  1. First career walk off for Devers!! I'm really liking the one/two punch Duran and Raffy have....somewhat developed. Always room for improvement.
  2. I didnt know that. Well he's got a short time to make it work. I was all for analytics way back when but no system is perfect and analytics now has gone too far. It puts the player last and makes them merely into a gear for the machine. He then tries to make it up to them by being the "nice guy."
  3. I wonder how much is Cora and how much is the analytics department. It sounds to me like they have more weight than is talked about, especially when one of them can tell Jim Rice not to talk to a prospect. If Cora is on the hot seat, they should get rid of the analytics and tell Cora to manage his way out this himself.
  4. If we don't make the playoffs, it'll be obvious the culprit since all we've done is upgrade, and all the upgrades have been successful, beyond our hopes. It would sadden me to start making a bunch of changes to the roster when I don't think thats the problem. including asking prospects to save us. Kristian did well but he came into a neutral situation at the time, which would be different from a situation of having to save a franchise from embarrassment. Thats like asking Mac Jones to be the next Tom Brady. Yes, it's still too early but I don't think a whole season should be guaranteed. I'm thinking 2/3rds of a season if the trajectory isnt making the playoffs. And without major changes done to the roster either. Edit - To put some of the blame on Breslow and JH, the bullpen should've been a bigger priority in the off-season.
  5. We have practically the same record we had last year at this time even with all these new acquisitions. For one, I think we didn't put enough effort into getting a better bullpen, but more than that it's Cora and his "players coach" mentality. You cannot tell me players wouldn't rather be winning, so with that in mind, it must come from the manager.
  6. Here it is. https://prospects365.com/2020/07/08/pitch-quality-3-times-through-the-order/
  7. Agreed and I was just reading an article from an analytics guy who said in actuality in terms of quality, pitchers pitches get better the more times they go through a lineup. Its just that batters get better at honing in. The first time through the lineup is when quality is at its lowest. So basically starting pitchers are getting replaced who are finally finding their groove with someone with no groove at all.
  8. Everything seems to point, not to lack of skill, but psychological, as well as lack of small ball skills. I've heard we are worst in productive outs, men left on base and losing one run games. Other than that our stats are pretty good. To me that starts at the top, not the players. Another stat that points to it being psychological is we are first in errors. With all the defensive improvements, that should not be the case.
  9. Cora strikes again. Don't want our pitcher to struggle through and overcome. Must protect fragile psyches.
  10. I don't think there was alot of thought put into all of this. What, they didn't talk to Devers about getting Bregman before they got him? Seeing that Bregman was Coras aim probably from the get go, being their Houston connection, as well as Bregmans success in Fenway, why did they wait until the beginning of the season before telling Devers about DH? Im not sticking up for Devers 100% but he may have alot of pride and not be as team motivated as we want, neither was Manny. And the whole Yoshida thing is still unsolved. They could've traded Casas to Seattle for Luis Castillo but the RS had to have Yoshida in the deal so it got canceled. I understand, on paper, it's not an even trade, for us, but it solves alot of problems and they might've got Devers to play first much easier and Yoshida could be DH.
  11. I would like to see him in the line-up but there's no room if Devers doesnt play first. He's great trade bait for pitching where we will have to eat some of his contract.
  12. The only thing we lack is an upper tier bullpen. Winning just one of those losses to Toronto, especially the one Houck pitched, we would be happier campers. I think those losses kicked this club, with many new faces, still finding it's way, straight in the nether regions. I argue starters should pitch longer when doing well and even when not being perfect, but we still need a more reliable bullpen. Edit-Guess it's not MANY new faces on offense but there's much more pressure to do well with all the changes.
  13. That's not new. American kids in general used to play pick up games just for the fun of it, no parents or leagues. I think it's got to be more like that to get back to the way it was.
  14. Assuming it's stubbornness on his part and not dishonesty by the front office.
  15. I would have to know all the motivations behind all the people involved in this. Was Devers actually promised 3rd base or is he exaggerating? Is Devers a selfish player with an f-you attitude or is it about the people behind the scenes who act like your friend in one minute and dump you without hesitation in another. Of course the fan is the least considered, but whatever.
  16. Does he not speak English? It's not very team oriented to needing an interpreter to speak with your teammates having been this long in the league. Looks like he understands it pretty quick but can't speak it.
  17. I don't want to be too negative, I'm sure there are plenty of successful teams that go through these kind of slumps but if I were to look at the team right now, I would see a team that expected to be successful and are a bit skittish about facing the fact that they aren't. I was hearing that they are the worst team in mlb when it comes to losing close games. Yet their overall offensive stats aren't bad. To me this screams leadership, but as I said, that's my picture of the team today and it could all just be a necessary phase that has to happen to figure out the bugs of a new team.
  18. It seemed pretty simple. If you have a good offense, pair it with a good bullpen to protect a lead.
  19. I'm saying Cora doesn't allow his starting pitchers, who often are doing well, to stay in the game, so the bullpen is coming into a game to replace someone that is already doing well. So I'm saying it's not a good mindset to have for a bullpen pitcher.
  20. To blame the offense for the bullpen giving away leads IMMEDIATELY after a good performance by the starting pitcher is something I disagree with. It's not on the bullpen either, it's completely on Cora. Maybe a bullpen reliever would feel more useful if he was needed more, like because the starting pitcher starts faltering.
  21. I think the loss came when Wong grounded into a double play with two men on.
  22. I guess the whole league is this way now. Not to sound like a broken record but I don't like it. It's taking the thinking and responsibility and spirit away from the player, making them wimpier and dumber and more susceptible to injury. It's like baseball socialism. Also, if everybody does it, who is there to compare to to prove its better?
  23. I'm saying why not wait until he gets in a little trouble. Hes earned the right to continue, within reason. I've heard that the theory is that they get easier to hit after 3 but you are talking about the difference between someone who is doing very well and dialed in and someone who is pretty cold and you don't know what you're going to get. If pitchers cared about wins and losses, they'd be pretty pissed at Cora by now.
