we should have gotten Sonny Gray 3 years ago. He is about to turn 34. I looked at the other FA SP and besides Nola the only other decent one I see is Snell but again he will cost more than I would be willing to spend at this point of his career. I'd be ok with Gray on a 2-3 yr deal at about 10-12 million per but he will probably get more.
Bello is on his way developing to be one. Yamamoto should be the other and if Bloom had been doing his job we would would have another young SP on the cusp.
To be totally honest that is too much work. Why does it take it 4-6 years for a player to develop?? I'll tell you why- it's because Bloom wants to draft HS players rather than college players. Somehow teams like Cleveland and Seattle manage to draft and develop young quality pitching and they have been picking not much lower than the sox recently. And then I should mention that Bloom came from Tampa which has probably been the best example of developing young top P talent yet he has brought very little if any of that from there.
Now you are wanting him to sign some top fA pitching this offseason and the name that seems to be getting tossed around is Aaron Nola who will likely take 5-6 yrs at 25-30 million per and is already 30. We have already found out with guys like Price and Sale that this often does not work out. This type of pitching costs big $$ and is a big risk in my view. To sign quality 2B and OF types is MUCH MUCH cheaper. The Sox need more Bello types and I would certainly go after Yamamoto who is only 25. If I am Henry I do not allow Bloom to be outbid on him.
this is very good and well thought out post that I agree with most of. However there is no way i sign Nola. It will take at least a 5 year deal at 25-30 million per. NO WAY.
i actually think that once the Sox are truly out of it they will go a run of victories to lower their draft position and Bloom will select another HS with our first rd pick
you raise a very good point. I am pretty sure Henry will choose option 1 as Bloom has filled his mandate of lowering the payroll while remaining competitive.
I am hoping we can get Yamamoto but agree there will be lots of teams after him. Will Henry actually open his wallet?? As for Nola I would not be going 5 years at big number which he is likely to get. The guy is 30 yrs old and a TJ candidate.
A number of points here. 1] i love Justin Verlander but the time to get him passed 3-4 years ago. 2} Mayer is UNTOUCHABLE. 3} Yorke is NOT a valuable trade chip. You can sign FA 2B's every offseason. Not saying he might not turn into a decent MLB player just saying that 2B are reasonably easy to acquire. 4} I don't see any impending FA SP that I would be in on. Blake Snell and Aaron Nola are probably the 2 best available but will want big $$ and likely long contracts and I stay WAY AWAY from that. 5} I just dont see teams trading away top young cost controlled SP tht the Sox need. A real pickle for your favourite GM.
Owens was a total flop. Espinoza could have been a stud if not for TJ. Pedro was real high on him.. bottom line is no one’s is giving up a top pitching prospect without a HUGE return.
Neither of those. The first name in each group should be pretty much untouchable unless we are getting a young Pedro is return. Draft and develop our own like we are doing with Bello. 4 yrs of Chaim and we don’t have a single guy like that in the system
