  1. Of course. This is what every team in BB does. You develop a farm, and then you play your prospects. And we only have one rookie SP. There is no alternative.
  2. I'm curious how one determines when players are ready and when they are not. My general rule is that, on any date on the calendar, 50% of the players are playing worse than they should, and 50% are playing better than they should (to varying degrees). IRT Story, he was heinous last May, with a .432 OPS and a ridiculous 35/4 K/W. He had two stretches of 62 PAs with a .292 OPS, followed close behind with a stretch of 55 PAs with a .357. So how do we know whether or not he is in one of his slumps, or if he is not ready?
  3. If those two cost us 3 games, then our adjusted record would be 7-5, or a projected 94.5 wins. I'm okay with that.
  4. Good outing by Sammy. Cora made a tough decision to keep him in when he was struggling with his command.
  5. Just sundry, but: I had some concerns about his head returning to the ALE. Early should start every game until he works his way off the team. He's finished with his development, imho.
  6. The problem isn't 'we should've traded someone'. Every team in baseball could make that claim. I think the board was divided on Yoshida's contributions. Maybe 40% of us liked the guy, but understood the balance issue. And everyone else wanted him gone at all costs. But there was no reasonable way to predict Yoshida's good start and Duran's weak-ish start. Had we traded Duran, and gotten a .550 OPS from Yoshida, we'd have had a problem. And 6 weeks from now, we might be very happy we kept Duran, for a wide variety of reasons.
  7. I had him as a good #3. He's not only exceeded my expectations (SSS ), he looks like he sets a good example. I don't see anything special, but I never see anything down the middle, and never see the same pitch twice.
  8. Little things I like. Monasterio had a check-swing on the steal. The ball was a foot outside, but the batter should always have the bat in motion so that the catcher cannot step into his throw.
  9. I love having gray on the mound. I had to respond to an E-mail, and by the time I finished, he had already retired the side.
  10. Now we have to hope that Gray hasn't cooled off in that long half-inning.
  11. 7 ABs, so I not overly concerned. And we didn't hire him for his bat. But that was a nice bunt. I always like when the bunter can put some pressure on the defense, even in an obvious bunting situation.
  12. Some of that might be selection bias. Story was an amazing 31/32 last year, but you can't steal 1st, and he is one of the few players with a lower OBP than average. Mayer can be excused because, out of his 5 hits, he has 3 doubles and HR. And our best OBP and 2nd best base stealer (Masa), is not an every day player.
  13. Fair enough. I hadn't about the lefty angle either. I wouldn't give Story that pitch even if the count was 2-2, let alone 0-2.
  14. The pitch was a ball (real close), not a meatball. Past that, you're right. He should've buried a pitch low-and-outside, Just a bad call.
  15. I'd bet that we'll have dinosaurs at some point. Technology is advancing too quickly.
  16. After Bucknor had that really bad game, he was umping at 1st. He called out the runner because he said the guy missed 1st. The guy's foot landed right in the middle of the bag, in a regular stride. If any of us saw that play 1000 times, we would get it right all 1000 times. The runner was safe on appeal, but that was a play you should never, ever get wrong.
  17. I don't see any issue. Duran had 9 DRS last year, and two this year.
  18. I doubt it. I've read a lot of posts saying that we gave away Devers for nothing. So I think the Harrison and Tibbs we received, must be a different Harrison and Tibbs.
  19. I'm not expecting much, but a good comeback might be worth another 1-2 games in the standings.
  20. I think that's one of the keys. When gamblers bet the under/over, they take the HP umpire into consideration. The higher the K/W, the lower the ERA. It's not huge, but I'm guessing that the ERA difference at the two extremes is a solid 0.25. IMHO, one of the best changes since the NFL stopped measuring for first downs.
  21. An understandable rookie mistake. It feels like he was trying to NOT be overly anxious. I think a veteran would've jumped all over that first pitch. And bad mistake by the pitcher keeping the pitch in the zone.
  22. It was maybe his 3rd AB. The count was 1-0. The pitcher threw a nice-enough pitch, belt-high on the outside. Maybe a strike, but maybe not. But Story swung like it was an 0-2 count. Like he was trying to protect the plate. When you're ahead of the count, you should only swing at pitches you can drive. By swinging, he was either going to go to 1-1, or make an out. There was no upside to swinging. The best possible outcome was likely a swing-and-miss. This is grammar school level philosophy.

  24. I think the idea was that Mayer would be sitting against tough lefties, Romy (and then Monasterio) hitting aginst the lefties. Since neither Romy nor Monasterio can play SS, then neither could Mayer.
  25. Since none of those guys were traded, it is difficult to blame the RS for not trading for them.
