I mean, I'm not pro trading Devers....but if you're NOT going to resign him this deadline or last offseason would have been the year to do it. Even really great players aren't going to return as much if you're only getting 1 or a 1/2 a year of control. E.G. Mookie Betts trade.

Especially if Kike stays healthy and you get the 2021 Kike. That outfield would be pretty damn good.

Having a slight overpay for one year of Kike is fine too, it gives them the opportunity to have that money coming off the books next offseason as well. So if they punt the Devers extension it might give them a chance to get under the Luxury tax....if they so choose to do so.

I think that depends on what you define as "full on fire sale" If they traded Bogey/JDM/Eovaldi.....well those are all guys hitting the open market always this offseason. Doesn't change the holes they need to plug up.

They may, maybe not exactly how GG is envisioning it but I think they have a vision of what the roster could look like. But I don't think they plan as much based off of that because they know so much can happen, which is why I said in a previous comment, I don't think teams make roster decisions based on guys below AA.

I like this, I'm ok with Verdugo in RF but I think the team is much better if you upgrade in RF and put Verdugo in LF. This team desperately needed two outfielders always, Kike is 1/2 the puzzle for 2023....and that's assuming he can stay healthy. Not sure how great of a depth option Franchy/Duran is at this point. You hope Duran can take a step forward and maybe at least be a replacement next year, or maybe the bat develops to make up for subpar defense. But I never want to see him in CF/RF again. So if Kike goes down and and Verdugo slides to RF I still want a good CF/RF on this team. Which is why a guy like Nimo still makes sense if you ask me.

Obviously, not every team operates the same but as a general rule, you don't plan the big league roster on guys below AA. So much can happen between now and then and guys can always move off the position. The SS/3B tandem of Bogaerts/Devers could easily be 3B/1B in a few years. Mayer may lose a step and be better suited for 3B/2B too for all we know. Things don't always work out this way but generally speaking up the middle players are the most versatile on your roster. Mookie Betts was a 2B by trade but moved off position because he was blocked. Unless the guy is knocking on the door in AAA I don't think you worry about that, we could really use another bat to lengthen the lineup. Just think about how much better the offense has been with Kike/Story back. You take that away and shorten the lineup if you don't replace Bogey's bat. Verdugo has the arm for RF, and he's not bad there but I don't think he's great either. I'd still like the Sox to go after a CF/RF type. I don't want another LFer.....we have 10,000 LFer on this team haha.

Wrong! Top prospects get traded for premium players all the time. We traded away the #1 prospect in all of baseball for Chris Sale. And if that’s your philosophy and you can’t develop pitching then guess what? You don’t have any pitching and you lose. When is the last time the Sox developed a TOTRS? It’s been over a decade. That’s a great strategy, but until you get there and you currently don’t have an ace in the pipeline your only options are FA or the trade market. I’m the biggest prospect homer in here, I’d love to retain Mayer and think we likely do, but you won’t see me crying about it if he goes for a young cost controller ACE.

I think of Betts was offered that money pre-Covid he would have rejected it. I think Betts was dead set in going to FA, but if he stayed here throughout the pandemic he may have came to the table with the Sox. Unfortunately we will never know for certain.

No he’s not. He had the right ideal though, I think if you want to add quality, cost controller front line pitching the trade market is the way to go. Otherwise you’re spending $200 million plus on a guy who’s 30+ looking to break down. There seems to be injury risk with every pitcher nowadays, but Casas seems like the kind of Prospect you keep, now If Bobby Dalbec turned out better then Casas may be the guy you trade for pitching.

This is fair, but if you play your chips correctly, a strong farm typically precedes results.
