MLB Trade Rumors predicts a two-year, $16 million contract for Richards and a three-year, $39 million contract for Odorizzi.
  2. Then perhaps it's time for the Red Sox to turn to the dependable Rick Porcello. What durable free agent starter will fit into the Red Sox budget?
  3. Who can resist a fun comp? 32-year-old Garrett Richards is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound righthander taken out of college in the first round of the 2009 draft while 30-year-old Nathan Eovaldi is a 6-foot-2, 217-pound righthander taken out of high school in the 11th round of the 2008 draft. MLB Trade Rumors predicts a two-year, $16 million contract for Richards while Eovaldi is owed $34 million over the next two seasons.
  4. FWIW Garrett Richards tossed more innings than Nathan Eovaldi in 2020. Martin Perez was the only Red Sox pitcher who tossed more innings than Richards last year. An update: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2021/01/boston-red-sox-garrett-richards-have-momentum-toward-deal-talks-with-free-agent-starter-evolving-though-other-teams-remain-involved.html
  5. From Thursday's chat with FanGraphs columnist Dan Szymborski: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/dan-szymborski-fangraphs-chat-1-12-21/
  6. The Red Sox reportedly are in "active discussions" with veteran righthander Garrett Richards:
  7. Was Enrique Hernandez the Red Sox second choice after Jurickson Profar (who offers similar versatility)? The 2021 Marcel projections for Hernandez and Profar (who is 18 months younger than Hernandez): EH 446 PA, .239/.311/.423/.734 JP 525 PA, .242/.323/.425/.749 Steamer and ZiPS project Hernandez with 2021 WAR of 1.0 in 79 games and 0.6 in 141 games while projecting Profar with 2021 WAR of 1.5 in 136 games and 1.6 in 136 games.
  8. Working off the current roster, the projected Red Sox lineup at Roster Resource: CF Alex Verdugo SS Xander Bogaerts 3B Rafael Devers DH J.D. Martinez C Christian Vazquez LF Andrew Benintendi RF Hunter Renfroe 1B Bobby Dalbec 2B Michael Chavis SP Nathan Eovaldi SP Eduardo Rodriguez SP Tanner Houck SP Martin Perez SP Nick Pivetta CL Matt Barnes https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/red-sox Changes are likely before Opening Day but the Red Sox should be able to field a team. Or not.
  9. Triston Casas made the Baseball Prospectus Top 101 prospect list at No. 85: https://www.overthemonster.com/2021/1/21/22242139/boston-red-sox-top-prospects-triston-casas-top-101-mlb-jeter-downs-bobby-dalbec https://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/article/64061/2021-prospects-the-top-101/
  10. Do the Red Sox consider stepping back in 2021 after the AL East continues to get more competitive with the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly signing George Springer, Kirby Yates and Tyler Chatwood?
  11. Steamer and ZiPS project 2021 WAR of 1.7 and 1.5 for Andrew Benintendi and 1.4 and 1.8 for Eddie Rosario: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/andrew-benintendi/17901/stats?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/eddie-rosario/12155/stats?position=OF FWIW Benintendi is nearly three years younger than Rosario.
  12. One can cherry-pick stats or look for a composite assessment. Kyle Schwarber and Andrew Benintendi have different tools but somewhat similar overall value, according to projected WAR. Or not.
  13. Steamer and ZiPS project 2021 WAR of 1.7 and 1.5 for Andrew Benintendi and 1.9 and 2.0 for Kyle Schwarber: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/andrew-benintendi/17901/stats?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/kyle-schwarber/16478/stats?position=OF Schwarber, who is 16 months older than Benintendi, was the fourth pick in the 2014 draft while Benintendi was the seventh pick in the 2015 draft.
  14. Corner outfielder Jake Fraley and prospect righthander Isaiah Campbell from Seattle would fit the bill if the Red Sox added lefty reliever Josh Taylor: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades/trade-38289/ Tampa Bay selected Fraley in the second round of the 2016 draft when Chaim Bloom was with the Rays. Campbell was Seattle's second-round pick in 2019.
  15. The website declined the 6-for-1 trade for Luis Castillo because “You need to add at least one high-value to the other side of the trade for it to be accepted, and make sure there’s not too many.”
  16. Alex Cora reportedly says the Red Sox currently have more pitching depth than they did in 2019 and 2020: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/01/pitching-notes-castillo-reds-anibal-red-sox-cora.html
  17. The Boston Globe on Sunday posted columnist Alex Speier's take on the Red Sox offseason: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/01/17/sports/there-are-reasons-red-sox-patient-approach-there-are-many-holes-fill-plenty-options-still-out-there/
  18. This website suggests that Alex Verdugo, Triston Casas, Jeter Downs, Tanner Houck, Bryan Mata and Connor Seabold would be just enough for the Red Sox to land Luis Castillo: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/
  19. Some posters on this forum are in over their heads and overmatched. Or not.
  20. From today's MLB Trade Rumors chat with columnist Mark Polishuk: https://www.jotcast.com/chat/mlbtr-live-chat-9686.html This Seattle fan holds in high regard 25-year-old righthander Justin Dunn, the Boston College product who last season posted an ERA of 4.34 in 10 starts. Still, the Mariners should probably trade five years of Dunn for two years of Andrew Benintendi.
  21. As with any offseason, we are waiting for the tipping point ... which may come late this year, but it will come. Free agents and front offices are in staredowns, knowing that numerous options remain on each side. As signings slowly come in, the market shrinks for both sides. The tipping point comes when the market shrinks to a point that the free agents and front offices worry about being left out. Then comes the flurry of signings. Or not. Be patient.
  22. Today the Yankees improved relative to the Red Sox and others ... but it was just one day. The Red Sox may make the major improvements next week or next month. Or not.
  23. So could the Seattle Mariners. Garrett Richards had his best years with the Angels when Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto was general manager in Anaheim.
  24. An MLB.com website lists Alex Vedugo as the fourth-best centerfielder in baseball: ... even though last year Verdugo played only eight of his 422 outfield innings in center.
