As expected the Yanks non-tendered Wang. Hopefully they can still bring him back.

Also, the Yankees are interested in 30 year old free agent Japanese reliever Ryota Igarashi of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. He has a live arm (co-holder of the NPB record for fastest pitch in a game, and sole holder of fastest average pitch speed throughout a season. He has control issues though and is prone to the wild pitch. He also missed the entire 2007 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. For the right price he might be worth a look, but I wouldn't go into the season counting on him to be a big part of our bullpen.

Brian Cashman was just on WFAN and he continues to stand by the statement that their 2010 payroll is going to be less than their 2009 payroll. If this is indeed the case' date=' they don't seem to have a lot of flexibility, and you can already eliminate the possibility of any big name acquisitions.[/quote']

Im not counting the yankees out until all the big names on the FA market have been signed. Last year Cashman kept denying interest in Tex... well we know how that turned out

They could trade for Halladay or sign Holliday and it still could be less. Halladay would make their payroll what 206? it was 207 last year, which is a downgrade. They did that last year from 209 to 207. In signing Holliday they could pull a CC and give him a large bonus and pay him only 10 or 12 million this year which would put them under the 207 number as well.

The actual cost per any given year may matter to accountants, but in a discussion of baseball salaries, AAV is the figure that matters, as it is the number used for the judgment of luxury tax threshold violations.

In other minor news, 2003 first round bust Eric Duncan has signed a minor league deal with Atlanta, and Cody Ransom has signed one with the Phillies.

Per rotoworld, the Yankees are looking into signing Ben Sheets or Justin Duchsherer. If we signed Sheets, it would be with the intention that he has a SP role locked up. If we signed Duchsherer, it would be an overall depth role since he is a pen or a rotation arm depending on his health. I have said all along that you need 3 reliable arms in your rotation. We have them, getting Sheets or Duchsherer are fine options to throw against the wall and see what sticks. I'd much rather have Sheets though

I disagree. I would much rather have Duscherer. The fact that he fits well in both the rotation and pen is a plus, not to mention that the money Sheets is looking for coming off a year where he didn't throw a single pitch is a little ridiculous. I wouldn't mind Sheets, but Duscherer would be cheaper and more flexible, IMO.

I'll take Sheets. Justin is good, but he doesn't have the stuff Sheets does.

Bad day in Yankeeland. Lackey goes to the Red Sox, Halladay gets away. Mariners become super-dangerous with Felix and Lee. Matsui looks like he's heading to the Angels.

The path to the World Series may go through the Bronx, but it's full of f***ing potholes.

It's not as bad a day as you're making it out to be. I expected the Red Sox to make a big free agency splash. This doesn't surprise me. Now, we'll see what they do after this (Holliday, Gonzalez).

Also, Halladay is now out of the division, and not on the Red Sox (which would have scared me).

I think this closes the door on Bay/Holliday for the Sox.

The Angels HAVE to get one now, considering how they lost Lackey AND Figgins. Bad day for Boras. The Sox are out of the running for Holliday now, I think, and the Yankees were never in it. If the Angels sign Bay, he has no market.

I don't think the Red Sox are done, and I think there's a good chance they acquire Holliday or Gonzalez. I hope you're right though.

There is an interesting possibility that if the Yankees can't reach a deal for Damon, and the price on Holliday comes down a bit, that the Yankees could snag him. I would really like that, although, Gom, I know you wouldn't.

I was really hoping we'd get Lackey, but the Yankees may go with CC, AJ, Andy, Hughes, Joba...and I'd like to see them bring back Wang and go with Sheets as well. This way, the Yankees would have some serious depth to fall back on, as well as potentially the best pen in baseball.

I wonder if the Yankees would pursue Hanley Ramirez. He could shift to left field [he's really not much of a shortstop] and the Yankees could use some of their depth [Joba/Hughes] and minor league talent [Montero] to land him.

I have to admit, this strike, counter-strike going on between the Yankees and Sox sure is compelling.

It's an interesting idea, but one that I wouldn't hold my breath for. I think the Yankees, in the end, will re-sign Damon and bring in some rotation depth like you talked about.

Why shouldn't the Yanks go after Holliday? They have a vacancy in LF and why sign Damon when they could upgrade with Holliday? Bay is going to the Mets or Seattle and I know St. Louis is going balls to the wall to bring back Holliday, but the Yanks could easily up the ante for any offer the Cardinals offer. I don't think the Sox are done dealing yet, but the Yanks can get Holliday and re-affirm their dominance atop the AL.

Because they don't want that big-money commitment for the next 5-6 years to a guy who's defensive skill is average at best, and who may or may not have trouble hitting the inside fastball ;)

I can't say I blame them I would stay away from Holliday.

I am telling you right now Gom' date=' Montero is going nowhere. He's gonna be playing a lot of DH come the end of 2010 should he stay healthy. He is a very special bat.[/quote']

He's Miguel Cabrera 2, right?

That he is. As special a bat as they come

Agreed, I can't wait to see him play. Dude has an ubber bat, but its to bad he can't really field. Some scouts are recently turning on that though.

I have a feeling we are keeping things flexible for a run at the motherlode of FAs after 2010. Pujols, Jeter, Cliff Lee, Mauer etc are due for FA. We are gonna need to be flexible to re-up one and bring some others into the fold

If the Yanks sign a big OF like Holliday this season to go along with Granderson, I guess there would be room for Jeter in LF. I don't see there being a spot for Pujols. He will not sign on to be a DH.

pretty sure the yankees stated they werent interested in holliday or bay. jeters gonna stay right there. why do people talk about moving his position anyway though, he did just win a gold glove at short : /

With very little contact between the Yankees and the free-agent left fielder, Damon is ready to explore other options.

“I am going to start looking around. Teams are getting better and there are teams interested,” Damon told The Post yesterday. “I can’t wait forever and I am sure [the Yankees] are trying to figure things out. I have to be ready.”
