"Just waking up beautiful day in sarasota about to get some breakfast. Can't worry about things that are out of your control"

Hahahaha, great post Casey. Considering he's Florida born and he'll be going into a pitcher's paradise, it doesn't sound like a bad deal for him.

I dated a girl by the name of Kelly a while back. She was pretty bland, and we decided to end things. I sort of realized it wasn't a huge loss, and since then, whenever my love life hasn't worked out, I say to myself "There's always another Kelly".

If this finalizes, I'll get to go watch Kelly pitch next year. The SD AA affiliate is the San Antonio Missions.

As #RedSox lose some prospects, they get 2 picks for Martinez and 2 more for Beltre and 1 for Lopez. At least 5 of the first 50 or so

Can this deal maybe be the best example (yet) of how the Red Sox have absolutely DOMINATED the current CBA rules related to draft picks?

Yeah, their AAA team just moved from Portland :( Kelly and Rizzo would have been interesting to see... oh well.

Holy crap that's a good deal' date=' especially with Kelly's stock on the low side after last year.[/quote']

Honestly Doj, I think the only people who truly think his stock slid last year are those who are incapable of understanding his level of competition, that he was working on things, etc.,

Every report by reputable scouts (that I saw) still thought Kelly was a near-untouchable prospect. Keith Law (in the the Alex Speier podcast--which is must-listen material IMO) mentioned that he probably wouldn't trade Kelly 1:1 for Gonzalez. CLearly the Sox FO didn't agree, but most likely based on their organizational depth rather than Kelly not being good.

He's an extrordinary athelete with a big league family and near- big league stuff at a very young age. He will be a good pitcher sooner than later. A deal like this treats him like his stock didn't fall at all. This looks like the type of package that one would expect for a year of one of baseball's most elite players.

So is A-Gon. But Your right about the Picks thing. We have dominated. Im Gonna miss Beltre a little and the team screwing around with him and his head.

What do you mean by this?

The team screwing around with him? THey signed him to a good one year deal, he produced at an elite level in a contract year (again) and now he'll get a good payday elsewhere.

In the process he knocked two of the Sox players out for extended periods by being a middle linebacker charging into the OF after flyballs.

I think Beltre's departure was predictable when they signed him last year.

Gonzalez has literally been THE target from the moment the Sox lost out on Teixeira.

This is sweet. Finally, a f***ing big bat to get this club where they should have been with Teixeira.

Ya that's best case scenario. What if Detroit signs Crawford/Werth and LAA sign 2 of Crawford/Beltre/Soriano. The Sox will be getting no 1st rounders.

Were it just about talent, the FO wouldn't do this move. But its about tv ratings and money, and being a good team now instead of later. And when I say that, its not necessarily a criticism-- if they lose big tv ratings for a few years, they lose big money for a few years. And that means they can afford fewer big stars, less money on their farm system and draft picks, etc. This is the kind of move that will get people watching again!

I have been saying this for months. Agon was the future and any player that could prevent them from getting him would not becoming to the Red Sox long term. I thought they would wait until later and get him. But everything else seemed to line up.

You mean you arent gonna miss him nailing HRs from One Knee.

Its gonna be a Good Lineup even if we dont get Werth/Crawford

C-Salty

1B- A-Gon

2B- Laser Show

3B- Youk

SS- Scutaro

LF- Ells

CF- Cameron

RF- Drew.

That is still not a bad lineup.

MLBTR is reporting it is a done deal, but that the contract may take a couple days to work out. So an official announcement may take a bit.

Source: #Padres also getting PTBN in addition to Kelly, Rizzo, Fuentes - 4-for-1. #RedSox #MLB

-Rosenthal

Probably a player drafted in 2010? I hope it isn't anyone too significant.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that the Padres will also receive a player to be named, so it's a 4-for-1 swap.

I believe that means a player from this years draft. Could Hoyer have squeezed out Vitek?

edit: Ok I got beat twice...

The A-gon move sets up a big OF pickup perfectly because of the low 2010 cost. As Agon's contract goes up, Cameron/Drew's income leaves. Plus, they still have a good deal of money lying around still because of money saved from Vmart.

This Is True. I just like having his Glove over there at Third. Not To say Youk cant do the same. Just a little worried about the time it takes to shake off the rust. As for A-Gon 1B is on lock down. Tex Will now have someone to fight against for GG at 1st.

I really don't think they are as worried about the ratings stuff as everyone is making it seem. That's not to say they weren't worried, but as opposed to people being DISINTERESTED in the Sox, or losing interest, people were very anxious for them to get another player or two. The baseline interest was still there, unlike teams that are truly fading from view. I see that as an important distinction.

Also, the talent of Kelly and Rizzo etc., probably is more valuable than one year of Gonzalez, but they were also both redundant--Kelly because of the deep rotation and Ranaudo; Rizzo only if Gonzalez joins the team.

The move makes a lot of sense regardless of ratings. I think they would have done it even if ratings weren't a concern. Like I said earlier (and as well all acknowledge) the Sox have been targeting Gonzalez for years.

Even though it doesn't seem like it, Tex has been fighting against Youkilis for GG at 1st... or should have been. Youk is a great fielder.

Youk is a great Defensive player as well Offensive but is overlooked. Gonzo Over at the 3 spot will mean the Best 3-4 infield tandem in Baseball. Laser Show and Gonzo.

The 40-man roster freeze is in effect until next week's the Rule 5 Draft, so it's possible the player is a minor leaguer not on the 40-man that's eligible for the Rule 5.

Re: additional (4th) prospect being a 2010 draft pick:

"@jorgearangure Couldn't be -- PTBNL has to be named in 6 mos., and 2010 draftees won't have been signed a year by then. Prob a Rule 5 elig."

I assume this is true. I love how people just immediately leap to the Sox dealing ANOTHER 1st round pick. There's just this natural inclination for people to think that one year of an established player is worth 4, 5, 6 1st round talents. WAR says otherwise.

Heard that is possible that is some one who is not on the 40 man so that if the trade were to go through now that fourth player wouldnt be taken in the Rule 5

If Lowrie reaches his potential and stays healthy that's one heck of an infield over the next 4 years or so. Strong defense and offense at every position. Kinda helps take the pressure off Catcher offensively, especially if we subsequently sort out the OF.

The only risk is that Youk has lost range and can't hack it full time at 3B anymore, or can't do so and stay healthy. It's a non-negligible risk. I don't think it happens that way though.

I jumped initially, but calmed down once I found out the details.

Yep.

Just a reminder to everyone. Sox probably just got Adrian Gonzalez without dealing Lowrie, Kalish, Bard, Doubront, Iglesias, Buchholz (yes, some would have traded Buchholz for him), etc., Virtually no loss at all to the current MLB team. None.

That's why you wait for the right deal and play hardball with prospects as much as with established players.

Let's be honest, wouldn't some people have had the Sox dealing Rizzo for a middle reliever or two last year? That would have sucked.

I'm sure he can manage for 2 years.
