One of the my favorite books "The smartest guys in the room" Some of those Enron Fellas back in the early 2,000's ended up in handcuffs, although something tells me that was your reference...this book.

All eyes will be on Sox ownership this offseason. What do you think the Sox will do for the budget in the year 2025? will they significantly add? or will they shed. I set the over/under at $220 million

I'd call 81-81 mediocrity. I'd call last place with a losing record beneath mediocrity.

Teams don't abundantly play their division like they did in the past. The year was an improvement, little consolation prize for missing the playoffs so I'd be more comfortable on bargaining to say there was no improvement rather than it was a step back. The later just sounds unreasonably pessimistic.

I think Abreu gets you a decent reliever with control, maybe a back end starter with less control. Hamilton and Wink hold value too, but I don’t think you can package all three up for something better. All three are good candidate's to be traded, but not in the same deal.

I’m not sure Garcia gets protected, I’m fairly certain he probably does not, this reminds me of the Gilberto Jimenz, discussion. I was 100% certain he would not be protected with Garcia it’s more like 90% hitters are a different animal than pitchers. While both can work on things outside of live game action, position players really need their at bats vs. live pitching more than pitchers need to face hitters for their development. because of that, pitchers can be stashed in bullpens, thrown into blowouts and continue working on their craft everyday. a hitter can’t improve his craft sitting on the bench and taking batting practice in lieu of games the same way a pitcher can. A team can’t stash an offensive player on their roster. There’s a very good chance he goes unclaimed. but I do think there’s a chance with him, unlike Jimenez who never took an at bat above A ball before being rule 5 eligible. Garcia has 30 for whatever that’s worth.

Much how much of an upgrade is Tanner Scott when you’re losing Jensen? sox need pitching, starting and relievers. Sign me up for Burnes/Scott

It’s a generalization for sure, it rings more true when you remove the top of the market. Elite closers are getting paid, and they are performing. after that, results can vary wildly. With relievers they only need to pitch 1-2 innings and don’t need to turn a lineup over. They’re usually a one trick pony. You lose your pitch or control and it gets ugly fast. Conversely, there are less things to fix when you’re a relief pitcher. one good pitch makes you a serviceable reliever in the bigs.

100% obviously no MLB team is using BTV, but they have their own internal valuation systems that place value on players that effectively does the same thing. We will never see that, the team what we want to trade with might really undervalue our prospects.......or overvalue them. I think we sometimes think that just because we trade a guy away it's because we don't like them or, and this is my favorite, we think he won't develop into a player. That's why I've always gotten a kick out of the "trade the guys overvalued and you don't think will make it" The irony is, despite that logic being complete ********, there actually is an element of truth to it if another team values your guys or said players it's a lot easier to make a deal. For example. If Seattle really really likes a few of our guys, we could probably have Logan Gilbert at a reasonable cost (still costing you at least one in the top 3-4+) but if they don't then it's not happening, or you're over paying.

I think to varying degrees they were not unrealistic. My tone was more geared towards the ideal that any time anyone makes a trade proposal it's going to create controversy. If I could travel through time and identify every trade the Sox make the next two years and post it here. Half the board would call it absurd. I tend to find most people either greatly undervalue or overvalue are own players.

Again, he's a talented arm. Good teams take guys and fix them. I never suggested they trade for him to be a 2025 starter. I like to buy low and sell high, of course in this case you may be buying low and staying low.....but at least you bought low.

Exactly, and it's not like you're trading any high end talent for him, nor are you signing him to slide into your rotation for 2025. Good teams make deals like this and fix guys.

I make the first 2 and sign Burnes. Now you have two legit aces, 2 legit mid rotation guys (one of which looked like an ACE for much of this year) and two legit middle to back end guys who at times can be or may be better. Starting 5: Burnes/Alcantara/Houck/Bello/Giolito Swing man: Crawford/Whitlock Projects (guys who have tremendous potential but haven't put it together yet) Preister/Detmers. Minimal drainage of the farm system. Still under the luxury tax, team set for years.

I 100% never said the David Price contract was an example of the flexibility of ownership. I said it was an example of them having a philosophy and then changing it. Which they did. They did exactly that. They've done it 3 times over the past 3 decades. For better or worse, whether they never do so again is irrelevant, because they have and those are the facts and the facts are indisputable.

People keep on saying that over and over again, and I don't dispute it and I don't think anyone else can at this point. I just don't believe they HAVE to always be a mid market team, it wasn't too long ago they were not. For the sake of argument, I do feel it's prudent to stress other ways to improve the roster thru player development and trades but I refuse to be beaten down into acceptance. There's more than one way to skin a cat, and John Henry certainly knows he's perfectly capable of making money without being a cheapo. The more complacent fans become the more likely this is to ensue. And as I've said time and time and time again, the direction of the wind changes. It wasn't even a decade ago we all said the same thing and then BAM!!! David Price gets signed. The big boy socks will return one day, and we should demand it.

I kind of made this point earlier, perhaps it was on another thread but I agree, depending on price, no one is untouchable. And yes, it would be very surprising if the Sox signed Corbin Burnes, and it would be a paramount shift in FO strategy given recent off seasons, but they will sign someone big some day, perhaps it's in 10 years under a new owner, or perhaps not. I wouldn't bet on it, but I'd welcome it.

And the guys you trade for might not ever be as good as they were before you traded for them. And the guys you sign in free agency might not ever be as good as they were before either. I like taking risks, and right now my preferred path would be to keep guys like Campbell and Anthony and go out and sign guys like Corbin Burnes and maybe trade for an elite closer.

I don't know. The thing with Rafaela, in my opinion is he doesn't have a high ceiling, I don't think he will offensively be much more than he is now. He MIGHT BE!!! but probably not, and how much does a defensive wizard who you put in the back of your lineup get in FA? I don't think Rafaela would fetch that much, I actually find his extension a real head scratcher. HOW he adds value isn't exactly an arbitration killer, there's a very good chance the Sox saved very little money with that extension in what now looks like a very crowded outfield. I like Rafaela, I like him a lot, I hope he's the starting center fielder for years to come. But he strikes me as more of a take your 6 years and be done type of guy. (at least for now.)

If the Sox did absolutely nothing other get 1 elite starting pitcher and 1 elite relief pitcher. I'd be super super excited for next season.

This is exactly why I want to buy pitching. Build a winner now with the young core of position players. Use the next wave of prospects to trade from and to and lengthen that window.
