i would think so but some things i read say they are running into trouble....the two problems are

1) The Twins are more interested in Kyle Lohse than Joe Mays

2) The Red Sox are nervous about Mike Lowell

Theo must see how great this deal is and I guess it was already proposed so they might still be working on it. Its just a matter of getting all teams feeling good. The Marlins would pick up two starters and the Twins would add some offense. Obviously the Red Sox would gain a proven 3B, a dominant setup lefty, and a potential ace.....wow get it done

exactly..the argument that he is old and susceptible to injury makes sense but he hasnt shown any major weaknesses as of late and I know we have to think about the long run but I cant help but think that letting him go would be a big mistake..especially with the whole lowell thing....uhhhh..

Are you serious? I know your in love with Bill Mueller..i like him too..but this deal makes soo much sense for the sox. It will make the WHOLE TEAM BETTER. Lowell will get better coming into this environment. Trust everyone thats saying it..because he will.

Mike Lowell - fielding% (.982) errors (4) assists (148)

Bill Mueller - fielding% (.978) errors (4) assists (128)

....there is nothing wrong with Mike Lowell's defense

Here was the proposed trade on Wednesday.....

The Red Sox send third baseman Bill Mueller and possibly a prospect to the Twins for lefty J.C. Romero and righty Joe Mays. The Red Sox then send Bronson Arroyo and Mays to the Marlins for Burnett and Lowell.

Now the Marlins are more interested in Lohse but the Twins don't want to give him up. The issue with the Sox is obviously Mike Lowell but I don't really have too much of a problem with him. As great a season Bill Mueller is having defensively....Mike Lowell has a higher fielding% and always has. They also have the same amount of errors and aside from the batting average....they have the same amount of runs, HR, and RBI.......

In short its not much of a downgrade if any its just the money. Mike Lowell is still not that old though and would probably benefit by playing in a more friendly ballpark.....not to mention the most important part of this deal.....we get an awesome setup lefty in JC Romero and..oh yeah AJ Burnett

MAKE THE DEAL

hate to see bill m. go but this makes much sense...def. need to make some sacrifices for that lefty.

If this deal hinges on the fact that we'd have to take on Lowell, I say do it. His contract is annoying, but from a purely baseball standpoint he's not that terrible. Ok, maybe he is this year, but switching leagues may give him the spark he needs. Look at his stats:

He averages a BA in the hihg .200s, he can hit for power, and is a 100 rbi threat. If it means:

1) Getting Burnett

2) Keeping Burnett away from the O's

then its totally worth getting Lowell.

i dont think its necessarily dumb but i do think it should be avoided unless it needs to be done..which may be the case unfortunatly.

it looks like the orioles are starting to give up on burnett. instead theyre going after jeff weaver and jason shmidt

The Marlins continue to speak with several teams, most prominently Baltimore and Boston. The Orioles are not sure they would make the deal even if the Marlins absorbed $10 million of the $21 million owed Lowell through 2007. One report in Baltimore said there might be a split in the Orioles front office about Burnett, with some high-ranking officials questioning whether he is a sure-fire No. 1 starter.

The Marlins are talking to Boston and Minnesota about a three-way deal in which the Marlins would receive pitchers Bronson Arroyo from the Red Sox and Joe Mays from Minnesota. Burnett, Lowell and reliever J.C. Romero would go to Boston and third baseman Bill Mueller and prospects would wind up with the Twins.

Baltimore has contacted the Dodgers about Jeff Weaver and the Giants about Jason Schmidt if the deal for Burnett falls through.

"We know that A.J.'s name is floating around and Mikey Lowell's name is floating around," Lenny Harris said. "It's brought our team a little closer. Everybody knows what's going on, we're just tying to keep it together and, hopefully, we'll keep these guys around."

RHP A.J. Burnett, Marlins

Contract status: Signed through '05

July 21 -- The Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox are interested in acquiring Burnett. A deal that would send Burnett to the Orioles has hit a snag because of Baltimore's reluctance to pick up the contract of third baseman Mike Lowell, according to The Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun

The Baltimore Orioles could have a new ace as soon as Friday night.

ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that talks between the Marlins and Orioles for pitcher A.J. Burnett heated up Friday afternoon.

According to a source, if the Orioles can move pitcher Sidney Ponson -- rumored to go through Texas, possibly to Tampa Bay -- Baltimore can use the money saved to make third baseman Mike Lowell's contract work.

Lowell, who is batting a disappointing .230 with just four homers and 39 RBI, is owed about $21 million through 2007.

The Marlins think a trade could happen Friday night, although it's not clear whether or not the Orioles will ask for a window to try to sign Burnett.

The 28-year-old Burnett, who can become a free agent after the season, is 6-6 with a 3.68 ERA.

The Boston Herald says:

According to sources, the Orioles, Florida Marlins and Tampa Bay Devil Rays are on the verge of consumating a deal that would bring Burnett to Baltimore along with infielder Mike Lowell and minor league outfielder Eric Reed. In return, the Marlins were to receive outfielder Larry Bigbie, starter Hayden Penn and relievers Jorge Julio and Steve Kline.

The final stage of the deal would be for the Orioles to find a home for starter Sidney Ponson in order to clear payroll to take on Lowell's salary.

Sources said Baltimore wanted to send Ponson to Florida, who in turn would ship him to the Devil Rays in exchange for one of three relievers - Trever Miller, Travis Harper or Lance Carter.

As for the Orioles, the addition of Burnett will give them a powerful arm to help combat the Red Sox and New York Yankees in the AL East. Baltimore is expected to employ Lowell as a first baseman and DH on a club that already features one of the most explosive lineups in the AL.

.... So, sounds like a good deal for the O's. They get Burnett, a reliever and don't lose much if any offense. The D-Rays actually improve (I think  ) with Ponson. And the Marlins get some offense that they desperately needed along with pitching. It's odd when a 3 way trade actually looks like it's helping all three teams.

the boston herald says the orioles and marlins have completed the trade. the globe says the orioles arnt close and the red sox are still very much alive to get burnett and romero.
