including outfielders, but their focus may be shifting to pitching, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.*

Lauber hears that the Red Sox didn’t actively pursue Colby Rasmus.

The Red Sox will consider Rich Harden, Erik Bedard, Hiroki Kuroda, Jeremy Guthrie, Aaron Harang, and Ubaldo Jimenez as they decide whether to add a starting pitcher, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. *ESPN's Jayson Stark names Kuroda, Bedard, Harden, and Jimenez as pitchers on their radar. *He notes that the Red Sox have "stayed involved from the beginning" on Jimenez.

The Red Sox wouldn't give up anything really good for Kuroda, opined MLB Network's Peter Gammons on WEEI's Mut & Merloni show.

Gammons believes the Cubs' Reed Johnson is the most logical fit for an outfielder for Boston.

That sounds like an awesome rotation. Even if Ubaldo put up a consistent 3.80-4.00 ERA would be enough. It's not like he'd have to come in and throw 2.00+ our offense is nuts.

It's crazy right now with the wild NFL FA market and the MLB trade deadline nearing hope something big happens for one of our teams.

MLB Trade Rumors summarized today’s batch of Jimenez rumors and the belief still appears to be that the Yankees have the “best chance” of acquiring the talented right-hander if the Rockies do decide to pull the trigger.

Colorado, though, appears to want an astronomical return from the Yankees. One report referenced by MLBTR said the Rockies want three of four top of the line Yankee farmhands — Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, Jesus Montero, and Ivan Nova.

Hell for that price you guys can have him

None of those Yankee prospects will amount to anything. I knew from spring training that the Yankee hype machine was in full gear. They had every one of their announcers heaping praise on these guys even when they weren't playing. I predicted then that they would package a few of those media hype creations for a top starter at the deadline. The Rockies were too stupid to catch onto the scam.

Rafael Furcal Drawing Interest

By Tim Dierkes [July 28 at 9:57am CST]

Multiple teams are showing interest in Dodgers infielder Rafael Furcal, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney, though L.A. would have to eat a major portion of the $4.8MM owed to him. Though he's having a terrible season, Furcal is a good hitter when he's right and looks better in a weak market for middle infielders. The Cardinals are known to be focused on middle infield help.

Furcal, 33, is hitting .195/.267/.241 in 147 plate appearances.

He's in his walk year. He'd probably be cheap.

He's hitting .195 this year, but that's not a good reflection of the type of player he is. Quick guy, almost a poor man's Reyes.

I'd rather go after Brendan Ryan, but if Furcal were healthy I could see him coming here and helping us. He's a good player. He's just not on the field as much as you'd want.

On the other hand, since we have Lowrie, or will at some point, and we have Scutaro right now, that can probably be managed, so sure. Bring on Furcal.

He's a sub-.200 hitter who has been consistently bad the last four months. If we wanted that, why not get Iggy's glove up here? Furcal isn't worth the roster space.

Buster_ESPN Buster Olney

This time of year, 2- or 3-game samples mean something to teams looking to catch a streaking player--and Furcal 7-for-18 in the last week.

I know 18 AB is such a small sample size it's almost not worth mentioning, but the guy did hit .300/.366/.460 in 97 games last year with 22 SB. That's basically Pedroia with less OBP and a little less pop. If you can get him on the cheap, he would be worth taking a flyer. With a .366 OBP, he's a perfect 9 hole hitter.

Nothing to sneeze at for a shortstop. Especially because he's also a competent defender.

Seriously? We're trying to add depth to our pitching staff by adding someone who we're going to have to add depth behind? Ridiculous.

Agree...Sounds like another Cameron..

Lowrie isn't really a shortstop. On a team that didn't have Pedroia he'd be a second baseman. People thought that all along, and this year confirmed it. Just can't spend a year making the throw from the hole and stay healthy.

A power lefty is a power lefty.

Well, to be fair I didn't realize that he had pitched this season. I thought he was out until now. Ok, this deal is a little better than I initially thought.

So for in 2011, 90 IP, 8.5 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 3.00 ERA. To put that into perspective, Lester has an 8.7 K/9. I guess I'm good with this deal.

I would actually say Lowrie is a 3rd baseman. He has zero range, so middle infield is a weakness.

At this point I would label him as a HOFer considering our actual B-roster

But I'd rather insist in Ubaldo... We'll see.

Guardians Very Close To Acquiring Kosuke Fukudome

By Tim Dierkes [July 28 at 11:02am CST]

11:02am: A Cubs source told ESPN's Jim Bowden the prospects are outfielder Abner Abreu and pitcher Carlton Smith (Twitter link).

Furcal is bound to get hot the last two months. He is finally healthy this year. Expect performance close to his career average.

Bedard would be OK--if he can get off the DL--and stay off.

He has pitched well this year--when he's pitched.

The Red Sox are "all over" Mariners lefty Erik Bedard, report Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, and they'll be among the many teams scouting him against the Rays tomorrow night. They note that the Mariners had two scouts watching Boston's Double-A club on Wednesday and one watching their Triple-A affiliate.

Will Ellsbury, Chiang (.338/.398/.653) would be expendable and he has defensive concerns that would likely prevent him from being handed over a starting job on the Red Sox.

An NL source tells Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald the Red Sox are "not hot as of now" for Jimenez.
