i don't get it....they want to keep wakefield' date=' but would be willing to let varitek go.......after everything he's meant to the club, they're more concerned with wakefield's dignity than the captain's? I don't think wakefield will be usefull anymore......time to hang em up. Let varitek stay one more year and retire with pride ........."that's just my opinion, i could be wrong"[/quote']

Yeah you are wrong - they should not have bought back Tek last year.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Can you provide us with a more suitable option?

If you can't provide a suitable option. Then you're just running your mouth.

That hindsight.

He went 11-5 last season and won his only start against the NYY.
Over his career he has sucked against the Yankees. He is also a forfeit in post season starts. It's time to move him to the TV Booth.

Yeah, time for an 11 game winner to retire. He has had back surgery and it's up to him to make his starts to get his incentive bonuses etc. When Wake is on, he is ON.

Just admit you don't like him, like das doesn't like Tek.

They are both going to be back next season and no amount of your or anyone else's whining is going to change that. Get back on the Halladay rant why don't ya? ;)

VA, I dont think anyone is absolutely against him being on the roster. Hell, if I were a sox fan, I would want him to be in uniform. I just find it a bit concerning to sign him if the intention is for him to start for a full season. Its pretty obvious that he cannot do that at this stage of his career.

I'm hoping the back surgery will help with his longevity. A knuckerballer can have a longer career than your normal pitcher. Just hoping for the best mj because when his knuckleball is ON it's great to watch. As with anything, time will tell.

Didn't Phil Niekro pitch until he was 47 or so? Maybe wishful thinking on my part but I am a little on the optimistic side.:)

Why are you getting nasty VA? I love Timmay, but it's time to cut bait with him. Branch Rickey used to say that it was better to trade a player one year too soon than to wait 1 year too long. Wakefield is 43 years old and he looked like an old warhorse out there at the end of the season. Recovering from back surgery at 43 to pitch effectively in the majors is tough enough. Added to that, he has had a torn labrum in his shoulder that has gone unrepaired for the last 2 years. Also, his durability has been waning over the last several years. This has nothing to do with liking the player. What's up with the Halladay remark? You wouldn't like to see him in the Red Sox rotation?

I don't feel I was getting nasty and sorry if I came across that way. Wakefield will be with the Sox the next 2 years barring any unforeseen events. We have it on record out here who is unhappy with this deal so that if Wake does struggle, the unhappy can say "I told you so"

I'm hoping for the best and leaning toward optimism where Timmay is concerned.

I wouldn't mind having Halladay at all. At the trade deadline, when we didn't get him, you were very upset.....I was just recalling that. Peace bro.

The team we had in the last half of the season had no chance to compete with the Yanks. IMO Halladay would have given us a much better chance at going deep into the post season.

No you weren't.

You would have been right to be upset if the FO hadn't offered Ricciardi a package that makes what Philly gave up for Lee look like peanuts.

If you should be upset at anyone, it's Ricciardi, hell, the Blue Jays were upset with him enough to fire him in great part because he botched the Halladay trade.

Having Roy Halladay would have helped the team score runs against the Angels?

According to him, Lee or Halladay would have "shut out the Angels for sure" and we would have won at least 2 they would have pitched.

You are right. He clearly would not have helped the team at all in the second half. He probably could have won 3 games against the Yankees in the second half. Two that spring to mind were the Smoltz and Penny debacles. The Sox scored enough runs in those games to win. Change the outcome in three of those games aqnd it's a different race. Maybe we would've faced the Twins instead of the Angels.

...and the attack machine of TalkSox kicks into gear with ORS and Destroyah joining in to take cheap shots over an issue that VA trolled. I was discussing Wakefield's limited utility as a starter for 2010 and beyond, but rather than debate that point feel free to take shots at me over an issue (Halladay) that has been over since the end of July.

A bunch of maroons.

Hey i made a point and didn't attack.

I said you should re-direct your anger towards JP "Unemployment" Ricciardi.

We lost to other teams besides the Yankees. I know it sucks badly to lose to them.

Regardless, do you seriously think we would have beaten the Yankees in the ALCS?

I know. I just hate when the topic of a thread gets derailed by a trolling comment.

WIth a healthy Beckett, Halladay and Lester lined up, you don't give us a shot. You do remember that the Sox won the first 8 meetings this season... right?

Sure you did. Who the hell was talking about Halladay and the trading deadline until you brought him up. The discussion was about Wakefield. You've got to take accountability for that.

But Beckett hadn't been Beckett in months, I didn't think he would miraculously become the ace just b/c it was the post season.

Of course I remember winning the first 8 meetings with the Yankees, but they were a completely different team in the 2nd half of the season.
