    It's not really about specifically Bichette and/or Bregman. Most of the very extravagant wish lists wouldn't have worked out. Almost none of the regular outside targets would've made a material difference. We are where we because our internal guys have greatly under-performed.

    A lot of these suggestions are lottery tickets. Career minor leaguers rarely figure things out. Guys like Arias have a path already designed. They don't get promoted unless there is a long-term injury, and usually not even then.

    All these things ignore the problem with the team. The problem is that the guys that we came into the off-season with, are greatly under-performing. There is almost no combinations of off-season moves that would've made a material difference. Imagine on of the most popular ideas: sign Bregman and trade for Marte. Imagine we added Bregman *.668) and Marte (.664). The cost for that would likely have been Mayer + Early, plus the ~$48M, $26M of which we spent on Suarez. As of today, that would be a disaster, without considering the long-term payroll liabilities. Or acquiring Alonso instead of Contreras. Or adding Paredes or Eugenio Suarez.

    I agree. Maybe moving him back to 3-4-5, and telling him to swing for the fences might change his approach, Yoshida, imo, should bat 2nd every game, until someone around him starts hitting. Seattle is #29 in OPS in the 2-hole with a .582 OPS, We aren't even remotely close to them with our .443.Lock in Yoshida at the #2 and then try to resolve the lead-off slot.

    Best 2B/SS available was Bichette (.536). Best 3B available was Bregman (.668)

    I keep reiterating that point. The problem is not our acquisitions. The problem is: Narvaez .549 Story .531 Duran .490 Anthony .686 Crochet 7.88 Bello 6.75 We'd need two more Babe Ruth's and another Pedro to make up for that loss of production.

    I think that is pure conjecture on your part.

    It's all part of the same formula. Run differential rules. I don't think anyone challenges that any more. Whether one gets to that difference between scoring, pitching or defense, makes almost no difference.

    Bregman figured to be a pretty big bat. And I'd make a decent sized wager that Ranger+Durbin out-performs Bregman.

    It's early imo. You seldom have any sure things, but Duran has a 121/132/116 OPS+ over the past three years. That's pretty consistent.

    I'm not sure that even substituting schwarber's .882 OPS for Yoshida's .889 OPS is that much of an improvement. Especially if it came at the price of not signing Suarez.

    1-How did thy drop the ball on not signing him? You have to put a number on a player and be willing to walk away. 2-And while I did not agree on Bregman, I don't see how making him #1 on their list constitutes a failure. Someone has to be #1 on your list.

    Sure. If we had Paredes -0.1 bWAR instead of Durbin's 0.0, then we'd be much better off, assuming one believes that a worse bWAR is better than a better bWAR. Not to mention Paredes would've cost us Abreu, our best player. Some of the takes in here are embarrassing.

    I wouldn't do that over a longer period, or I'd lose my accounting card. But when the sample starts off very, very small, it sometimes makes sense to make the sample even smaller. Relative to the talent base, I am more comfortable with Durbin reaching his projections than I am with Anthony.

    At 24, it became easier to indulge my worser instincts. At 18, I was working at a beer distributor. I didn't make any real money, but the environment was surprisingly a lot healthier than when I started working in an office.
