  1. Take a wild guess.
  2. http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/mlb/columns/story?columnist=edes_gordon&id=4976286 This may explain why Pedroia saw a drops in his offensive production last year, and produced below his career averages at age 25. It will be interesting to see if he bounces back like Drew did in 2008 after dealing with family issues.
  3. 10 reasons why BMI is bull. Even the person who invented it admitted that it had nothing to do with fat content and it was designed for people with sedentary lifestyles (which baseball players don't have). http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106268439&sc=fb&cc=fp
  4. BMI only measures weight compared to height. It's as related to fat as wins are related to pitching ability.
  5. There will be one very disappointed Talk Sox poster tonight.
  6. I had the same impression. He's poised and mature and has decent enough secondary pitches, but he's not a lights out pitcher, at least yet. He's going to have to add some velocity to his fastball and get more movement on his curveball. Three of us watched him pitch and none of him noticed him throwing it, but he apparently was throwing it.
  7. Wow, not bad for a guy with no power. He didn't hit any home runs his last year in Cuba.
  8. I wasn't being sarcastic. If Tito said he threw a curveball, I'm sure he threw a curveball. I was just going to scouting reports which say he curveball is 76-78 mph because I was watching it on crappy MLB.tv quality and I'd never seen him pitch before.
  9. Oh, OK. He threw a pitch on 3-2 that was clocked at 84 but it came off the bat of the hitter on a check swing. The radar must have tracked the speed of the pitch off the bat rather than out of Kelly's hand. :dunno: It was to the second batter he faced if anyone cares to take a look at it. He made the good play on the ball hit up the middle on the next pitch to retire the batter.
  10. No wonder no one noticed his curve, he didn't throw it at all. I just saw the video, he was strictly fastball, changeup today. He does have a lot of downward movement on his fastball, I could see why it's a good pitch even though he only throws it 91-93. And he has a lot of downward movement on his change, it almost looks like a slider it has so much bite to it. He wasn't blowing anyone away. But he was getting weak swings at balls down in the zone. I'd say he could be a decent #2 or #3 starter and if he adds some velocity to his fastball he could be a #1.
  11. I wouldn't put much stock in any study based on BMI. I think this trend is due more to players putting on bulk because of better exercise training, better fitness knowledge and better performance enhancing drugs than it does players being "fat". BMI makes no distinction between weight from muscle and weight from fat. If you're muscular it says you're overweight and if you're really muscular it says you're obese.
  12. I understand that they'd each gain a sandwich pick. But I doubt a team would be willing to give up their higher first round draft pick to gain a sandwich pick. Plus, whose to say that when the teams agree to "trade" players via free agency, that one of the players won't decide to sign a contract with a third team?
  13. How did his curve look? That's supposedly his best pitch.
  14. Did you see Casey Kelly pitch at all? I was working but I'm looking forward to seeing if it'll be up on MLB.tv tomorrow.
  15. It doesn't make sense for teams to do that because when a team gains a draft pick by offering arbitration to a Type A free agent, they then lose a draft pick by signing a Type A free agent. And when a team loses a Type A free agent, they get the top draft pick from the team that signed him (assuming it's not protected). So one of the teams would be getting a bum deal because they'd be giving away their higher spot in the draft to the other team.
  16. Since that thread pretty much died out after turning into a Beckett vs. Lee pissing contest, I thought this might warrant it's own thread.
  17. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2010/03/optimism_on_bec.html If we can get some protection against his shoulder in the contract, I'm all for it. I suggested that the Sox should work in a shoulder clause to any perspective deal when we discussed the merits of signing Beckett vs. Lee.
