tek is the guy who quietly leads by example but when you want to advise the boston fans on how to behave i think its going overboard and actually inflaming the problem

so long as the guys he plays with are with him drew will be comfortable

 

but drew is also the guy who missed games in bad times when he wasnt producing

he has to tell tito he cant go because of a strained quad and then walk by schilling and lester with his head up??

Yeah. He went straight from Valdosta to FSU, and screwed the Phils when they drafted him in 1997. He played for the Cards in '98.

I've been one to blast Drew for a lack of intensity, but I have to admit this:

 

If he was hitting .300 with 20 HRs and 85 RBI's, and exhibited the same demeanor I'd be saying good for him, he stays level-headed, not too up or down, and just does his job. So I now realize there is a double standard attached to players when they approach the game as he does.

 

In football I can't stand the end zone ******** we're subjected to and I love when a player scores and just drops the ball or flips it to the ref.

 

In basketball I get irritated by a dunk that is followed up with the staredown or some goofy, body-shaking.

 

I also don't like when a guy homers and shows up the pitcher or walks down the 1st base line, etc...I like when a guy just runs the bases, period.

 

So for now, I'm getting off Drew's back regarding his lack of visual enthusiasm, the guy just may be approaching the game the way he feels is appropriate...professionally...and without overt celebration (not that he's had all that much to celebrate on a personal level).

This is an excellent example of why Tek is captian. This is a class move. I wish the fans would be a little easier on Drew, but I also know that it's hard! He's getting paid a lot, he's having a terrible year. He seems to get a lot of AB's with two outs. Plus, all the rumors that he's nursing an injury he won't admit to because of his contract having clauses about $$$ coming off if he has certain injuries. These things make for a lot of angst during close/important games.

 

I still think that, eventually, we'll be happy that we got Drew.

In his defense, people getting on him because he's making $70M and not living up to it isn't fair. He's not the one that made the offer. All I ask is for production out of him, and he's been a disappointment there. However, when people want him to do more than what he can do simply because he's making $70M, I get annoyed. He may not be a $70M RF, but it's not his fault that he's getting paid that much. I know that if someone offered me $1M to play in the bigs I'd sure as hell take it. I'd suck tremendously. I would have no business making that amount in this profession. But if it was offered, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

As a Yankee fan, I love Tek. He's a great player. To tell you the truth, I wish Jeter would have stuck up for Arod the same way.

 

The guy deserves to be captain of any team. There are certain players I like on other teams, Tek is one of them.

the press is worse on manny after he hits 40/120/.300 than it is on drew

Yes, it is every paying fans prerogative to boo whomever they choose. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

 

I DO sometimes wonder what the motivation is?

 

Do they think it'll make him play better? Can't be that dumb.

Do they think he's not trying and this will make him put forth greater effort? Maybe.

Do they think he has no clue that he is underperforming? No, he knows he blows.

Do many fans boo because it makes them feel part of the event? Sure they do, it's "the thing to do."

 

When Drew comes up in the clutch I usually say "here comes a K on a slider out of the zone" or "here comes a DP" but I still pull for the guy. Then when he fails I say "you fkn suck"...to the TV.

 

But if I'm at a game? I'm enjoying my time there, can't be bothered booing...actually would feel like a dick if I was booing...what's the sense? He K's and I go drop another $50 on brews for me and the boys.

so we gave him a 5 year deal and a raise

fans know he makes more than ortiz schilling and lowell

we will boo drew here in boston because he is a career underachiever who makes more than all of us will in our lifetimes in 1 summer and doesnt produce.

You know I came to this forum prepared to say flat out "Don't boo the guy" but the money thing is legit. You make that kinda dough and don't produce, you're gonna hear about it. If he was a CEO making kind of money and the company was tanking, he'd hear about it. Why should he be let off the hook because he's playing baseball?

 

I spent the money it costs to go to Sox games on a regular basis I'd feel entitled to boo. However at some point I'd realize that all it was doing was stirring up negative feelings in me and had no affect on the game.

If Booing JD effects his playing ability then he is the biggest pussy in all of sports. If you invest 70 million into a player you better make sure he is tough enough to withstand being called out if he plays poorly. Hell, they booed Mike Schmidt in Philly to make him a better player. Did Bonds stop hitting homeruns when he was Booed? Somehow I don't think the booing effected those guys. Tek should just point out that Drew's number are starting to look better next to his to get the heat off of Drew.
