Very exciting that they're so close to landing AGon. Sox should definitely try to keep Kalish and Iglesias if at all possible. Pretty sure, though, that Iglesias isn't going anywhere. A $6.25 million signing bonus prospect is a guy you hold onto until he proves he's legit or a bust.

Jesus Christ is this about to happen? I just came home from dinner and here's multiple pages worth of posts.

If it really is Gonzalez for Kelly and Rizzo they should pull the trigger, and it sounds like they might be doing that. I f***ing hope so.

When I heard Heath Bell too I almost had a heart attack.

Gonzalez would be a HUGE addition to this team.

Gonzalez means they can (and should) get Jayson Werth as a RHB compliment. That would make the 2011 lineup really formidable.

I would still like to see Crawford in the Lineup. WE have Youk, Pedroia who can tear the cover off the ball from the RHB. Plus Gonzo like to take the ball the other way. With Crawford we may get an overflow of Lefties but that will make the RHPs dread our lineup. It would give us 5 lefties in the Lineup. This Trade does mean bye to Beltre unless Theo thinks of putting Gonzo in Left.

How many of those guys amounted to anything? Sure, some were good here and there......but I am sure a lot of deals were left on the table because they didnt want to trade any of those players.

If the Padres are willing to trade AGON.....you do whatever you can to get that deal done.

A lot of the guys made the majors. they just didnt make it too the AS Status. Some of those guys could have been stockpiled behind better players. Moss is a starter in Pit last i heard.

While I agree with the sentiment of your post, I disagree with this.

Should the Sox be willing to just throw in Jose Iglesias or Ryan Kalish, Jed Lowrie or Stolmy Pimentel because the Padres ask for them as part of negotiations? We're talking about one year of a player that the Padres can't keep. A potential top tier starter and very good 1B are a lot to give up.

The Sox aren't being bent over in prison here, they are making a trade. The value should be more or less equal on both sides. We always assume the 'big name' trade piece is the only real value in the trade, but prospects like Kelly and Rizzo are very, very good baseball players who are simply too young to be contributing yet. Getting those two plus would be a very good day for Padres fans.

What would you rather have?

Roster fillers or one of the best middle of the lineup hitters in all of baseball?

Picture this:

CF Ellsbury LH

2B Pedroia RH

1B AGON LH

3B Youk RH

DH Ortiz LH

LF Werth RH

RF Drew LH

SS Scutaro RH/ Lowrie Switch

C Salty Switch/ Varitek Switch

talk about flexability and lineup matchups!!!!!

Iglesias would be the ONLY guy I will not be willing to part with. He is their future SS and there will be an opening in the near future for him to step in. Everyone else.....owell, thats the nature and consequences of getting one of the best middle of the lineup guys in the game.

But if they don't have to give up a guy like Kalish or Lowrie then why would they? Sometimes it takes some hard bargaining to keep guys, but talents like Kalish and Lowrie are really not easy to come by--despite the existence of an entire "universe" of minor league players.

There is a spectrum of minor league players that spans the worst and youngest players in the rookie leagues and goes up to the Stephen Strasburg/Bryce Harper/Justin Upton type player who merely await their chance to compete with the big boys. When you look at their skills, players like Kalish and Lowrie have proven themselves to be closer to the "MLB regular lock" end than to the "flame out" end.

They should be much more open to moving unproven/untested prospects than moving the MLB ready guys. If the deal were going to involve Kalish or Lowrie, it should be centered around those guys, not with them as throw-ins.

If you take a look at a deal that I would approve of:

AGON

Heath Bell

One of their BP arms (Gregerson, Thatcher, Adams, Mujica, Webb)

for

DiceK (waives NTC)

Scutaro

Kalish

Anderson

Doubront

The we turn around and sign Cliff Lee!!!!!!!!

Bonerjam!!!!

Then you will see that..........

I want Lowrie as part of the current club.

I know it wont happen, but trading Kalish, Lars Anderson and Felix Doubrount along with DiceK and Scutaro is appealing for both clubs.

SD gets an OF who is highly touted. A prospect first baseman who serves zero purpose here with Youk and the possibility of AGON coming here and Doubrount, another quality prospect who might do well in the NL west. Throw in a starting SS and a pitcher who would project to do well in their ballpark and in their league and we may have something.

The sox go out and sign Werth and with the opening in the starting rotation...they should at LEAST kick the tires on Cliff Lee.

The team would be completed. No other moves necessary.

Agon, Werth, Lee, Bell and a bullpen arm (in the deal with SD) bascially solidify the entire teams needs. Its a lot to ask, but the Sox need to start getting things moving here.

Sox aren't the Yankees, they'll ether sign Werth or Crawford, I don't see them signing one of them and then offering Lee a 23-24mill per year contract.

Even outside the US, I find the baseball chatter. Well, all the sites I am looking at point to a 4 for 1 deal. Heath Bell is no longer in the deal. Two players "definitely" in the deal are Rizzo and Kelly. Outside of that, nobody is speculating aside from saying that there are no "current" MLBers in it. That rules Lowrie, Kalish and DiceK out
Posted
I have had my doubts about Kelly over the past year, so I think the sox moving on from him might be a selling high strategy, even though he is coming off a rough season. I think going to SD would be a best case scenario for his development. In terms of Rizzo, he has an AdGon ceiling, but he's at least 1 and maybe 2 yrs away from contributing at the big league level. I'd leave the "balance" of the trade to the other 2 prospects, cause if it's really just Kelly, Rizzo and 2 lottery tickets, then the sox did very well. If they start dealing some of their high end arms in the lower levels (like Younginer) then it's more of a wash

So Agon possibly going to the Red Sox, who would have thought :dunno:

I agree with Jacko, from what I read it's probably a 4-1. Which is more then I thought SD could get with Agon having surgery and only one year left on his deal. But if it get's it done, so be it.

I'm guessing it's Kelly and Rizzo(most reported two names) + Doubront and possibly Reddick/one of the SS prospects not named Iglesias.

From Hayes, Olney et al, it looks like players are agreed to, Gonzalez is reported to be in Boston for a physical, Kelly is involved, Bell is not. They are working on contract extension. I would guess Rizzo or Anderson has to be included, also.

OK if he is really in Boston for a physical this could really be it! Hopefully everything goes well and the surgical repair is showing the correct amount of healing!

Where are you seeing the story about him being in Boston?

"Cafardo says talks have centered around Casey Kelly and Anthony Rizzo, and the deal "would likely involve three or four players from the Sox, including one who is major league-ready."

I assume that player is Reddick or Doubront.

More then likely.

According to a major league source, trade talks between the Red Sox and San Diego Padres with regard to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez have reached the stage where medical clearance and a contract extension may be the only things standing in the way of a deal that would bring the lefthanded-hitting slugger to Boston.

The 28-year-old Gonzalez is expected in Boston today for a physical.

I'm dancing the jig lol

I bet he gets a few million raise this season. Somewhere around 10-15M. And then 5-7 years at 18-22M AAV for the extension.

I don't like the fact Iglesias is assumed to be in the deal. But I will learn to cope if he is.

I'm going to pull a Jacko on this one. I may have been arguing that there have been better options at 1B.... but now that we're likely getting him, this is pretty f***ing great.

There's nothing to celebrate.....yet.

Well with him being in Boston to take a physical and MLB granting a window for extension talks, I think it's fair to be more optimistic then at anytime during the Agon saga. But yes the ink isn't dry yet.

I reaaly hope Xmas omes early today. Kelly, Rizzo, Iglesias, reddick, Dubront for Agon? Yes please.

Kelly is overrated, Rizzo wouldn't be needed, and Iglesias is an interesting prospect but not a sure bet. Would rather dump Navarro, but if the Sox need to overpay for Agon, I'm ok with it.
