What that shows is that he wasn't in top form ... not that he was terrible. If someone performs terribly they're giving up rockets left and right. Mo gave up two hard hit line drives, and one decently hit ground ball. He didn't have great movement and he didn't have great location. He was rather mediocre. But that's still a long way from awful ... awful is Trevor Cahill and Phil Hughes from Friday night.

EDIT: You've adequately defended the position that he wasn't in top form and didn't pitch well. I completely agree there. But you haven't defended the position that he was awful ... and those are two very different things.

Just to quickly chime in on the Jacko/AW thing ... who cares got banned and who didn't. Both are good posters ... and I like AW here, he makes the Yankees GT significantly more active.

Just because someone pitched terribly doesn't mean that they gave up rockets. With the way Rivera was pitching, he's lucky he only gave up 4 singles, although the line drive to end the inning would have been extra bases if it got by Teixeira. You admit his location was poor and his movement was off. That basically means Rivera was throwing 91 mph straight fastballs down the middle as the graphic indicates. That's terrible pitching, even if it was a rare bad performance from Rivera.

Any regrets over the Nady, Marte trade with the pirates? I was just checking out the leader boards for the NL and was surprised to see Jeff Karstens second in the NL in ERA and 3rd in WHIP. Daniel McCutchen is also doing quite well and Jose Tabata has had mixed results but is still just 22.

While he wasn't in top form, the movement on his cutter was still good enough to avoid a good deal of solid contact. I see your point ... I just hesitate to say he pitched terribly, by any general standard. Regardless, this discussion has run its course.

Definitely regret it now. Karstens' date=' IMO, had no shot in NY, but we dumped him as the 4th guy in this move.[/b'] Tamara is gonna be good, IMO

That's fair enough, I felt the same way when the Red Sox traded Renteria after a year and he played well for Atlanta.

Yankees have already gotten 2 gift calls in the first 4 innings. That will probably even out at some point.

Ouch. These are your 2011 Mariners! I'm holding out hope Felix might be able to beat Hughes but even then I wouldn't be surprised if the Mariners find a way to lose.

Where was the shortstop going???

Wedge looks pissed. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some roster moves after this one.

I am surprised the M's were in the race prior to this streak. They look lifeless, leaderless, and lacking in fundamentals. They give away at bats, they dont coordinate in the field, their pitchers get behind hitters, and the manager seems to have given up completely

Garcia doesnt even look like he's trying. He's just flipping pitches up there on the outside corner and these guys flail at it like they dont know its coming. Freddy doesnt even need to work hard. He's probably going to have to run some sprints after the game to get his work in

By the way, they also dealt Ohlendorf. Ohlie will end up being the better pitcher in the deal, IMO. He got hit off the head last yr and is dealing with nagging injuries this yr, but he's a good pitcher. Regardless, we signed Marte to a long term deal and essentially got production during one playoff run for those 3.5yrs. We got a hot Nady in 2008, but he was hurt in 2009 and never suited up again. And I remember a700 at the time saying this was a steal and I told him that it wasnt. Tabata will be a very good player for a long time. Karstens is in his element in the NL, McCutchen can gets guys out from the pen and Ohlie will be a #2-3 starter in Pitt once he's healthy. Turns out to be a horrible deal

This is good stuff. It's like watching Bad News Bears.

They would be sellers at the deadline if anyone wanted the trash they're peddling. If they dont move Felix and if Bedard stays hurt, then they'll stay intact. They suck

They've got a few pieces people might be interested in. Cust would be a good buy low option, Figgins could use a change of scenery and I'm sure there are some teams that would like to get their hands on Gutierrez. Nothing that's likely to net them a new crop of prospects though.

Of the 3 closest teams in the Wild Card, who do you think poses the biggest threat of making things interesting - Rays, Angels or Guardians?

Either the Rays or the Angels ... and I'd lean towards the Rays, despite their poor offense.

Olivo was one of the few guys who I thought played well or at least was still trying when the Sox faced the Mariners.

Freddy was pretty bad tonight. Splitter wasn't all that good, and he was often in the middle of the plate. Good thing they were facing the Mariners.

Freddy was nibbling early and didnt look too awful. Once the Yanks got the lead, he was flipping the ball up there down the middle. They still couldnt hit it. I doubt Freddy takes that approach if the game was 1-0. But Freddy was Freddy. Throws a ton of junk, nothing hard and somehow beats a big league lineup. I thought the smoke and mirrors would last maybe a month, but this is month #4 and he's been money

Yeah I have no complaints about Freddy overall, he has blown any sort of realistic expectations out of the water. I just thought he was in the middle of the plate all night, even before the Yankees blew the game open.
