I just read a "Rumor" on another board that the Cards are in hot pursuit of Brad Penny!

Oh joy. There is justice in the world.

I heard that the Cards were really close on Penny. Just a matter of formalities at this point.

They came to an agreement per Buster Olney. One year, $7.5MM deal with another $1.5MM in incentives. Physical scheduled for Wednesday.

Mariners begin talks of extension with Felix Hernandez.

BSN07 is about to become a very sad fella.

Like exp1 said just because they are starting talks, doesn't mean he will sign. I'm glad talks have started, all the sooner Seattle figures out if they have a shot at signing him or not. I've maintained that Felix would only be dealt if Seattle felt they could not sign him long term. These talks are one of the things I've been waiting to happen. I don't know why you think I would be discouraged by this move?

Not a bad deal. I'm sure he was looking for a multi year deal but this isn't bad. If he pitches well all season he will probably earn a 2-3 year deal next off season.

Question:

Under what logical scenario do you see Seattle starting preliminary talks so soon if they don't have a "shot" at signing him?

I'll answer with a question of my own ;) Why would they wait any longer?

Why wouldn't they have a shot at signing him?

Seattle =/= Kansas City.

Like exp1 pointed out, what if he doesn't want to be in Seattle? That would be a fairly good reason for not being able to extend him. Any deal they offer he knows he can get on the open market. It comes down to where he wants to play. That's something that should be made apparent in these discussions there going to have.

Question:

Why wouldn't he want to play in Seattle?

A) It's the organization that drafted him.

B ) They have the money to give him a big-ass contract.

C) They're an organization on the rise, that has a shot to contend as soon as next year.

I'd love to get Felix, but quite frankly, it's like sitting around waiting for Pujols.

Seriously? It's the organization that drafted him? Do you have the flu and just aren't into it today bro?

Yes they have the money, and so will about 15 other teams if he decides to make himself available.

They are a good organization, I personally have nothing against them. But it's not like there aren't any other teams that can't offer him the same chance to win, some probably even more.

Are you just BSing with me for the sake of Bsing? I don't mind conversating or anything like that, but these seem like pretty weak attempts at refuting my opinions on Felix's availability. I'm accustomed to a stronger view from you! These seem flimzy:lol:

Question:

Why are they flimsy?

Is there not a precedent for hometown discounts during the last few years?

Lester?

Pedey?

Wright?

Reyes?

Longoria?

Many others could've gone year-to-year and waited to hit paydirt on the FA market, but didn't, due to the increased security of having a contract at hand, specially for a pitcher, whose career could crumble at any moment.

Flimsy or absolutely logical? Your call.

I'm not saying he won't sign long term like the players you listed. I'm just saying he might not. Just like a lot of other players have choosen not to.

Obviously I think it is possible to sign him before he hits the FA market. Or I wouldn't be advocating for the Sox to trade for him. If I thought it impossible to sign him to an extension, I'd rather they keep the prospects and make their bid for him in 2 years.

And if Seattle feels they can't sign him for whatever reason(s), They should capitalize on his trade value now. His trade value will never be higher then it is right now, even if he wins the Cy Young next year(then he will only be under team control for 1 season).

NESN is reported they signed Fabio Castro and Eric Gagne.

I thought it was Fabio Castro and Kason Gabbard?

The Red Sox signed pitcher Fabio Castro, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Castro, 25 in January, posted a 4.01 ERA in 29 starts in the Blue Jays organization between Double and Triple A, with a 5.8 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9. He's bounced around in the Phillies, Rangers, and White Sox organizations, last pitching in the bigs in '07.

Earlier today Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe noted that the Sox re-upped Kason Gabbard, who they'd reacquired from Texas in April.

The whole point is that if they're not trying to capitalize on his enormous trade value is because they feel they have a legitimate shot at signing him. And again, why wouldn't they?

How do you know they aren't trying to capitalize on his trade value? Just because it hasn't been reported in a media outlet? The media didn't know about the Felix trade talks at the deadline until after the fact. For all we know they have already decided they can't sign him and this is all smoke and mirrors. Fact is we don't know what Seattle is doing. We just have our own opinions.

You feel Felix will remain Loyal to the Mariners.

I believe he goes to the highest bidder/traded.

And if he does sign an extension with Seattle, I will more then happily admit I was wrong ;)

I don't think he'll "remain loyal" i think the Mariners have the money and the upper hand to sign him. It's common sense.

It makes no sense. The Phils are completely set at the corners' date=' and with 30 HR bats to boot.[/quote']

Maybe they could sign him and put him at DH.

As for Hernandez, this is the tough spot for him. Does he sign now, secure his future, and take less money....or risk it and get injured, and then get basically nothing.

If I was him, I'd go with a 5 year deal. That buys out 2 years of making nothing, but 5/50 isn't bad for either side. This way he'd make pretty much market value, and the Mariners get him for two extra years.

Overall, the money is pretty much the same, it's just distrubuted evenly, and for Felix, it puts his mind at rest. Also, he'd be entering free agency at 28, dead set in the middle of entering his prime, when he can break the bank and look at 150 million plus. What do you guys think?

I hope this is sarcasm. If it isn't, allow me to inform you that there is no DH in the NL.

There isn't? How come every time I go to the stadium, I see the NL team has a DH? When did this rule change?

Any chance the Sox are interested in Edwin Jackson? Bill James has him regressing this year with his ERA going up to 4.75, but maybe if he is packaged with Miguel Cabrera.... anyway I've seen stuff on mlbtraderumors that the Leyland said the Tigers aren't in firesale mode.

I'd take a shot at Jackson. He's got a live arm...

He'd be perfect for the Mets to slot in behind Johan.

I think he would do very well there. The Mets are probably to dumb to work this out. They could go after both Granderson and Jackson. They could slide Beltran to LF, hopefully cutting the wear and tear on his body.

Not sure The Mets have the prospects thought to pull it off. Their farm is crap.

Well duh, no one else can sign him. Of course they have the upper hand

Again I am not saying Seattle is incapable of signing him long term. It's more of I see Felix wanting to pitch elsewhere. But who knows? It should be an interesting topic to keep an eye on.

Nothing more then just personal view I guess. But I haven't really claimed it to be anything else :D

Oh ok.

I thought maybe you had read something somewhere. That's fair enough though.
