  1. I’ll allow the erasure if Story, since it wouldn’t likely have happened had the Sox signed Betts. But Sale’s contract has to count…
  2. Not likely unless his OPS in September drops under .600…
  3. Any potential major leaguer taking a roster spot for minimum wage makes it that much easier to pay for Bogaerts and/or Devers. Fifth starter? 7th bullpen arm? If it’s a minimum wage player, that helps. And with minor leaguers, it’s not uncommon for a 20yo future swingman to become a 21yo potential second or third starter…
  4. His leverage was hurt because with Story, the Sox simply don’t need him as badly…
  5. If he doesn’t get what he wants from Boston now, he can /will go and see what his best offer is from anyone in November. What would be his incentive to sign anything with Boston right now? Unless it met his asking price, whatever that is…
  6. I don’t think it sealed his fate as much as I think it hurt his leverage. Before Story was on board, Bogaerts could basically demand the world, and if the Sox didn’t meet his terms, he had free agency to fall back on. Free agency might never reach his contact demands, but at least he knows he will get the best possible offer. It’s like when JD was set to become a free agent, and Boras wrote a treatise about the “King Kong of Slug” and how JD deserved $200mill. Arizona had first rights, and walked away at that price despite JD reaching legend status in a partial season there. JD went to the market and got nowhere near his $200 mill. Boston came the closest, and even then it took forever for JD to sign, presumably because Boras was trying to squeeze that missing $75mill out of anyone he could…
  7. The quote was originally from UCLA football coach Red Sanders. Sanders also is credited with saying of rival USC “Beating SC isn’t a matter of life and death. It’s more important than that.” It is possible the man was a tad overly competitive…
  8. If they wanted to see if last season’s final 9 IP from Barnes were just a fluke or if he recovered from whatever, I get that. But obviously Barnes ha gone well out of his way to prove those innings were no fluke…
  9. Certainly not my input…
  10. Follow your own response about re-signing Sale, something you said you would not have done in response to my saying your accounting might be more creative than the current front office…
  11. I’m fine with that. The interesting fallout from that is Story as a big moves also serves as negotiation leverage to prevent Bogaerts from becoming an even bigger move…
  12. Would the current front office have done it either?
  13. Has he even been allowed to make big moves? The Sox payroll still isn’t small…
  14. Was Yawkey trying to collect DiMaggio’s? “I’ve got Dom. Once I get Joe, getting Vince will be real easy! And then I’ll have them alll and will RULE THE WORLD!” Yeah I sometimes think of Yawkey as a Bond villain. But I doubt I’m the only one…
  15. If you use fWARVas a measure, Story has actually been pretty close to Bogaerts over the past few seasons. Eovaldi is just too risky to go long term with again. He’s good when healthy, but I have strong doubts he will stay healthy from ages 33-37 or 38. I think JD and Bogaerts will return. Devers is going to be a difficult case to bring back (when the time comes), so I’m not as confident. Will keeping Bogaerts once again look like the Consolation Prize for losing Devers just like he was for losing Betts?
  16. Why no confidence? Besides stealing Whitlock, he’s also added Nick Pivetta, whom he got for two mediocre relief pitchers on expiring contracts and got him from a large market team that had given up on him and was not just dumping salary…
  17. Not my favorite source either. But I don’t like just disregarding them if they do put in the effort…
  18. He had his detractors, but most of them focused on individual moves and ignored the big picture. The guy built a championship team and won multiple rings while simultaneously rebuilding the farm system. Yet somehow some fans seem to think “but he kept getting new shortstops” is a criticism that actually offsets those other accomplishments. To me, I wonder if these same people read the Bible, and when they get the the miracle of the loaves and fishes, their first reaction is “What?! No tartar sauce!?? Some savior!!”
  19. I can add him to the list. But Cabrera, Gonzalez, and Scutaro we’re all good. And he also signed Bogaerts and Jose Iglesias. The worst thing you can say is he clearly learned from his mistakes, and he turned Renteria into Coco Crisp and even Lugo was only around for 2+ years, one of which was a championship team and the second got the Sox to the ALCS…
  20. I believe Jim Hendry actually did that, in a rare Jim Hendry move that worked…
  21. An overblown criticism. He signed one SS (Renteria) who didn’t work out and floated through a few names while his prospects developed. But he also brought in two extremely talented shortstops that are both still playing MLB, which is pretty impressive for a guy whose been gone for 10 years…
  22. He’s already stolen Whitlock from the Yankees…
  23. If Bloom is only a puppet, why do you think he’s a bad fit for Boston? There isn’t a GM/President of Ops out there who doesn’t listen to his owner…
  24. Nothing would affect attendance and ratings more than winning. If those are both down and the team still has Bogaerts and Devers, doesn’t that tell you stars are less important than winning? No one is turning off the Sox solely because of Bogaerts’ stalled contract talks…
  25. Betts was drafted under Epstein. Epstein also signed Bogaerts as IFA. Cherington signed Devers as IFA…
