Josh Tomlin to start Tuesday for Guardians vs. Yankees' CC Sabathia

Dennis Manoloff, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Right-handerJosh Tomlin will be promoted from Class AAA Columbus to start Tuesday against the Yankees, Guardians manager Manny Acta announced after Sunday's game.

The Guardians have an opening in the rotation after lefty Aaron Laffey was placed on the disabled list last Friday because of shoulder fatigue.

Tomlin and Carlos Carrasco were the leading in-house candidates. Both are in the Clippers' rotation.

"Tomlin deserves to be up here to get a shot,'' Acta said. "He's earned it.''

Tomlin, 25, a 19th-round pick by Cleveland in 2006, needs to be added to the 40-man roster. Acta did not say who will be dropped to make room.

Tomlin is 8-4 with a 2.68 ERA in 20 appearances, including 17 starts. He has allowed 83 hits in 107 1/3 innings, walked 33 and struck out 80.

On June 3, Tomlin and Class AA Akron Aeros players Beau Mills and Jerad Head were involved in an altercation inside an Akron nightclub. They were accused of assaulting Theodore Zeman III of Seven Hills and charged with felonious assault, but a Summit County grand jury recently reduced the charges to disorderly conduct.

Carrasco exited his most recent start because of a forearm cramp, but he did enough in a side session to be cleared. Acta has said the Guardians will take an extended look at Carrasco in the second half.

Carrasco is 9-4 with a 3.98 ERA in 19 starts.

Columbus lefty David Huff and righty Jeanmar Gomez would not have been ready to pitch Tuesday. Huff worked seven innings Saturday to improve to 5-0 at Columbus. Gomez started Friday.

Huff led the Tribe with 11 victories last year. He broke camp in the rotation, struggled and was sent down June 21. Gomez made a spot start July 18 against Detroit and performed superbly, giving up two unearned runs in seven innings.

There have been a bunch of bad calls in the DET/TB game as well. Looks like a bad day for baseball officiating.

When isn't it a bad day for the umpires?

That's really bad. So many bad calls' date=' unfortunately there just isn't anything that can be done about it. Oh wait...[/quote']

It's cost us at least 1 run. And the Guardians have been pretty good of late.

Third time through the order. Lets see what Javy can do...

EDIT: Not surprised by how this inning has started. I have a feeling they're see Javy's fastball really well, which explains why they're swinging at so many first pitches.

Javy has been really good today man. You gotta drop the paranoia man.

BTW, I bet Jeter gets a 12-13 mil a yr offer

His off-speed stuff has been excellent, his fastball, not so much. Lots of good swings against it.

And that was horrendous pitch selection against Choo. As good as Javy's change has been today, you can't throw three straight to Choo.

Ken Singleton is the YES network's answer to equal opportunity. Cone' date=' Flaherty, O'Neill and even Kay are worlds better[/quote']

Cone was the best, it's a shame he's no longer broadcasting games. As for O'Neill, when there's a running joke in the booth about how he knows very little about baseball, he probably shouldn't be broadcasting games.

I agree with everything you said until you mentioned Michael Kay. He's in between Buck and McCarver on my list. Michael Kay is like Curt Schilling with Down Syndrome.

I am solely talking about calling a game from a correctness perspective. Kay is annoying, pompous, douchey etc. I cannot stand him. If I had to choose between Waldman, Sterling and Kay, I'd garrotte myself and avoid the choice

That might be the best post I've ever seen you make. In all fairness, I can't stand Kay's voice and how he splooges himself whenever he yells "See Ya". I'd much rather listen to Singleton's soothing audible chocolate.

Considering he hasn't pitched since Wednesday, and with the heart of the order likely to come up in the latter half of the bottom of the 8th, I hope he's willing to go to Mo for at least four outs.
