This has been debated over and over again. We are running in circles. much like reporters asking Raffy the same question over and over and over again.

I think my statements and what he said are easily consolidated. If no one told him he's moving off of third, then in his head he's still playing third. Why would he tell a stranger he's moving off of the position he's been told he's playing when his boss hasn't told him he's not playing third yet. In that situation you have to either feel blindsided by your boss or confused why a stranger is saying you were just demoted. So yes, he was confused and shocked built largely on the media hammering a question he didn't fully understand because of when and where it was coming from. To me it's clear there's a conversation between him and the team that needs to happen that has NOT happened.

Ya'll are missing the point. Ya'll are 100% right but for all the wrong reasons. It's not about Devers doing what's best for the team, by all accounts he probably will. Just because he should move off of 3B doesn't mean he's not allowed to be disappointed he has to do so. He loves playing, and you should try to imagine the heartbreak he must have to have to switch. Now imagine being told this in private, getting angry, getting over it, then going out and playing ball and being a great DH. But instead he finds out in public and doesn't have that chance to grieve privately. It was an unnecessary shock. I don't think Raffy is good enough to play 3B, but I'm happy he cares enough to be pissed he's moving off of it. I feel bad he has to live in a world where people can't see past the forest for the trees and see what really happened yesterday. This might be the biggest mountain ever made of a mole hill. Call me back if he refuses to take batting practice next week and he's still talking about staying at 3B.

Yes we all saw how Mookie Betts reacted when he found out by the media in a press conference.....oh wait, that's not how it happened.

Common sense, look how he reacted and what he said. His reaction was clear cut and dry that of someone who was shocked and confused. I think his reaction was based more on that rather than him being a baby or unreasonable. If you stubbornly want something less anecdotal because you're sold on holding Raffy to the fire consider this: Up until just a week ago the Sox were quoted saying Bregman would play 2nd base. It's blatantly obvious they hadn't told him yet he wouldn't be playing 3B.

It just amazes me whole the front office and ownership is apparently absolved from any wrong doing in this when at the surface it looks like they may have misled Devers.

Nah, it's not about his acceptance of it. Everyone agrees he should be moved off of 3rd. It's the fact that he was blindsided by it. Imagine being blindsided with important news with a camera right on you taking your reaction in real. time. If Devers was being told he would stay at 3rd and then kept on getting told by reporters that's he not playing third when the team didn't tell him he has EVERY right to be upset. That doesn't mean he shouldn't or wont' do his job and switch. That interview by the way, as I said before was being misconstrued, you didn't hear Devers speak you heard an interpretation. It's real time game of telephone and tone gets lost in translation as well. Devers was more annoyed with the line of questioning, they effectively kept asking him the same questions over and over again and he was genuinely confused and got a little annoyed with them. I think that's a very human response. This whole thing is being blown WAY out of proportion.

Isn't amazing how people can hate and distrust the front office for 1/2 a decade and then instantaneously take their side on this. None of us know anything for 100% certain right now, but it REALLY feels like Raffy has not been talked to about this and he was blindsided in that press conference. This suggests the Sox have not, or not done a very good job to talking to him about this.

how do you know they DID? Devers acted like someone taken by surprise, so at this moment I believe they have not had a conversation with him. Cora did say that Bregman was going to play 2nd, and now they're saying 3rd. It almost feels like someone was lied to to get everyone on board with Bregman and now they're changing their tunes. Devers should move, but if he is blindsided by this he has EVERY right to be upset about it. And FTR, someone who speaks spanish and heard Raffy's tone will tell you it sounded like he was more upset with the media and their line of questioning than he is with the team. So maybe people should chill with the Devers hate for at least a little while until we know more.

Well if I had an employee that was very good at something, and awful at something else but thought they were good at that one thing I'm going to have a conversation with them. A long, honest conversation highlighting their strengths and how much they mean to this company while simultaneously telling them that I need them to stop doing that one other thing. The way Devers acted in the press conference suggests he was very surprised, which suggests no such conversations have been had with Raffy. As I've said before, I'm going to wait until more about this situation is known. But for the most part, while I agree Raffy should move for the good of the team, it appears he may have very good reason to be upset at the way the Sox have gone about it.

Sometimes you put your best employees on the toughest tasks, so more error is and should be expected. Obviously apples and oranges here because Raffy is not good at defense.

I also heard from people who speak Spanish that the translation was not very good at all. We are all assuming a lot based on a s*** translation. Maybe he thought he was being asked if he'd would like to play 1B which is far different from will you play there. Maybe he thought he was being asked if he's been WORKING on 1B, which he hasn't. A lot gets lost in translation. Media jumped on it and people are blowing this up to be bigger than it needs to be right now.

I think there's a decent chance he doesn't opt out, but if he wants more money it should be easy. All he has to do is get more than 125 to get more than what he'd have this year at 165. If a few teams were willing to give him 165/6 this year. Why wouldn't someone give him 140/6 or 130/5 next year? I do think there's a good chance he stays for two years though.

I think they could allow Devers to either remain at 3B for 1/3 of the games or start exposing him to 1B and let Casas DH a little. There's a chance that Bregman opts out and we need a 3B next year.

I don't believe anything that has happened can't be rectified. My experience as a boss is probably complete irrelevant as I pay people between 50-75k but hey maybe it's all the same. If I was the Sox brass I would sit down with Raffy and apologize to him. Let him know that he IS moving to DH (perhaps still get 40-50 games in the field) but they should of had a conversation with him earlier. Let him know that he is an important part of their organization and their team, and that they're paying him $30 million a year. Devers may not have liked moving off of third either way, but he would have done it and this only makes it worse. A sincere apology goes a long way.

If someone was hired to replace an aspect of your job that you like and you had to hear about it on live TV taken by surprise how do you think you would react? Devers SHOULD move off of third if they ask, and he ultimately will. But if they've had no conversations with him about it then he has every right to be upset about that.

Man how quick people are to jump down Raffy's throat, guys been nothing but good since he's been here (except his defense). I think it's obvious at this point that the media has blown this story out of proportion. Raffy is going to play where the Sox tell him too, even if he's upset he will get over it. Plenty of other good baseball players have been upset when they've been moved, moved, were fine, and everything was fine with the team. He's an adult. It really feels like Raffy was blindsided by this. As if the team had never told him he was moving off of third. Raffy should move off third, and he will. But if anyone thinks for one second he doesn't have a right to be upset that they do so without having a conversation with him and he has to find out about it during a press conference then you're just being unreasonable.

I think it depends on your roster. If they slide Duran to CF and plug Refsynder in left at the expense of Rafaelas bat that's fine. But at some point this year the outfield could easily be Campbell/Duran/Anthony. Then who are you taking time away from? in that scenario I don't want to bench any of those 3 guys. The odds of that happening crash this year if Bregman plays 3B. This is likely Refs last year regardless. -

Who is squeezing Ref and Romy out of at bats that makes this team worse? Bregman and Campbell are slated to get a lot of at bats where there were 0 last year. Those two guys are better than Ref and Romy. -
Bregman at 2nd does improve the defense. I think many of us just wanted him at 3rd because we thought Campbell would also be an upgrade at 2nd and Bregman would be a step up on D over Devers. not my plan A, but I still think the team is defensively better

Bello had minor soreness and was shut down but apparently is already back to throwing. concerning, but on the other hand they’re probably overly cautious with guys out the gate. What could be some fatigued, and a little sorness could turn into missing 1/2 a season vs. no time at all if you ramp back up to quickly. im sure someone will go down. Someone always does every year. It happens all over baseball

To bat a runner in (besides oneself) someone must be on base. Who gets on before you is 100% out of your hands. It’s blatantly obvious RBI is largely influenced by luck, or chance. that doesn’t mean there are not certain players who have a knack for performing in the clutch. I’d take OPS with RISP and two outs over RBIs any day. anyone wanna talk sample size with that now?

Looming at Bregman statcast page and I noticed how low he ranks on velocity for throwing. He has a very weak arm, so his defense value at 3B is all about his range. this makes me feel a little better about his move to 2nd even if he’d be better at 3rd than Devers. I think Devers will look better there with a healthy Story along side him. If Story goes down we should have better options this year than in years past.

So your starting outfield is Duran/Rafaela/Abreu and your bench is Duvall/Narvaez/Hamilton/Refsnyder. I suppose that's fine but someone is getting cut or traded when Anthony or Campbell come up. Which is fine.
