A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II

Not amongst the players but the players trust in the manager and GM. All symptoms point to them being talented enough except in pressure situations, like errors and driving in runners in scoring position. -

I don't think you were wrong. To me it sounds like the drama from the beginning of the year aka Bregman/Devers was an unneeded factor for a team that had alot of expectations and pressures to win as it was, what with all the new faces and youth. -

I think so but not just from talent viewpoint but from a better locker room viewpoint. -
If all our ex-pitchers are doing well, it's probably not our current players that are the problem, its the system. But I agree with you, I'm all about the pitching. Get more and better starting pitching as well as bullpen, and definitely different manager, GM, philosophy etc.. And yes, not as much of a players manager like Cora. I don't want a crazy hard-ass like Valentine though but more of a Bochy, Torre style. The chill, grounded type to do right by the newbies.

Its either Coras or Breslows. If they had thought it out they could have offered Devers 1st base right away instead of saying Bregman was going to play 2nd and then changing it up. That could've brought Yoshida to DH. Losing Casas should have been a blessing in disguise, respectfully, because he wasnt contributing much, but because of their blundering, they couldnt take advantage. And I think Cora definitely is partly responsible for the rotation, pulling them when they were having good outings, not letting them figure it out when having some trouble. And of course the bullpen is getting overworked because of it. There's other bits that could be brought up too like they were saying that Walker Buelher was saying he really wasn't injured but got sat anyway and moves by Cora like Wong pinch running for Narvaez for a not good enough reason and it actually came back to bite us.

I can think of two. One against Toronto with Houck pitching and he was having a great outing but with only an 85 pitch count. It was, though in the 6th inning when they pulled him. Cora actually did the same to Giolito the day before but was Gios first day back from injury, so I'm not counting that one. The other one was pulling Crochet with an 86 pitch count against the Mets. All three of them were lost quickly by the BP. It also seemed to be the catalyst for losing streaks after we had been building up wins and momentum.

They talk about Bello trying to be perfect with his pitches but don't the Red Sox value strike out outs, over contact outs? That will produce more pitches per inning, which puts arm stress on the whole staff by the end of the year.
-
Yes it all sounds very communist. Do it for the system, not for yourself.
-
They also usually talk more about the wins and not much the losses. "Joe Shmoe is a 20 game winner with a 3.75 ERA." I would like to see a stat that incorporates it all, W/L and no decisions. Maybe 0 points for losses, 1 point for no decision and 2 points for wins to get one number. How can you evaluate the difference between someone that is 20/10 in W/L and 10/5?
-
Its babying and brutal at the same time. Both serve to take power and responsibility away from the player and give it to the geeks, and to the manager who sides with the geeks. They don't want the players to be crafty and smart, they only want them to throw 100 mph and "we'll do the thinking 'round here."

I think W/L used to actually mean more because starting pitching used to mean more. Relief pitching is now much more about what could happen instead of what is happening and they take the SP out before he has a chance to prove whether he can get out of a jam and get a win. I also think W/Ls are a source of pride for the SP and could be a carrot to make them perform better. As a way to evaluate a pitcher, I think it's valuable when in combination with ERA, not necessarily by itself though. Having said that it may be a good way to evaluate how a pitcher does when he doesnt have his best stuff or when the game is on the line.

I know. IPs and PCs have gone down yet injuries are up. I was commenting on how Coras and modern baseballs philosophy of resting pitchers, and an overuse of the BP can be detrimental in the same way not regularly running your car and not running it on the highway can be bad for it. Running it on the highway is like a starting pitcher. It takes awhile to get warmed up and then it really gets going. All the relief pitching is like stop and start driving, not getting warmed up, going full speed from being cold over and over.

People assume it's increase in velocity and spin that is the cause of injuries, which I think it is but it could also be too much stopping and starting. Just like a car is better when you run it and not let it sit and you drive it on the highway instead of in the city.

You were also talking about "important stats," which seemed to be about a pitchers W/L. -

Wins and losses are so out of favor. Poor Garrett Crochet has around 2.00 ERA but a 4-4 W/L record. He couldve had that record with a 4.00 ERA or more. And it's not necessarily from poor offense, it's this new analytics way of must replace starting pitcher at a certain time regardless of circumstances. Humans like incentive and a feeling of purpose. It makes them play better. Of course geeks don't have a stat for that. To them players are merely a gear for the machine that when wore out, just replace. -

I actually don't doubt he had an "epiphany," of sorts. He watched Moneyball and thought "ahah, talent doesnt matter!!" -

What epiphany is that? -
Got to admit, for Cora to be not only let in mlb but actually a manager is strange considering how they treated Pete Rose.

I didn't know that about Cora wanting Devers to be 3rd. In terms of having a smooth clubhouse, that may have been better. Still have some problems with his coaching style though. -
I think for this team, it's a big reason. I'm not anti-analytics but it sounds like they think that just because it worked for them in the past, anything before it, like fundamentals, small ball, gut feelings etc. was a hundred years of mistaken thinking.

When I think of the type of manager I want for the Red Sox, Bruce Boche is the first to come to mind.

You are right because they said so much. Ideally they shouldn't have said that at all and should've talked to Devers about going to 1st as they were about to sign Bregman, or before. Did they not because 1st was supposed to be saved for Casas? Thats no good. They should've used the energy JH used flying to KC to talk to Devers, at the beginning of the year, when they signed someone to take his place.

Article: Red Sox Week in Review: Return of the Mid Sox
jdc69 replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
I think most of our roster have been good, especially starting the season. Casas was really the only one that never had a good period. Narvaez, Crochet, Buelher, Chapman, have all been good. Bregman has been solid throughout, except for now obviously. Devers got it going after actually being historically bad. Duran is getting better. Story and Campbell started good but have trailed off. Abreu was the best hitter in baseball for a time. The K's and not hitting with runners in scoring position, must be the from the approach told to them from manager and front office. That makes sense to me considering their numbers in other areas.- 77 replies

Actually I think it's philosophy and poor roster management. The whole Bregman/Devers thing was handled very poorly, and I don't think Devers is the main culprit. That itself is the cause of not having a replacement for Casas, and Yoshida being stranded in no mans land. I can't prove it but I also think all the K's are because of a batting philosophy that is anti-contact, pro-long ball. The worse to me though is the pitch count philosophy on starting pitchers. Taking pitchers out that are doing fine, with pitch counts under 100, makes me think that the offense has to not only overcome difficult pitching but moves by their own manager that lack common sense.
-
Just because Cora deems the pitchers unable to pitch 6-7 innings doesnt mean it's true. He pulls them many times with having just a little trouble but still getting out of the inning and under 90 pitches. Its at those times that the bullpen usually stinks it up and the offense follows suit. Houck was having a great game against Toronto but Cora pulled him after 85 pitches and the bullpen gave it up. They were probably wondering why they were there in the first place. Houck stank after that. He just did it to Crochet, game before today. Cora is over managing, not using common sense. He's saving his pitchers arms for the postseason but is under 500.
