Burnett deal is gonna fall through..Theo should jump in now because the Marlins will be so frustrated for wasting their time with the O's that they're gonna ready to take the next best deal that comes.

I think you may be. Curt has been very solid in his last few outings. I think they're going to stick with him until Foulke is back. If Foulke comes back strong then you send Schill into the rotation and bring Wade into the bullpen. If Foulke is still garbage when he gets back then you just leave Schill as the closer.

I really don't think Wags is an option anymore.

I don't know if they would put wade in the pen, with his rotator cuff it would be very difficult and painful fo rhim to pitch on consecutive days

get the burnett deal done theo!!!!

I think you are right and not only that but Theo has other teams involved along with Henry saying the team salary will be increased.....so Theo has room, he has players, he has connections......this needs to translate into us getting Burnett and a lefty reliever.....

I would rather have JC Romero than Billy Wagner....Romero's ERA is always good and its from playing in the AL. Not to mention I don't think he is a free agent after this year.

I believe we can get one or the other, but to get both I believe we'd have to morgage the future. For us to get a legit MLB LRP we're going to have to give up a starter and a top prospect. To get burnett we're going to have to give up probably 2 prospects.

I believe Theo is a one of the best GMs in the league, and I don't think he's willing to trade away the future to win another WS this year.

If Theo trades 3 more prospects and we don't win this year he'll be crucified when we need those prospects in a year or two. I'd be happy with just JC Romero, or another good bullpen arm.

yup deal hits a snag as reported by boston.com:

Burnett-to-Orioles deal hits a snag

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that a deal between the Marlins and Orioles regarding Burnett -- who pitched well for the Marlins on Tuesday -- is on hold because the teams cannot agree on who should pay the balance of third baseman Mike Lowell’s contract. The Marlins are insistent that Lowell be included in any deal with Burnett. The Orioles are hesitant on taking on the $21 million Lowell is owed through 2007, and if forced to take on Lowell’s deal, would like the Marlins to take pitcher Sidney Ponson, who has one year and $10 million left on his contract. Also, multiple sources told the Palm Beach Post the reported three-way deal between the Marlins, Orioles and Pirates -- which the Post first reported Tuesday -- never was discussed. Should talks break down between the Marlins and Orioles, expect other teams -- namely the Red Sox, White Sox, and possibly the Blue Jays.

Id be happy with a 3 team deal between the red sox, marlins, and Minnesota. that way the twins can have 3rd baseman in form of mike lowell, sox get AJ Burnett from Marlins and JC Romero from the twins--with sox offering package deal of bronson and embree to florida, and pacakage deal of alvarez and shoppach to the twins.

The Red Sox were mystified Tuesday that the Marlins haven't returned their calls to inquire about A.J. Burnett. There has been some friction between the clubs, dating to the Kevin Millar/Japan fiasco two years ago. Boston apparently was prepared to offer pitcher Bronson Arroyo and prospect

Theo is very good at moving players that are already on the team. He does include prospects but usually its already guys on the club.....

Hillenbrand, Nomar, Fossum, and so on....

I don't believe he needs to mortgage the future he just needs to be creative. Kelly Shoppach, Abe Alvarez, Brandon Moss....expendable and names such as Arroyo, Youk, Mueller, Embree have all come up so I think he has potential to be creative. If the Sox make another trade it will involve another team.

It seems the Red Sox aren’t out of the A.J. Burnett sweepstakes after all. The Orioles were thought to be very close to a deal to acquire Burnett yesterday, but that trade has hit a snag because of Baltimore’s reluctance to pick up the remaining years (two) and money ($21 million) remaining on third baseman Mike Lowell’s contract. The Marlins have been trying to unload Lowell on any team that trades for Burnett. According to the Globe's Gordon Edes, the Orioles’ reluctance has motivated the Red Sox to redouble their efforts to acquire Burnett. Florida is hoping to get a serviceable starting pitcher and a top setup man in return. The Red Sox would be willing to part with Bronson Arroyo if they could get Burnett and were attempting to involve a third team that could offer an additional piece that would satisfy the Marlins. The Sox also are leery of picking up the remaining years and money on Lowell’s contract, especially with Kevin Youkilis looming as the third baseman of the future. Lowell has struggled this season, hitting .233 with four homers and 38 RBIs. The Sox have also talked to the Twins about a deal in which third baseman Bill Mueller would go to Minnesota for lefthanded setup man J.C. Romero. That deal could be expanded to include Twins pitcher Joe Mays.

I think its more likely that the Sox could trade off Kevin Youkilis

They send down Youkilis and designate Alan Embree....

I certainly could be reading too far into this but...Bronson Arroyo, Kevin Youkilis, and Alan Embree to Florida for AJ Burnett and Mike Lowell

If that was the case then either Mike Lowell or Bill Mueller would probably be traded considering the Sox wouldn't need both with Tony G and Cora as backup infielders. One of them would probably move to Minnesota for JC Romero. I think an extra team could be involved somewhere but prospects as well...most likely (Shoppach, Moss, Alvarez)

i think we could work the twins into a three way with the marlins

MARLINS GET- Arroyo,embree,shoppach/stern, moss and a maybe a prospect from twins

TWINS GET-Lowell and cora

RED SOX GET-Burnett and Romero

(maybe ad youkilis or shoppach in there)

something like that sounds like a pretty good deal

it also might be a better deal for the marlins who were offered (julio, bigbie, penn and kline)

i also think it would kill the orioles because they were so close to getting this trade done.

lowell can also play 1B

Posted
i def hope he does, also Id like to keep stern--cuz second half last year we had the backup outfielder duos of kapler and roberts. Could be same way with stern and kapler, Kapler has the hit power, and Stern of course has the baserunning power.

the marlins want a setup guy (embree) a SP (arroyo) a propect (moss) and an other fielder who will be major league ready soon (shoppach, stern)

the twins want a 3B and 2B (lowell and cora)

it probably would be alex cora for second base to go to the twins, sox has too much of trust with bellhorn not to trade him off during the season. i do think however that if Tony G starts the games at second base till bell comes back which i think he will, and able to have good on base percentage, hits, and lil strikeouts, sox management could very likely put bellhorn as a backup for rest of the season.

Scouting report from espn.com

The unquestioned ace of the Marlins' staff before he blew out his elbow in April of 2003, A.J. Burnett made a triumphant return from reconstructive elbow surgery. He made it back a little over 13 months after the operation, and after some early spottiness became the club's second-most reliable starter after Carl Pavano. Burnett was shut down with some minor inflammation in his elbow following an 11-strikeout win over the Cubs on September 12. He might have made another start or two, but with the playoffs out of reach, caution was exercised and he made just one relief outing.

Pitching

There were times when Burnett's command deserted him, as often happens in the first year after Tommy John surgery, but for the most part he was extremely good in every way. Held to a strict pitch count early in his return, he stuck mainly to his 94-96 MPH fastball and hump-backed curve in order to conserve bullets. His fastball, which had been clocked several times at 100 MPH in 2002, returned to that level post-surgery. When he gets on a roll, Burnett stalks the mound like a panther, making hitters dance amid an array of effectively wild hard stuff. Surgery did nothing to interrupt the maturation in his thought process on the mound.

Defense & Hitting

Burnett, with two career homers, doesn't get cheated at the plate. He is a solid bunter as well. A lanky athlete, he fields his position well but needs to do a better job minding baserunners. He allowed 14 stolen bases in 19 attempts

Posted
considering also of course Tony G is not one to strike out as much, in 194 at bats, only 28 strikeouts. with bellhorn in 283 at bats, 109 strikeouts. Tony G might be known as the "utility infielder", but I think he has the ability by far to be a great starter
