I still have no clue why the f*** they'd be interested in Beltre. What it is about his career .325 OBP and .779 OPS at a power position appeals to them?

Safeco and Dodger over Fenway + GG defense at the position.

Works for me. Be a nice way to supplement some of the power loss on the RH side with Bay leaving and Hermida slotted to be in LF at the moment.

Ellsbury

Pedroia

V-Mart

Youk

Drew

Beltre

Ortiz

Hermida

Scutaro

(subject to reshuffling of course)

It's not the best lineup in the league. But it should be good enough if the rotation manages to pitch efficiently for the most part.

Getting a full season V-Mart as catcher is also a considerable boost. With him hitting behind Ellsbury and Pedroia, full season in Fenway Park, good posibility he will get to 100 RBIs again

While I like Beltre, we'd have to think about what to do with Lowell, and how much we're going to pay for Beltre. I believe that he'd be better than Lowell, overall around the same offensively, maybe a little worse but he'd be a lot better defensively, to the point where it's well worth any possible handicap offensively. Our pitchers will really appreciate that. Anyway, Boras was looking for $11/$12 million per year, which I doubt the Red Sox do. If we could get him for 2/$18 with a club option I'd be happy. I also don't want to sign a long term deal with him.

EDIT: The Red Sox are shopping Mike Lowell, so they can officially clear space for Beltre

Hearing Red Sox have 2 or 3 teams they could trade Mike Lowell to right now if they take "similar" contract back

Per Jayson Stark

So a team needing a 3B and has a contract close to the value of Lowell's? I wonder who could be his suitors?

Is Magglio for Lowell insane? It would shave another 6M off Detroits payroll I believe. Just throwing it out there.

I really wouldn't want Ordonez here by himself, I'd would really only want to take him if he was a thrown in for a Cabrera deal that helped us get him.

From Buster Olney: If Red Sox wanted to pursue deal of Mike Lowell, who is owed $12 million, for Milton Bradley that is something the Cubs would be open to. It's unlikely to happen.

Yeah he seems perfect for Boston. Carl Everett reborn.

Olney on ESPNews: One of the other teams involved in the Mike Lowell trade talks is the Giants. He mentioned Aaron Rowand as the return.

Rowand is making $ 13.6 million/year through 2012. I think I'd actually rather have Milton Bradley who is cheaper, and is only signed through 2011. On the other hand, I don't have to deal with him.

I actually discussed those numbers with Doiji a couple pages back here, or on the Sox offseason thread.

A Beltre signing would make the Scutaro one much more palatable for me.

According to the Providence Journal' date=' the Sox interviewed Brian Daubach for a possible role in their farm system.[/quote']

I'm all for that. I've always loved the guy and he has managerial skills.

Did they fill the Pawsox Manager slot yet?

Just to throw crap against the wall, how about Lowell and a two-bit prospect to the Royals for Gil Meche? They have a good 3B in Gordon, but they have a black hole at DH and could use to be rid of Meche's contract. Meche isn't the sexiest talent in the world, but he's at least a decent inning burning guy for the bottom of the rotation, so if the overall cost in talent is low, it's worth a look..

Because that gets the next two years off the Royals' budget, and if they can snag a prospect, so much the better.

Like I said, I was just throwing out an idea.

Posted

The only way the Royals are trading Meche is if it saves them money and that trade actually costs them money.

EDIT: Nevermind. It saves them money in the long run. Still, I think they should probably be able to get more for Meche.

Are we even at the winter meetings right now? I mean seriously what are we doing? The Yankees are lining up Halladay now after getting Granderson and we are lining up Beltre. Theo has to do better than that. I understands he loves our minors but you have to give something to get something and AGonz makes the most sense for us right now

So trying to get a 3B who can actually play defense is a bad thing?

News to me.

Just to throw crap...

Like I said, I was just throwing out an idea.

Per your words, your idea is crap.

You're finally seeing things the way most of us do. Well done.

This is one of those times where you're just like: You said it, not me.

Theo needs to do this. Send Lowell on his way and ink Beltre.

Agreed.

I think he'd have a stellar year away from SAFECO, and at Fenway to boot.

Not to mention he's a huge upgrade over Lowell.

According to Gom, it's impossible to trade Lowell.

There's your problem right there.

Max Ramirez? That's interesting. I wanted him back when all the 'TEXAS HAS TOO MANY CATCHERS LET'S TRADE FOR SALTY OR TEAGARDEN' discussion was in progress.

These are a great couple of moves if the Sox can pull them off.
