I'm just glad that the Yankee offense is roughing up Price' date=' regardless of who wins the game.[/quote']

lol, I feel you.

I just hope we didn't overplay our cards when it comes to our rotation. It's been a great strength all season, which is why we didn't really need Cliff Lee, but with early exits by the starter in back to back games, I'm concerned about the starting pitching depth we have. I mean really, does anybody want to see Dustin Mosely, Sergio Mitre, Gaudin, or Ivan Nova (well I actually wouldn't mind seeing Nova again, but you get the point...)? I hope we can add some depth as we approach the deadline, in the form of the Ted Lilly type pitchers. I know it's nothing to get frantic over so soon, but these things just raise an eyebrow. We don't have the bullpen to have a less than stellar rotation, which we've had anyways up to this point.

This really was a great win for the Yankees. Winning a game in which your starter only records seven outs, and when your offense is facing David Price is very impressive.

Unfortunately Pettitte's injury puts a real damper on things.

it probably won't make much of a difference who else he uses as the set up guy. robertson (5.01 era, 1.67 whip) park (5.90 era, 1.41 whip) gaudin (6.52 era, 1.58 whip) and mosley (7.50, 1.50 whip) aren't any better

the yankees need to make a trade

Robertson's numbers are a bit misleading. On May 13th, Robertson's ERA was over 13. Since then, his ERA is around 2. But Park, Gaudin and Joba are all in the same boat. To be honest with you, Mitre was pretty good as a reliever prior to getting hurt. Our relievers really havent had a good run of health this yr. Aceves, the guy I think is the glue in the yankee pen, hasnt pitched in 3 months.

If Alex hadn't been momentarily fooled by the breaking ball, that would have certainly been a home run. Now a big AB for Posada.

EDIT: Should have been so much more.

Two pitches is no longer cutting it for Phil Hughes. Shocking.

I know he's been good this year (for the most part), but I'm concerned that he's going to end up back in the bullpen if his changeup doesn't progress.

He has a great 4 seamer. The problem is, he fell in love with his cutter. He needs to learn that the cutter is a great weapon for lefties, but a bad idea for righties as it breaks right down the heart of the plate.

A really good four seamer, a plus curveball, a cutter that has been hit hard this year by lefties and righties, and a subpar changeup (all with average location) is not going to be enough to sustain success as a starting pitcher in this league.

Maybe it wouldn't have been worth Montero, but the thought that Cliff Lee would have been overkill for this team is ridiculous.

Getting Lee would have been awesome, but at the same time, Hughes in the pen doesnt help his progression at all. He needs to work on the change, and he doesnt need it in short stints.

Regardless, he has nothing tonight

Hughes wouldn't have been moved to the bullpen, in all likelihood Vazquez would have been dealt.

I admit, it would be bad for Hughes' progression if he was placed in the bullpen. I wasn't advocating for him to be placed in the bullpen. My point is that if he doesn't become more than a two pitch pitcher, he's going to wind up in the bullpen in due time.

I agree that he needs to develop that change. He had a slider last yr that he seemed to scrap for some reason. I thought the cutter to slider to curve movement was a big reason for his success last yr. Cause they could get a breaking ball at 90, 85 or 80 with a different plane.

BTW, tie game, but Hughes actually put that ball in a good spot

What concerns me is that Phil doesn't have bad stuff tonight. This is who he is. Fastball 92-94, without the ability to consistently hit the corners. Good curve that isn't going to get a ton of swing and misses. And not much else.

The league has caught up to Phil Hughes, and, in my opinion, the only solution is for his changeup to improve (which isn't happening anytime soon).

His location sucks tonight y228. He is missing his corners with his fastball causing him to leave them over the plate. This is Phil Hughes stuff wise' date=' but the location blows.[/quote']

This has been Phil Hughes' location all year. The difference is that he was getting away with it for awhile, because his fastball was so good. Now teams are prepared for it, and Phil doesn't have a large enough repertoire to compensate.

EDIT: But this is a pointless argument, because neither of us can prove our point.

I swear I recall Jacko saying they should acquire another starter like Lee and put Hughes back in the 'pen since it would work better than Vazquez to the 'pen or/ the continued sucktitude of Joba as an unreliable bridge to Mo.

for this yr, getting Lee and moving Hughes to the pen would have been beneficial to the club. But for Hughes to be a top notch starter, it would hurt him

This game is a total suck fest for the Yankees. Hughes had no location and the Yanks cannot hit this shitballer. Oh well, try again tomorrow

Thank God! Girardi says he will re-evaluate the setup role and Joba is likely out! Good' date=' SEND HIM DOWN, [u']let him get right for the playoffs[/u]. We need him.

Where's the guarantee though that he'd get right for the playoffs... since there is, practically none.

There isnt a guarantee. But I think that he looks lost out there. It isnt a question of stuff. He still sits 95 with a dynamite slider. His problem seems to be testicular fortitude and location. He looks like a child out there
