I'm starting to think that some guy just made this up.... there's a couple reports on a few message boards, but unless someone can for sure report that ESPNEWS had this at the bottom of the screen, I don't know if I believe it yet.

I'm listening to ESPN Radio now, I'll tell you guys if I hear anything.

How. I was just watching Theo rock out on his guitar for 4 hours. How would a deal like this JUST have been made?

The report is that the deal has been made they are just waiting to announce it, why is anyones guess. Maybe they are waiting for the Yankee series to be over? Who knows?

MLB aide: Sox will get Burnett

Marlins righthander A.J. Burnett will be traded to the Red Sox within a week, an MLB official said yesterday. Boston plans to sign Burnett to an extension. Red Sox special assistant Bill Lajoie watched Burnett's outing Thursday in Philadelphia, when he allowed six runs in five innings, including second-inning homers to Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard and Mike Lieberthal. Burnett is 5-6 with a 3.64 ERA in 18 starts this season.

"There is no truth at all to any deal we are making with the Marlins," Sox GM Theo Eptein said via an E-mail.

i was just thinking since the marlins are trying to include third baseman mike lowell and baltimore would consider taking lowell t0o and transition him to first base; maybe thats what boston could try to do as well and offer ((Bronson, Millar, and Shoppach)) for AJ Burnett

did MLB say it was a done deal? I know the article for the times said a MLB aid.... is that what your referring to or is there something new?

NY Daily News is reporting that an MLB aide has said Burnett will be a member of the Red Sox within a week. If it is indeed Arroyo that we give up, it would be a tough sacrifice but it makes the rotation look a lot better

Well on espnews they said the orioles are gunna have a meeting with him and they are intrested in him because how hot and cold Ponson has been since last year.

provided Burnett does come to Boston and Schilling makes it back to the rotation, how sweet would Schilling-Clement-Burnett-Wells-Wakefield look heading into the stretch and the playoffs?

possible three way trade

RED SOX-get Burnett

MARLINS-get Sean Burroughs and Chris Hammond from Padres, Arroyo and Brandon Moss from Sox

PADRES-get Lowell from Marlins, cash and prospect from Marlins or Sox

Valerio de los Santos-reliever for marlins also could be in deal

where did you see that???

all I am seeing is Baltimore trades Bigbie, Penn, Kline, and Julio for Burnett and Lowell. As much as that trade looks like it helps the Orioles rotation....it kills there bullpen. Kline and Julio are the setup men for BJ Ryan and even though they are having rough years it gives the Orioles good matchups. I dont know if this trade makes sense for Baltimore it seems like too much which leads me to believe there is something else going on.

Gammons said at the game the Sox are not involved in the trade (although they would like to be). I've seen that before from Theo where Nomar was not available and then BAM...gone. Without question he likes to keep things silent and deny all reports until a deal is finished....i dont know what to think but I do feel the Sox need changes.....We got outpitched by the Yankees and there pitching staff is garbage.

From today:

A report in the Palm Beach Post cites a source that says a deal for Burnett is “imminent,” and that the pitcher could be dealt before his start on Tuesday. And according to the Post, the Red Sox are one of the top bidders for Burnett’s services. The Marlins would like to package third baseman Mike Lowell, having a disapointing season and making $7.5 million, with Burnett, and it is rumored that the Red Sox are Orioles are neck-and-neck in the race to grab the talented righthander. The report says any Sox deal would include pitcher Bronson Arroyo and others, and Boston would have to take on Lowell as well. The report mentions another proposal that would be a three-way deal with the Marlins, Padres, and Red Sox, where Arroyo and third baseman Sean Burroughs would wind up in Florida and Burnett and Lowell would come to Boston. The Providence Journal reported that the Marlins are looking for a starting pitcher, reliever, and left-handed hitting outfielder in a deal, and that the Sox might part with outfield prospect Brandon Moss and Arroyo to consummate a deal.

I think Sox should up the ante and also offer shoppach to the Marlins. Shoppach is a good guyas there is. If he were to stay with the sox, hed be down in triple A for two or more years. Id really like to have marlins or any team rather give him a shot at the big leagues.

I agree you could dangle Shoppach and I heard Abe Alvarez name come up. Lefty who will end up being a bullpen pitcher would possibly do well in Florida with his control. I hate the money Mike Lowell makes BUT....

He could move to 1st and although he is struggling now...his numbers show he has some power and would certainly benefit by being in Boston....not to mention he is a complete upgrade from Millar. A right handed hitter who would be placed behind Nixon in the lineup that can hit some home runs. I also hear that Lowell is a good guy and would seem like a good fit for the Sox clubhouse.

That deal with Burnett would be sweet!!...but has anyone heard about a deal for Billy Wagner? I heard that the sox were trying to make a deal for him.

this season compared to last, mike lowell has been in somewhat of a slump. he is a good guy dont get me wrong. if they do get him, and he plays third base, what will happen with youkilis? or if they do transition him to 1st base, how about millar? questions in that trade

2004, .293 avg

175 Hits, 87 Runs scored, 44 Doubles, 1 triple, 27 HRs, 85 RBIs, 64 Walks, 77 Strikeous

2005, .227 avg

68 Hits, 32 Runs scored, 25 Doubles, 4 HRs, 36 RBIs, 23 Walks, 38 Strikeouts--with on base percentage only at .280

Posted

I have no doubt they would move him to 1st. Bill Mueller is not going to play 2nd base and Youk will continue to be a backup when he is called up again. Unless the Sox can turn around and deal Lowell away...Kevin Millar would be the one to go and there are still talks with Houston about taking Millar. I was talking to some people however and check this out.....

IF this deal were to go through there is a chance the Sox would try to spin Lowell out to Philadelphia for bullpen help. Something else would be included from what I understand and the target would be Billy Wagner. If Theo Epstein is able to land AJ Burnett and Billy Wagner I would be most impressed.

wow jeez mark belllhorn will now be out for some time and could be put on the 15 day DL, which means Sox might be now in pursuit of second baseman, since alex cora couldnt really be a starter. Talks are that Dustin Pedroia could get the early callup. Though Texas Rangers are shopping around Alfonso Soriano with him being in his last season

I heard Gammons speculating along those lines. It's a sure bet that Burnett is going to the Orioles, everything else I don't know.

Well I was told by a friend who signed off after saying it. I thought it was a done deal but couldn't find any info on it so I assume for now it's just a rumor.

EDIT:

Just annonced on NESN as a rumor, so thats all it is.

sox most likely out of running for mr. burnett...

Burnett told the Palm Beach Post on Monday that he expects to be traded before his next start, which is scheduled to come Tuesday night. Multiple news sources reported Tuesday that a deal -- most likely with the Orioles -- is nearly completed. It’s still unclear whether the trade will come directly with the Orioles -- with Burnett and third baseman Mike Lowell heading to the O’s and Jorge Julio, outfielder Larry Bigbie and top pitching prospect Hayden Penn to Florida -- or if there will be a third team in the deal. The Palm Beach Post reported the Pirates might be that third team. According to one Post source, at least one Baltimore player was told to be prepared to pack his bags. The Red Sox, who had reportedly offered a package that included Bronson Arroyo, seem to be out of the running. According to a report in Tuesday’s Washington Post, the Red Sox feel they’re out of the running for Burnett. However, Sox owner John W. Henry told Bloomberg news service Monday that ''there is a very good probability that we will increase payroll before the trading deadline." Whether that means Burnett, who is in the final year of his contract, remains to be seen.
