  1. I say it is philosophy, not talent that is the problem.
  2. Its a clear message that he's not interested in winning the game, so why should the team try?
  3. When will there be a sense of urgency to win close low scoring games? I think Cora uses the bullpen to purposely lose games so his pitchers wont have to pitch extra innings. Its all a part of the master plan. Bah ha ha ha ha. Cue lightning and thunder.
  4. I guess I'm saying we would also pay his contract because right now we are just paying him and getting nothing in return. I wasn't being completely serious but as things are going, it may be the only alternative.
  5. Ok but even with those figures, the lowest innings eating pitcher of a blow out is better than a non-existent batter.
  6. It was a complete cluster *beep* from the very beginning. Once they knew they were going to get Bregman, they should've immediately called Devers and offered him 1st. Yes we had Casas at the time but the FO, knowing Devers wants to play on the field, should've done it as a gesture of goodwill, and loyalty. Casas would've gotten over playing DH and if not, oh well. They literally chose rookie Casas over veteran Devers. Its just bad. I also remember some talk of Bregman playing 2nd or SS when they first signed him. Devers might have never have wanted it but I don't think he was asked or we would have heard about it. And to top it off, it unnecessarily leaves Yoshida in limbo.
  7. Well if this is just a hiccup and we keep up the momentum we've been building, then ok but this is a repeating pattern. It seems like the bullpen does fine unless they replace a starting pitcher that doesnt need it. No you don't want Crochet's arm to be overused, but he's built like a more muscular Randy Johnson and could probably handle it more than most. Maybe he should pitch to contact more. Pitchers today are pitching less but getting injured more. Huh? Yes because they're throwing harder, so they should stop doing that. Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer threw much slower than the average pitchers back then and they were very effective.
  8. Cora is purposely losing us games. He did this the last time we got some momentum going by subbing Houck when he was having his best start against Toronto. Houck had an 86 pitch count. What is it with Cora not wanting pitchers to be too succesful. It doesnt take a genius to understand that when a pitcher has your number, the offense would feel revitalized when they take him out of there, especially knowing there is a pattern of success of it happening so many times. Sounds like Ramon Vasquez would fill in nicely.
  9. Yes, both points, point to them not believing in contact, but theres so many more ways to score with someone on 3rd with less than 2 outs than swinging for the fences, and that needs to be practiced. I also like contact pitchers. We have a good defense, its just that we are feeling the pressure which is causing errors. If we could've driven home some of these base runners we could have won some of these games and there wouldn't be as much pressure. We are last or close to last in scoring with runners in scoring position and productive outs.
  10. Yes and it's not like your 1st baseman getting hurt is some unbelievable bad luck no one could ever predict. It really sounds like not everyone is on the same page.
  11. To get Yoshida in the line-up I imagine. That they didn't offer 1st base to Devers in the first place and put Casas as DH, is a case of misplaced loyalty in my view.
  12. I've got to give props to Duran too. Everytime the Sox get a little something going, its usually instigated by Duran but its not being sustained. So far, to me the fulcrum of the season up to this point is still the series against Toronto. Thats when we truly lost games when we didn't have to and it kicked any momentum we had straight in the balls. Excuse my language.
  13. First career walk off for Devers!! I'm really liking the one/two punch Duran and Raffy have....somewhat developed. Always room for improvement.
  14. I didnt know that. Well he's got a short time to make it work. I was all for analytics way back when but no system is perfect and analytics now has gone too far. It puts the player last and makes them merely into a gear for the machine. He then tries to make it up to them by being the "nice guy."
  15. I wonder how much is Cora and how much is the analytics department. It sounds to me like they have more weight than is talked about, especially when one of them can tell Jim Rice not to talk to a prospect. If Cora is on the hot seat, they should get rid of the analytics and tell Cora to manage his way out this himself.
  16. If we don't make the playoffs, it'll be obvious the culprit since all we've done is upgrade, and all the upgrades have been successful, beyond our hopes. It would sadden me to start making a bunch of changes to the roster when I don't think thats the problem. including asking prospects to save us. Kristian did well but he came into a neutral situation at the time, which would be different from a situation of having to save a franchise from embarrassment. Thats like asking Mac Jones to be the next Tom Brady. Yes, it's still too early but I don't think a whole season should be guaranteed. I'm thinking 2/3rds of a season if the trajectory isnt making the playoffs. And without major changes done to the roster either. Edit - To put some of the blame on Breslow and JH, the bullpen should've been a bigger priority in the off-season.
  17. We have practically the same record we had last year at this time even with all these new acquisitions. For one, I think we didn't put enough effort into getting a better bullpen, but more than that it's Cora and his "players coach" mentality. You cannot tell me players wouldn't rather be winning, so with that in mind, it must come from the manager.
  18. Here it is. https://prospects365.com/2020/07/08/pitch-quality-3-times-through-the-order/
  19. Agreed and I was just reading an article from an analytics guy who said in actuality in terms of quality, pitchers pitches get better the more times they go through a lineup. Its just that batters get better at honing in. The first time through the lineup is when quality is at its lowest. So basically starting pitchers are getting replaced who are finally finding their groove with someone with no groove at all.
  20. Everything seems to point, not to lack of skill, but psychological, as well as lack of small ball skills. I've heard we are worst in productive outs, men left on base and losing one run games. Other than that our stats are pretty good. To me that starts at the top, not the players. Another stat that points to it being psychological is we are first in errors. With all the defensive improvements, that should not be the case.
  21. Cora strikes again. Don't want our pitcher to struggle through and overcome. Must protect fragile psyches.
  22. I don't think there was alot of thought put into all of this. What, they didn't talk to Devers about getting Bregman before they got him? Seeing that Bregman was Coras aim probably from the get go, being their Houston connection, as well as Bregmans success in Fenway, why did they wait until the beginning of the season before telling Devers about DH? Im not sticking up for Devers 100% but he may have alot of pride and not be as team motivated as we want, neither was Manny. And the whole Yoshida thing is still unsolved. They could've traded Casas to Seattle for Luis Castillo but the RS had to have Yoshida in the deal so it got canceled. I understand, on paper, it's not an even trade, for us, but it solves alot of problems and they might've got Devers to play first much easier and Yoshida could be DH.
  23. I would like to see him in the line-up but there's no room if Devers doesnt play first. He's great trade bait for pitching where we will have to eat some of his contract.
  24. The only thing we lack is an upper tier bullpen. Winning just one of those losses to Toronto, especially the one Houck pitched, we would be happier campers. I think those losses kicked this club, with many new faces, still finding it's way, straight in the nether regions. I argue starters should pitch longer when doing well and even when not being perfect, but we still need a more reliable bullpen. Edit-Guess it's not MANY new faces on offense but there's much more pressure to do well with all the changes.
