Its kinda funny how Damon is negotiating through the press again. He doesnt want to take a pay cut even in this economy and he thinks he's getting 3 yrs? I absolutely pass on that if I was Cashman. Hell, if I was Cashman, I might dip into the well again and start looking for other 1 yr deals or a trade partner like Colorado for Hawpe.

As long as we got a peak at the medicals, I wouldnt be too upset with Guerrero on a 1 yr deal. If he had his knees fixed, he could possibly be a DH for us, and his upside as a hitter far surpasses anything Damon brings to the table.

This is not a good idea. The whole idea of letting Matsui go was so that they don't have a permanent DH, because they feel that they need to give guys like A-Rod and Posada time at DH.

So after letting Matsui walk, when they could have signed him for only seven million dollars, you want them to go out and get a worse player at the same position? Explain to me how that makes sense.

I made a typo. I was wondering if Vlad could be a Johnny Damon comp, a guy who can play enough OF to not be the full time DH, but someone who will split time at the DH spot as well to rest the balky legs.

Still, if the Yankees were willing to sign someone that has primarily been a DH, but has an outside chance to play some games in the outfield, they would have been better off going with Matsui.

SO as it stands right now...

1. Jeter SS

2. Granderson CF

3. Teixeira 1B

4. Rodriguez 3B

5. Posada C

6. Swisher RF

7. Cano 2B

8. Cabrera/Gardner LF

9. Miranda DH

The top 7 are kickass. The 8 hole would be dicey and the 9 hole could be awesome or abysmal.

Now that would be some lineup. Where would they all fit? I would guess that Johnson would slot into the #2 hole in the order...

1. Jeter SS

2. Johnson DH

3. Teixeira 1B

4. Rodriguez 3B

5. Posada C

6. Granderson CF

7. Swisher RF

8. Cano 2B

9. Cabrera/Gardner LF

Thats a dynamite lineup. Make it happen.

I would be very pleased if they brought back Nick Johnson. I always liked him when he was here and he's got a good enough glove to spell Tex from time to time.

Anxiously waiting for the Granderson press conference to get underway. I'm curious what number he takes. He wants 28 but prior to the trade Girardi said he was gonna use it. I know it's a longshot but I'm kinda hoping he takes 82. Also, hopefully whatever number he gets is just temporary and he can switch to 28 next season ;)

Not if Adrian Gonzalez, John Lackey, and Mike Cameron have anything to say about it :harhar:

True enough, but that rotation: Gotta love it. Even if we do just end up with another Adrian (Beltre), it's still a helluva good lineup in my view. Anyways, I won't hijack this topic.

14=1/2 of 28. I iz smart.

I gotta admit the Sox have a helluva rotation, and the offense is always top-notch. I still give the Yankee offense a little bit of an edge though.

You really think the Sox have a chance of adding Miguel Cabrera?

You really think they don't? And if not, why?

Where is this coming from? Did you and riverside just pull it out of your asses? There's been no indication that the Tigers are seriously looking to trade him and no indication from any New England outlets that the Sox are in pursuit of him. Hearing this discussion makes me think of MVP baseball or something. You wouldn't be content with AGon?

I'm not questioning the Sox's ability to put together a viable package for Cabrera, but I am questioning the likelihood that something like this would happen. It's almost ridiculous. What do you say they do next, trade for Lincecum?

The bolded part answers your own question. With the franchise's current economic state, a package enticing enough might get them to bite on an offer for Cabrera.

As for the dismissive and confrontational nature of your post, i would suggest to sticking to explaining the logic behind your statements, and acting like a grown up, which you claim to be.

Final thought on the subject.

No one pulled anything out of their asses here.

While there have been no concrete reports of such a trade being in the works, the Boston media has been discussing it for several weeks. All of it being speculation, of course.

It is the Hot Stove Season, isn't it?

The Sox certainly have the resources to make such a move. I'm not so sure they want a boozing tub of goo, even if he is a prodigious offensive talent.

Agreed with Spudboy. There is speculation, and the Sox could definitely put together something that would interest the Tigers, especially considering they've been interested in sort of rebuilding, and cutting some money out from all of those bad contracts.

Yankees Continue Talks With Nick Johnson

By Tim Dierkes [December 17 at 9:00am CST]

We've known of the Yankees' interest in Nick Johnson since at least December 7th, when ESPN's Jayson Stark put them among seven teams to inquire. Today, George King of the New York Post has a little more detail on the Yankees' interest.

King says the sides are discussing a one-year deal, which is important to note since Johnson was said to be seeking two years. Said Johnson's agent Rex Gary of the talks:

"We have had dialogue, things are moving forward. Something could happen to speed things up, but it’s hard to predict."

Given Mark Teixeira's presence, Johnson would spend most of his time at DH. King suggests a Johnson signing might eliminate the chances of Johnny Damon returning. Johnson would be coming home if he signed with the Yankees - he was drafted by them in '96 but traded to the Expos in '03 with Randy Choate and Juan Rivera for Javier Vazquez. Interestingly, all four players involved in that six-year-old deal were productive in 2009.

Johnson, whose .426 OBP this year leads all free agents, is also known to have interest from at least the Mariners, Giants, and Red Sox.

Its interesting that things progressed along these lines. Cashman comes out and says that we are not in the running for Matsui since he's a full time DH then we go out and pursue a guy who really can only play DH, relieve Tex in a pinch, and be an emergency LFer. Now I loved Matsui, but with Tex, ARod, Posada, Swisher, Granderson, and Cano, we have plenty of hitters capable of hitting 20+ homers on a consistent basis. Then you have guys who hit double digits in Melky and Jeter. Now, I am not saying Johnson couldnt do that in this ballpark, but he brings a different dimension to this entirely.

A guy who, for his career, has a .402OBP, really ups the ante offensively. If we put him in the 2 hole, we are talking about a guy who will make contact pretty frequently and will walk a ton right in front of Tex and ARod. The other good thing is that, although he is a pretty big guy, he isnt a complete waste on the basepaths. He's below average, but he isnt Molina or Teixeira slow. Putting those two guys at the top of the order and moving Granderson to a power hitters slot in the lineup (6 hole) would be absolutely deadly. Man. I love that lineup

Dipre, Spudboy, and Emmz;

I wasn't looking to be confrontational or anything, I was just shocked to hear of such a thing without any real speculation outside of Boston behind it. I honestly hadn't heard ANYTHING regarding Cabrera to the Sox at all outside of general discussion among fans about the (remote) possibility of acquiring a player. Yankee fans for years talked about the possibility of acquiring the likes of Vladimir Guerrero or Jose Vidro or even Ken Griffey Jr; doesn't mean there was anything behind it or that it should be looked at as a substantial claim or rumor, just talk among fans (more of a "what if" type conversation). That's what I imagine the case here with Cabrera is. My shock and the nature of my response was based on disbelief that anyone though there were any legs to this. I'm sure, barring the acquisition of AGon, that if the Tigers made Cabrera available that the Red Sox would be in on it and could probably offer a decent package, but hearing people talk about it as if it were imminent or even being discussed among the GM's just seemed a little out there for me, that's all. Like I said, I follow the hot stove as religiously closely as anyone and I haven't heard much on this subject at all (other than "what if" type dialogue among fans and local reporters). I wouldn't hold my breath on Miguel Cabrera if I were a Sox fan, Adrian Gonzalez is a much more realistic possibility. Not to mention that discussions are ongoing. But anyway........save this for the Sox threads. Back to Yankee stuff.

I 100% agree with everything you said. The prospect of adding Nick Johnson is quite enticing for all of those reasons. His ability to get on base, spell Teixeira without a huge dropoff in defense, and the decreased cost as opposed to a Matsui or Damon looks perfect to me all around. With Damon and Boras trying to play hardball, as expected, I think I'm more in favor of bringing back Nick Johnson than I am resigning Damon. The guys was in the organization for a long time as a highly touted prospect and didn't do badly in his time in the bigs with us from 2001-2003 (he wasn't Lou Gehrig or anything but he surely held his own while playing solid D as well).

Just the thoughts of how this lineup will do next year have me itching for Spring Training more than ever.

This is of absolutely no relevance to anything we've talked about, but I came across this picture and HAD to share it. This is Kei Igawa at the Koshien Bowl, an annual Japanese college football game held at legendary Koshien Stadium, home of Igawa's old team the Hanshin Tigers, and the prestigious high school baseball tournaments.
