Buch apparently is still feeling pain' date=' but was supposed to have thrown a pen today. He should get another MRI, I [b']hope[/b] he might have something else going on

Fixed.

And he's seen multiple doctors who all say he's going to have to just bear the pain and throw through it.

by the way, his session is tomorrow.

I was hoping Wakefield would step up today to be able to claim one of the two open rotation spots until Buch comes back. With the remainder of Buch's 2011 being so uncertain' date=' the bottom two spots could be black holes of disaster, and the third spot is dependent on Lackey continuing his progress. I see no choice but for Theo to get a starter by the deadline.[/quote']

Wake can still give you 5 or 6 decent innings. Just don't push him too hard, as was done today.

... And can be blasted as well. He is a coin flip, give him his 200th-W with another 10Rs support and send him to the BP.

For what it's worth, I bet the Sox FO feels pretty comfortable with their team as it is now and won't give up too much for a significant pitching upgrade. The way I see it, they have, AT WORST, Beckett, Lester and Lackey as a top 3, with Wake or Miller as a possible 4th game starter. If they get Buchholz back they are in good hands. I would trust Lackey for a playoff game or two. I know that goes against what most people here think, but he's paid the big bucks and has a track record of success in playoffs.

That scenario sounds like a scary movie. I hope that our FO is working on this; gonna cost? Gonna be hard? Gonna cost a lot of money and top prospects? OF COURSE, ALWAYS, if you want to bring a solid SP for a long shot; and guess what? The scenario demands it.

yeah, right. back pain comes with the territory. live with it, kid, like half the population.

as long as it doesn't affect your delivery.

these guys get MRI's like drinking water. Try to get your doctor to get you an MRI.They are $$, and insurance companies don't want to pay. The real world of health care.

That's the point. It affects the delivery.

Certainly, they never tip their hand in public statements. All we can evaluate is what we think they need. If Buch comes back, their primary need is a big bat, because of the stupid NL rules. Taking Ortiz out of the lineup in the WS could be devastating. A big hitting RF shouldn't cost much for 3 months and it could solidify a Championship run. If Buch can't comeback, they will need Lackey to step up big, or they will need to get a stating pitcher which will be more costly than a right fielder.

I think it's really, really strange that the Sox have DL'd JD Drew and have not called up a replacement for him. I can't remember a time when they've ever gone into a game with a 24 man roster, but that's exactly what they're doing today. I think the Sox have something in the works that is very close, and I think it revolves around a RF.

My honest guess is that they're going to shock everyone by doing one of two things. Either they're going to trade for Beltran, or they're going to trade for Quentin. And I see it happening in the next day or two.

It is odd that there has been no corresponding move. I hope they are close to making a move.

I think they know that they're about to make a move and they don't want to waste an option. What's very interesting is that the deadline isn't until Sunday, and you know that they won't go more than 1-2 days with a 24 man roster, so something has to be right on the fringe right now. The more I think about it, the more I expect something to happen by tonight.

Then again, they could be waiting to see if something that is in the works right now pans out, and if it doesn't, they could call up an OF from AAA today or tomorrow.

Does the propaganda machine usually heat up like this in the second half?

Corresponding move was Lester being activated.

Exactly' date=' gotta love the trade deadline.[/quote']

So now we're going to run with a 13 man pitching staff and Navarro, Varitek, and McDonald off the bench? I don't think so. I think there is a move in the making.

LHP Jon Lester will be coming off the disabled list to make his first start since July 5, which is good news.

Even better news, we presume, was the sight of Clay Buchholz, on the DL since June 17 because of a lower back strain, throwing a bullpen session under the watchful eyes of manager Terry Francona, pitching coach Curt Young and head athletic trainer Mike Reinold.

Buchholz warmed up with some flat-ground long tosses before moving into the bullpen, where he worked for about 10 minutes before wrapping up the session.

We'll check in with him later to see how it went.

I think a move will eventually be made (Drew hasn't actually been placed on the DL yet) but we won't have a 24 man roster as previously suggested. We could fill a corner outfield spot internally with Sutton for the time being.

Actually, if you could Ortiz as part of "the bench" that's all positions covered and only McD giving you any concern regarding quality.

OF: McD

IF: Navarro

1B: Ortiz

C: Tek

American League teams lever like having too many bench players. That's why versatility is so prized. It wouldn't surprise me if this was what we ran with until the 31st at least.

Clay Buchholz (back) threw a successful 30-pitch bullpen session on Monday afternoon.

Buchholz told reporters after the workout that he feels about 80 percent healthy. The right-hander will throw another bullpen session Thursday and is aiming to return to the Boston rotation around mid-to-late August.

Mid to Late August... ugh...

Need: SP. :(

Don't worry, Beckett and Lester are still Beckett and Lester and Lackey has had 3 not-horrible starts in a row. I think those 3 can keep us afloat until Buchholz is back, it's all good.

According to Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com, Hiroki Kuroda would consider waiving his no-trade clause to join the Yankees or Red Sox.

We have heard some rumblings that Kuroda would prefer not to pitch on the East Coast, though Jon Heyman of SI.com recently reported that the Japanese right-hander would be willing to waive his no-trade on a "case-by-case basis." While New York and Boston are possibilities, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com notes that the "hottest teams" for Kuroda are the Tigers, Guardians and Rangers.

I could go for Kuroda. He's solid. Low WHIP. Throws strikes. Misses a bat or two. He could give up an extra run in his ERA in the AL East and still be effective

WEEI just reported that Sutton will in fact be the one called up. So much for a trade being in the works.

Weiland is getting sent down.

That's what I figured. I was confused because of the article about Weiland being sent to the bullpen.
