Toby Hall is likely to be non-tendered by the Dodgers making him a free agent. Its better to give up just cash for his services. He'd be a serviceable 1 year backup catcher for Boston

I'm still hoping for Rod Barajas.

I believe Jonathan Broxton is the prospect that they covet most from the Dodgers, as he would give them right away a possible lights out closer

EDIT: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-spw-dodgers5dec05,0,4461056.story

The Dodgers came away from the meeting with Boston asking for a steep price of 3 top prospects that included outfielder Matt Kemp & reliever Jonathan Broxton. It could be put on the back burner

Kemp, Broxton, and another top prospect is NOT too much for Manny Ramirez.

Kemp's a nice bat and at 21 hitting the major leagues has a ton of potential, but let's not forget that this dude has 154 major league at bats to his credit. I don't even want to get into all the ROY winners who flopped after winning the award because opposing pitchers figure him out. If the Sox are getting unproven players (and Broxton, Kemp, Billingsley, Loney, LaRoche, etc haven't proven a damn thing) they need quantity because the quality is unknown.

I don't buy into the Manny being a distraction thing one bit. He's done this crap for years now and the Sox just live with him. Sure, they don't like it, but they deal with it because of his bat. I'm all for the Sox trading him to get younger, more athletic, etc, but they're better off keeping him and dealing with the consequences than trading him for eighty cents on the dollar. If they settle into a "we must trade Manny for the best deal possible" attitude they'll get burned IMO.

Brad Penny's OK, but his strikeout rates and the fact that he's never pitched in a hitters park or the AL scare the crap out of me. This guy is a lesser arm than Beckett and we saw how his transistion went. IMO-- this guy gets eaten alive in the AL East.

The Dodgers have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball and have a need for a productive bat. The Red Sox need to take advantage of having the best available hitter on the market and get value in return.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Loney and LaRoche tore up AAA last year, but Las Vegas is a hitter's paradise and their numbers are inflated. They are good prospects but inevitably overrated.

Kemp, Broxton, Billingsley, and either Loney or LaRoche is what I'd ask for and if they don't accept, T.S. Take Manny back and hit him in between Ortiz and Drew.

Too many things on the back burner and nothing getting done. Manny for 3 mlb ready prospects is not steep unless you are talking about the three that the red sox want. 2 MLB ready prospects and a MLB guy would be right. You still have to remember that Manny is 35, so he shouldnt necessarily net the sox 3 prime prospects. Either way, this will get resolved at some point. As for needs, I agree.

Broxton is a must in any Dodgers deal. The guy throws absolute smoke, but bringing a kid from the sandy beaches of the southwest to Boston is a different beast altogether.

The other pieces can fall where they may. An outfielder is something they should consider, but it shouldnt be a breaking point. Kemp has a lot of swingin Wily Mo in him with is 9BB and 53K in 154AB. The one thing he brings to the table over WMP is speed.

Loney is a guy who could be on the radar, but I dont see him as a big power guy justifying 1b. He shouldnt be a sticking point. LaRoche, the same way. The guy has tons of promise, but dont hold a deal up if there is one.

The dodgers are also looking to unload the enigma, Brad Penny. Great first half, terrible second half and multiple mental meltdowns in LA of all places. He is signed for what amounts to 19 mil over the next 2 yrs.

So in all, I could see a deal of Penny, Broxton and "insert prospect here" getting done. The dodgers dont have the luxury to gift wrap 3 to the sox, but one potential closer and one bat to go along with Penny should seal the deal.

Donno if its been posted but Rosenthal reports the Sox could get a package of Brad Penny, Andy LaRoche and James Loney. Penny? Could this be because of a big roadblock in the Matsuzaka negotiations? I hope not...just speculation. I like LaRoche and Loney a lot...Loney lets us move Lowell, and LaRoche is a damn good prospect. Penny was the best pitcher in the NL in the 1st half, and he can put up something close to those numbers he'd be great to have, but I donno...

Here's a question:

What would it take to get Miguel Tejeda?

I know his defense sucks but he can still hit.

were gonna need a power hitter and he can do that for us, Team leader and always wants to win. I bet he'd work his ass of in Boston.

the orioles wont deal him to the red sox unless the sox wanted to add ellsbury or one of the 3 B's.

I love how people think they only need to give a couple of good spects to the Red Sox and they think Manny should be all their's. Manny is a once in a lifetime player, either pay up or don't receive a first ballot HOF.

but you have to admit that his hall of fame yrs are coming to a close. He is 35, how many more yrs can he do this for? Imagine a team gutting their farm for Manny and then have him decline before their eyes.

Of course at age 35 he is closer to the end at age 25, ut his bat still has plenty of life left in it. I hope the whole deal falls through and he is in Fort Myers in the Spring. Yankee fans would be very disappointed.

Well I'm glad to see Theo put a deadline on this. Make some of the teams interested in Manny sweat a little. And it's good that he wants to put this behind him so he can move onto more of the teams needs. I'm just glad it will hopefully be all over wednesday.

Question, if Manny is going to be here next season, would you hit Drew behind him or hit him in the #2 spot?

wow. I have never seen a star get shat on like this. Well, yeah I have. During the Damon negotiations. Or maybe before Nomar was dealt. How about when Mo Vaughn left or when Clemens took the money north of the border. Man, the boston media treats players like condoms. Useful during the fun times then throws it in the trash when the fun is over. The man actually said that Manny is taking a proverbial piss on all red sox fans. WOW.

here is the thing, the sox are trying to nab 3 young players, and will likely get 2 MLB ready prospects in return with a third being a ways away. Assuming that one of them lives up to billing, you still dont have ful return on investment. And when Broxton or Shields or Linebrink blows a save next yr the same day Manny hits a walkoff in Cali next yr, these same idiots will be crying for Theo's head to be put on the chopping block for not getting equal value for a future hall of famer and the best red sox player since Ted. The Boston media is like nothing else.

the boston media has been working with the boston red sox ownership group for years

the globe(ny times) has a financial stake in the sox, this is fact

they need to make it seem like manny is the problem

all this guy ever did was his job and still callahan likes to revisit the game a few years ago in philly when manny had the day off and wouldnt pinch hit??

it'll be a while before i buy another boston paper

Fact is there have been many fans in these forums who've expressed some frustration with Manny "being Manny", as they say. But the other side of it is that they realize that in today's day and age of major sports, a substantial number of star players carry baggage and it kind of goes with the territory. You take the good with the bad and look at the player's overall contribution to THE TEAM.

If you're cheering for the name on the front of the uniform, then you have to cheer for Ramirez as he is, because even as flawed as he may be in terms of occasional lack of hustle and such, he is a key piece to the team's success, and that's what we all really want, no? Team Success?

Callaghan's article is insulting to Red Sox fans, but I'm not at all surprised. Its the media spin tactic, destroy the potentially departing player in the eyes of the fans. I just hope the media's comments don't get accepted as the general thoughts of ALL Sox fans, as so often happens.

Sounds to me like this could be a primer designed to lessen the blow of Manny being dealt for less than we all think the Sox should have received.

manny wasnt nomar who just whined and cried and pouted and declined over the years

manny wasnt mo vaughn who ate himself out of the league at a young age

manny didnt leave boston for ny like damon

manny didnt leave to hit closer to his family in texas and end up in fuking ontario either

this new ownership group and gm's 1st act of business upon buying this team was waiving manny ramirez, arguably the best right handed hitter in history and the entire boston media nodded their heads in agreement claiming we just cant afford this guy...

meanwhile

reality has shown its face this year in real dollars

the idea that we're not financially sound enough to handle such a contract has been blown out of the water and the entire boston press and ownership group has now been exposed as completley full of s***

Christ, Callaghan's article is a contributor to Manny being dealt for less than we all think the Sox should have received. How does it help the hometown team for the local media to churn out bizarre articles that demean the trading commodity during the freaking negotiations? For f#%^'s sake, Callaghan, who the hell are you rooting for?

If you can't face the fact that Manny has serious issues with the way he plays the game, with ownership and now his fellow players then you are hopelessly blind. You may want to keep him despite his issues but at least recognize the obvious.
