Brian Cashman mentioned a few things at WFAN’s annual “Breakfast with a Champion” this morning.

Cashman said he’ll be surprised if Derek Jeter sticks at shortstop during all four years of his contract. He sees the Captain winding up in the outfield.

Cashman acknowledged that Joba Chamberlain has not been the same since his injury in Texas in 2008. It’s the first time anyone involved with the team has publicly discussed the issue even though it was quite obvious. Once again, he said there’s no chance Joba will start.

Still nothing new on Andy Pettitte, but Cashman did confirm that the lefty is working out to remain in baseball shape. Cash said his best case rotation scenario at this point has Andy coming back and Ivan Nova sliding down into the fifth starter’s spot.

Jorge Posada is the full-time designated hitter, and the starting catcher’s job will be an open competition in Spring Training

I guess Cashman is looking for a Severance Package.

So Pettite is working out? That's a surprising development.

That's something we've known since the Soriano press conference, when Girardi mentioned it.

Which makes me think he's comin back. I actually think he might benefit from a June return or so. Let's say he reports in mid April rather than mid February, works out for 2 weeks just like pitchers and catchers, throws in minor league games for a month and comes back June 1. He'd probably be better suited to finish the season strong

This is interesting. Really not sure what to make of this, but from what I've heard about Ensberg, I don't think he'd be making stuff up for the hell of it.

So you believe it's something other then Pettitte? Any guess's?

No clue. Based on the lawyer comment' date=' my first thought was steroids, but who knows.[/quote']

My first thought was Pettitte... How could Ensberg break a steroid story?

JETER TAKES BATTING PRACTICE

Yanks will offer him $12 million, which is a 500K raise from last yr. That seems reasonable for a guy who couldnt finish the season. Regardless, Heyman seems to have all the info this yr and it sounds like he is expecting Pettitte to be here on opening day. If that is so, then we have pulled about a nose ahead of the sox IMO, especially after the Soriano signing.

Err, what? Heymann has been wrong all year. He's made premature reports because he has wanted to be the first to report things, and half the time he hasn't done his research first. ie, A-gon, Cliff Lee.

Pettitte isn't going to come out and throw to a 3.30 ERA clip again. That was a complete aberration. Prior to that, he didn't have an ERA under 4 since 2005, and that was with the Astros. I'm not sure how this makes the Yankees better than the Red Sox, especially when he's not going to throw more than 150 innings.

Figured this would be a better place to talk about the prospect rankings that have been coming out recently. Obviously it's nice to see people think so highly of Montero's bat (to have him as the fourth best overall prospect with no positional value is something), but what was really interesting was Banuelos. Law had him as the fourth best best pitching prospect, ahead of Drabek and Hellickson.

Haha while I was working with the RockCats over the summer, I was a few rows away from Brackman, Betances, and Banuelos in the stands. I ended up getting their autographs and sending them to a Yankee fan friend of mine. If I were a Yankee fan I'd probably have been excited. Oh well, at least I got Casey Kelly's autograph before the trade.

That's the highest you'll see him in any rank.

Mlb.com had Montero at 9th which is BS.

Agreed, he was too kind to Banuelos. As for Montero, Jonathan Mayo probably had him too low, but there has to be a deduction for no positional value. It's what separates him from Trout and Harper, and then after that is a matter of opinion.

That's cool. They sit in the stands with radar guns and scouting reports, right?

He's the best pure hitter on that list. Others will say Trout. But he anhilitated AAA pitching at age 20.

Pretty much, usually it's only pitchers on days they aren't pitching (unless a position player is injured). They have radar guns and do various scouting, things such as makeup, pitching mechanics (tipping pitches), pitch locations, movement, velocity, hit locations etc, basically a lot of things that the scouts in the stands do, and a lot of things that overlap with my work as the stat-tracker/scorekeeper. I think that I have most of the Rockcats autographs by now, at least the pitching staff (including top prospects SP Kyle Gibson and OF Ben Revere) Gibson is one of the nicest guys I've met.

No doubt Banuelos is an impressive young southpaw, but ask yourself this: is he better right now than Hellickson? Hellickson is MLB-ready as of this moment and frankly was last year as well. The same probably cannot be said for Banuelos. So why is he ranked higher? The upside is there, and he's a lefty, but he hasn't proven himself beyond High-A ball yet.

I would rather have a guy with one year of potential roadblocks to become an ace over a guy with several years of potential roadblocks. Hellickson is the real deal. Prospects are prospects.

Hellickson threw 36IP in the bigs last yr. A cup of coffee if you will. He looked great, I will tell you that, but if you are now gonna rank players based on how close they are to the majors, then you arent ranking them as all around prospects. These ranking systems are meant to rank players as you see them over the next 5-10 yrs, not over the next 18 months or so. Plus, Hellickson is 4 yrs older than ManBan. Meaning Manny could take until 2014 to make his big league debut and still be the same age as Hellickson was when he made his debut. Kinda crazy, especially when considering Manny was 19 for a full season (still is 19 actually) cutting through Tampa and Trenton like it was nothing. Now obviously, injury and ineffectiveness are roadblocks, but Manny has what it takes to be a front line starter and has a more rounded prospective arsenal than Hellickson. He throws harder, he's younger, and he's left handed. At the same time, these prospect rankings are all moot anyway. The fact that they are both ranked highly should mean good things for them in the future

Yankees traded for Maxwell, absolutely love the move. I know it won't be a huge impact but Maxwell still has a nice ceiling and could be a very nice fourth OF option. Has a ton of speed too!
